The host at the main stand wasn’t very welcoming and seemed to have an attitude, which wasn’t the best first impression. However, a staff member with pink hair and piercings was very kind and helpful she really helped balance the experience.
The bartenders were handling drinks and serving food, so things were moving, but slowly. My server was actually one of the bartenders. After I finished eating, I was ready to pay but couldn’t find him for about 10 minutes.
The same pink-haired staff member stepped in and helped me close out, which I appreciated.
Now for the food this is where they shine.
The curry goat was flavorful and tender. The baked beans were solid but packed with brown sugar.
The jerk lamb chops were phenomenal easily the highlight of the meal. Perfect seasoning and great flavor.
I ordered a Bob Marley drink. It seemed like it was made with frozen fruit rather than fresh fruit or authentic Caribbean punch, but once it melted and blended together, it tasted good.
Overall, the food itself deserves 5 stars. The flavors were on point. However, the restaurant is clearly understaffed, and professionalism and service flow could use improvements.
If they tighten up the customer service side, this place would be exceptional. I would return for the jerk lamb chops alone.
The meat pies were excellent. The dip was just the right amount of spicy and I’d love to know what spices were in the actual ground beef. Jerk chicken was excellent and truly seasoned to the bone. It was mild—in fact I could have stood a tad more jerk flavor! Dessert was the banana pudding. Outstanding!
I ate in the bar area. Seemed full of regulars which is always a good sign! Plenty of folks picking up takeout also. I’ve seen some comments on slow or rude service. I didn’t see that and I watched the service in the dining room and saw servers return to tables regularly.
I’ll be back to try the pork and maybe the ribeye! And some of the curry dishes.
With me being away from Jamaica for a while, I was indecisive about what to order, but the waitress, I think her name is Kenya, was so nice and incredibly patient. No matter how many times I changed my mind, she stayed calm and pleasant the entire time.
We actually had three different plate colors, but only the black and green ones are visible in these pictures because we were still waiting on the oxtail, which came out on the yellow plate. The uniqueness of coordinating the plates with our Jamaican flag colors was a beautiful touch that made the experience feel even more like home. We’ll definitely be going back there to dine again.
“workers” looked very lackadaisical, I guess due to it being slow. Order soft drinks, but there was no “lunch menu”. Straight menu, no lunch prices. Ordered 1 Jerk Dark with Jamaican rice and Peas and steamed cabbage….$17 Wowsers!! Jerk lamb chop meal with Jamiacan rice and peas, mac and cheese $29.50….geeez. With the drink (oh yeah only was charged for 1 $4.00 (price seems like 2) Total price came up to 50.50 for lunch!
*****BEWARE….they sneak the AUTO GRATUITY on the bill (18%) and DON’T EVEN TELL YOU.
I tipped the waiter $15 and with the auto gratuity it came up $24 tip.
SHAME ON YOU for not telling me the tip was already included.
The chicken and lab chops were good, the Jamaican peas and rice were not seasoned, the macaroni looked as if was made with cheese dip with no seasoning, and they didn’t have any bread to go with
the meal.
The server, One love R, was good…dont know about 49% tip good though.
Sad to say this is a ONE AND DONE! To the HAPPY MART!!!
I had an amazing experience at Cutlass Grille! The food, atmosphere, and service were all top-notch.
I ordered the Curry Goat with rice & peas and plantains, and it was absolutely delicious
tender, flavorful, and seasoned to perfection. My girl had the Jerk Lamb Chops with macaroni & cheese and collard greens, and her plate was just as impressive. The lamb was juicy with a nice smoky jerk flavor, the mac & cheese was creamy and cheesy, and the greens were well seasoned.
On top of the great food, they had live music, which really added to the vibe and made the evening feel even more special. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the menu had so many great options to choose from it was hard to decide!
If you’re looking for authentic Jamaican flavors with a great atmosphere in Hampton Roads, this is definitely the spot. I’ll be coming back soon to try more dishes!
The service, unfortunately, was pretty much nonexistent. We got our food and water, and that was it. Our server never checked in, and I had to flag someone down just to get more water and later to ask for the check.
The other server who helped us was super friendly, had a great smile, and was really helpful. I would’ve loved to leave her a tip. But an 18% gratuity had already been added to the bill.
Honestly, I left feeling like I spent more than the experience was worth. It kind of felt like something I could’ve gotten at a fast-food place. Also, the bathroom floors and tables were greasy, which was a little off.
If I go back, I will just get takeout…
Owner is very down to earth and the staff is very attentive. Everyone was very friendly.
Jaylin was my server and she was awesome. She was very professional and accurate with taking the order, food came out exactly as requested and she checked in regularly to make sure I was good to go.
Very safe atmosphere. Will definitely return.
