But once we got there, Friday, Dec 26th, for a late lunch, and found parking, it was smooth sailing.
Our server LeighAnna, (sp?) was charming, articulate on menu choices, and on time with refreshing drinks and appetizers.
We passed one table where there was a fresh salad overflowing with great ingredients. I almost ordered salad. The beer selections were good, my drink was well poured, the glass was cold (not straight out of the dishwasher) and we were pleased right away.
We started with a crab cake appetizer. It was well prepared, crispy sizzled on the outside and tender in the middle. The lemony beurre blanc made my tongue dance. At $26 for 1 crab cake, it better be good.
Then he ordered a golden brown and delicious Reuben off the grill. Mouthwatering.
I had the crispy ahi tuna wonton nachos with guacamole crema, sweet soy dressing, and cilantro micro greens. (Not your typical chopped cilantro.) The ahi tuna was generously served.
The atmosphere was cosmopolitan chic, the silverware was clean and even a little sparkly, and this was overall a great experience.
The outdoor dining area was pet friendly during the warmer days.
Great atmosphere, great service, pretty amazing menu, and overall a great choice.
Overall, it was a nice visit… I’d return and maybe try more.
However, it felt as though we were judged for not fitting the mold of old money or local celebrities, as our seating arrangement was quite poor. We waited an extended period before being served, to the point where we contemplated leaving. Our reservation was for a weekday at around 5:45 PM, and our table was located right by the outdoor patio, where the door kept swinging open, creating a chilly draft. It was so cold that the constant door traffic extinguished our candle. We ended up huddling to one side in an attempt to stay warm, as it seemed almost deliberate that every food runner, hostess, server, and bartender would swing the door wide open each time they passed through. Only one hostess showed us any consideration, opening the door slowly and carefully to minimize the draft.
Our server was noticeably less friendly towards us compared to other tables, which added to the feeling of being judged. She offered us bread, but it arrived without plates, and by the time she brought the plates, we had already finished the bread.
On a positive note, the food was absolutely delicious. My pork tenderloin was perfectly cooked, though it was cold due to the draft, and my husband raved about his lamb chops. The truffle fries were fantastic, and I particularly enjoyed the deviled eggs. Unfortunately, we left feeling cold and disappointed, as the constant opening of the door disrupted our conversation and made it difficult to enjoy the evening.
I’m hesitant to recommend Larkin’s to anyone unless you appear to be famous or wealthy. We felt overlooked, and it was not the celebratory experience we had envisioned for my pregnancy.
It was Incredible! Food was spot on, and the service was wonderful. It was a restaurant of traditional or conservative flair, not trendy, but has lasted the test of time in downtown Greenville. Great spot with outdoor views, and seriously the best steak we have had in SC! My wife said it’s the best steak that she has ever eaten… Was able to cut with a butter knife.
