– Delicious hot sandwiches (I had their Chicken Parmigiana sub), the bread was perfect.
– Atmosphere is typical deli. It’s small inside with no seating area inside. Standing room for ordering only and it’s tight. There are about 3 small tables with chairs outside. Total seats about 8.
– My only two negatives are, they charge 3.99% if paying via credit card. That’s really high. So bring cash.
– Lastly, my sub was delicious but could have had a bit more chicken.
Let’s start with the gripe: V&S is practically wallpapered in Boar’s Head branding. That might fly at Publix for a Pub Sub, but in a real Italian deli? Hard pass. Cold cuts here usually don’t do it for me. That said, they’re not 100% Boar’s Head — there’s Citterio in the mix. On one visit I took home a prosciutto, roasted red pepper, red onion, and fresh mozzarella sub on a seeded roll. No Boar’s Head in sight, and it was excellent.
Where V&S truly shines is the hot food. Chicken cutlets, meatballs, sausage, and especially the eggplant all have serious fans. I tested it with the eggplant parm sub — because eggplant is a benchmark most places fail. Here, it’s done right: layers of properly seasoned fried eggplant, good-quality mozzarella, a ladle of rich sauce, and that big seeded Italian torpedo roll. The thing is massive; I barely managed half of a half. At $21 with a Manhattan Special (no diet version, sadly), it’s easily sharable.
On another visit, I rolled in too late for breakfast (they cut off at 11), but the staff kindly cleaned the grill and still made me a bacon, egg & cheese. Eggs cooked perfectly to order (over easy), bacon crisp, and again — that monster seeded roll. Service like that earns real points.
And don’t skip the prepared foods case — I’ve raided it for meatballs, arancini, antipasto salads, and more. All have been solid and worth taking home.
Verdict: V&S remains a Boca institution for a reason. Forget most of the cold cuts. Stick to the hot sandwiches — the eggplant parm proves they know what they’re doing. And if you’re early, don’t sleep on breakfast.
I give the atmosphere 3 stars because the wait was as anticipated for a hot sub ordered, but the size of the deli is limited making the wait kind of uncomfortable-suggest ordering online. Also, there is a 3.99% upcharge for credit card so bring cash if you can.
The sandwich was incredible. I just was not in love with the meatball, but that’s okay.Everybody makes a meatball different.
