Marco Polo has been a beloved restaurant in my family for over a decade. We spent many special occasions here and always loved the food and service! While visiting my parents over the holidays we decided to treat ourselves to dinner here, but found it under new ownership. It was unwelcoming and unprofessional from the moment we stepped in. They refused to honor a gift certificate that was purchased within several months from that date (which is not legal under Oregon law), but we decided to stay anyway and give it a try. Our server was unkind and had no understanding of the vegetarian menu. We didn’t get the correct dishes and when we politely asked for the dishes we ordered, the server wasn’t apologetic or helpful. The dishes we did receive were pathetic versions of our old favorites. I have been a server at times in my life and am very forgiving, but I couldn’t believe how many things went wrong and how those mistakes were handled. The prices were also higher and the ambiance has taken a turn for the worse. My parents are the sweetest, but they felt so unwelcome and said they’ll never go back again after that experience. It saddens me to know that one of our favorite restaurants has lost its heart. I hope the staff works on being kind.

Good comfort food. Not going to be the best you’ve ever had, but it’s consistently good and tasty. I had the gluten free chicken parm, peach old fashioned, spinach artichoke dip, and flourless cake. My fiancé who is celiac has been able to eat here safely for years, and I was happy to be able to eat some comfort food after a long travel day. Classic, cozy interior too

We had not been in several years, so my smoking hot girlfriend and I dropped in to give dinner a try. Everything we ordered was very good. We got everything we could at spicy hot levels. And it wasn’t too super spicy. The staff were nice and attentive. They have lots of menu options for vegetarians and vegans. Had a good time. Would come back again.

We went for a birthday celebration. We didn’t have to wait to be seated. I got their General Tso’s Chicken plate with white rice. The chicken was juicy and fresh. Also, I was able to try their Beef Pad Thai. It was delicious. Great atmosphere and customer service.

A complete waste of time. Horrible service. We walked out.

we had a lunch group of 7, we were asked if we had a reservation, we didn’t , but asked if that was ok. The hostess said it was fine, they were super slow. We were seated in a back room, and then completely forgotten about. We tracked down a staff and were given water after about 20 mins. The staff said our food would be out soon, we informed the staff no one had come to take out orders, not even drink orders , she said a staff was assigned to us, but she would take our orders, then left and never came back after a title of 40-45 mins we all got up and left, as we were waking out the staff that said she would take our order was standing around the corner and waved us good by and said she understood why we were leaving.

Here’s the thing, if we needed a reservation, we would have happily gone elsewhere, we are not picking or demanding people.

If they couldn’t accommodate our group on a slow day, why seat us?

This is the 1st time I have ever left a restaurant for bad service.

I had never eaten here and had heard great things. So to be treated this way was a complete shock.

Our group called Sassy Onion and let them know a group of 7 was coming in because by then it was almost 2 pm and they closed at 3.

Sassy Onion was more than happy feed us and take our large tip.

Great food, large portions, friendly staff. I had the spinach ravioli and it was SO good! My future son-in-law had a mountain of chicken fried rice. Would definitely recommend this place!

Made a reservation large-ish party but it was made well in advance.

We didn’t see food for an hour and 20 minutes, no apology, no explanation, and obviously incredibly unprepared.

We had to politely ask them to at least bring the kids food out. They brought everyone’s food out but the kids….

We had to get up and ask them twice for ketchup just to be met with attitude “I only have 2 hands”. The ketchup took a other 15 minutes….

Food tasted like fried air, pasta was hard and crusty on top and wet once you cracked a fork in to it, which is normal right? Also, Zero flavor.

Server never asked us how anything was just came out and said “so how am I splitting these checks”….

They added gratuity and if the service has been appropriate, we would have all gladly paid the 20% minimum. We all believe in tipping. But this wasn’t even a 10 dollar tippable experience.

We will never be back. Horrible restaurant. No wonder why it’s empty.

It was mid-afternoon on a week day, so not very busy. One server who seated and served. She did her job well but didn’t exceed expectations with friendliness or service.

I really liked the view from our booth, but the restaurant inside is just ok/nice – has a bit of a older feel. Appetizers and drinks were delicious, as was my food (Pistachio raspberry chicken). But I was incredibly disappointed with the seasonal Vegan GF pineapple orange cake. It tasted like bitter birdseed (and I’m usually good with those flavors, and seeds). The frosting was ok though. I tried a few tiny bites to make sure, then set aside. Server was unapologetic about me not liking it, pretty much hinting it’s fine so must be my taste buds. Other restaurants when there’s been a problem with quality and expectation, will take it off the bill. But she didn’t offer.

All in all, not sure I’d go back but maybe I’ll give a different dessert a second chance in the future. It is nice they offer many different cuisines, and l loved the appetizer combo plate.

Great food, good drinks, amazing service! The raspberry chicken was delicious and they make an amazing general tso chicken. The kid loved his chicken strips and fries, and he ate most of the dessert before mom or dad could get a bite. Good atmosphere and the staff are amazing and friendly.

My husband and I have made this restaurant a regular stop whenever we visit Salem, and it has usually been a 5-star experience for us.

Unfortunately, our last two visits were disappointing. Portions were noticeably smaller, and on both occasions we found a small fly in our soy sauce. Last time we told our server and she was very apologetic and brought me fresh rice. Today we awkwardly flicked it away, trying to hide it from our out-of-town parents. It was embarrassing.

In addition, the chairs are in poor condition, full of holes and patched with duct tape.

It is clear that the new ownership has not been a positive change for Marco Polo.
