About Zhangliang Spicy HotPot: The Streetfood Mala Tang hotpot Our Authentic Sichuan Food (Chengdu traditional food) At Zhangliang Spicy HotPot, we use the methods passed down in Sichuan, where it originated. The Malatang idea was formed from the hard workers on the Yangtze River in Sichuan. We stir fry over 20 different kinds of Chinese herbs and spices (including the prickly ash Sichuan pepper) before adding our Beef bone broth and our secret chilli oil mix before boiling it all together for 12 hours. This is how we create the most authentic Malatang soup base you know and love! We warmly welcome you and bring a piece of home here to Los Angeles.

Compared to Boiling Point, Zhangliang edges out with better value and a more authentic mala flavor profile. The service is efficient, though it can feel rushed during peak hours, and the ambiance is lively but not fancy—think functional, bustling, and unpretentious. For under $20, you’re getting a steaming, customizable hotpot that’s leagues above fast-food alternatives. If you’re in Rowland Heights and need a quick hotpot fix, Zhangliang’s your spot—just bring a tolerance for heat and a love for bold flavors.
Overall the food was very tasty. We liked it very much. Very simple choices and not overwhelmed like some giant hot pot places where you don’t know what to get. It really worth a try if you like hot pot.
This place locates in Diamond plaza. You have to drive all the way in to where Midoh, MeloMelo, The Alley boba is. There’s alot of parking here and underground parking toward the middle of the parking lot. It can get busy finding a spot nearby on nights because Chubby Cattle is a few stores away and its a popular spot for people to go.
The interior of this place is bright with orange and white wall. Once you get in, the left side is where you grab your food, the counter is straight ahead all the way inside.
I got the pork bone soup bases with mild spice level. This place only have spicy soup but mild spice is not that spicy because I’m someone that can’t handle spicy. Lots of different food to pick from. Soup is rich.
The server that assisted me doesn’t show alot of smile and when I asked him questions, he didnt seem that friendly. Not sure if he is just too bored / not enjoying his job / or thats how he is but you cannot be like that as customer service. You don’t need to please people but the way hows hes presented can really turn people away.
I wanted to give this place a 4 because the food and settings are all 4 but the server’s presentation had me make the decision of giving is a 3. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not mean or he said some bad things but
He needs to be aware of how he’s presenting himself.
Make sure to get the mild if you cant handle spice. the medium is pretty spicy.
However, note, there’s a procedure that you need to do, which is not written anywhere or how to do anything here. The staff either don’t really speak English, or they have a low mumble voice, either or, it’s very hard to communicate with them. They are also pretty rude and brash on the procedure of things and gets frustrated pretty quickly when you don’t understand what they’re saying.
You are supposed to sign up on the Yelp pad to get seated, though based on observation, they have no one coming out to seat anyone, even with tables empty. If you sign on the pad and find your own table, since you’ll need a place to sit after giving your order to them to cook, they’ll get pretty pissy.
Other than that, the food is priced at $13.99 per pound for soup bowls and $14.99 for bowl mix. What I find somewhat scummy is that the scale isn’t rated so your end price also includes the bowls weight, which itself isn’t light.
The food itself was alright, they had some interesting toppings, which I didn’t grab. Note that the Traditional Pork Bone broth has to come with some level of spice, which is suspicious, as if you had a traditional bone pork broth, you would want to let your clientele to taste the many hour simmered broth…unless they used powder to make their base and then use spicy oil to help cover that fact.
I’m not sure if I’ll come back here again, even though the food was alright, as I think you’ll have a better experience elsewhere.
