A modern and spacious place with delicious Southern flavors and an incredibly welcoming ambience. The beignet was warm and irresistibly fluffy, while the shrimp and grits were flavorful with a nice Cajun and garlic kick. For dessert, both the peanut butter cheesecake and the chocolate cookie were so yum. A lovely spot for enjoying Southern bites and either hanging out or getting some work done!

Order at the front and get seated. Not super busy and good interior seating. Food came out fast. Quantity is okay, but food all tasted good.

Went for weekend brunch and was able to get seated fairly quickly. It had a comfy/farmhouse/communal vibe with the tables placed pretty closely together. There’s a high top narrow island with seating as well. There’s noise level was pretty high but not so noisy to where you couldn’t hear your party. My cousin and I went with the shrimp and grits and shared an order of beignets. The shrimp and grits were phenomenal and a nice portion. 10/10. The beignets were a 8/10 just because I visited New Orleans earlier this year and had the ones from Cafe Beignet which I enjoyed so much more. The beignets here are still soft and pillowy and I would likely order again. I saw on the menu that they have fried green tomatoes as part of a specific dish but I really wish they offered them as a side. I haven’t had fried green tomatoes in forever and I just know they would’ve paired nicely with the grits. I hope the chef/owner sees this review and consider making it a possibility! All in all, we have already said that we’ll be back so I’m looking forward to my next visit.

We were looking for a quick and delicious breakfast place following an early U of Chicago appointment. This place was an easy 10 min walk from the hospital. It was pretty quiet for a Friday morning. Kind of a hybrid of ordering at the register / getting your own water, napkins, etc. with modified table service.
I ordered the fried green tomato tartine. Imagine a thick buttery toasted slice, covered with pimento cheese then topped with a lightly breaded tomato, thick applewood smoked bacon and a fried egg? Yeah. I had planed on stealing some of my husband’s grits but I ate every last morsel and was just too full.
I will be there again since hospital visits are going to be a thing for a while. It’s good to know this kind of comfort food is going to be serving it up all day.
FYI: the espresso lack the punch I typically am looking for.

Roux is an excellent spot for brunch. Among others, we ordered Beignets, a tart, The Classic, and the Chicken Fried Steak. All of these tasted fresh and savory especially the green beans that came with the chicken fried steak. Roux is now officially my go to brunch spot for that area. Will be back!

Talk about a pleasant experience. This place was it and more.
Everything was excellent.
My particular favorite was thr shrimp and grits. Tasted almost as amazing as the one I had in New Orleans❤️

Visited 12/15 morning. We got the brisket hash and catfish plate with deviled eggs and it was beautifully plated, but the taste was lacking. The catfish tasted of river. Not the fish nor the breading was seasoned. And the deviled eggs were decent enough. The brisket hash though, we got with and without the sauce and they were both pooled with unseasoned oil at the bottom. We tried with salt, pepper, and hot sauce and we still could not finish the hash and struggled with the catfish even with it drowned in hot sauce… aesthetically, it was great little cafe for small pastries (the beignets were GREAT) and the other pastry options looks delicious, but in reality, we were left disappointed and lowkey hungry still…

The food was ahhhhmazing! The service was even outstanding. We had shrimp and Grits, Grits with cheese and bacon added. The Fried Green Tomato Tartine was the most delicious open breakfast sandwich I’ve ever had. We carried out an order of beignets. We thought we were in Nola eating the beignets. Everything was soooo delicious. I can’t wait to visit again.

I come here regularly – nestled on 55th and embedded into the tapestry of the other eateries nearby for residents, visitors and the U of C community. The food is fantastic, from their savory sweet chicken and waffles (packs a little heat) to the tangy tarts and desserts. Shrimp and grits, catfish plates and other delicious plates are given a southern flair and is fairly priced for the portions. We rarely leave without leftovers to take home. The staff is very kind and the food is brought quickly. Front of the house seems a little young / I experienced, (forgetting to smile, acting a bit bored) but it’s good to see them working and learning. Overall, this place is a great choice!
