The space has the kind of warm, familiar energy where I could easily see a scene opening in one of my novels. A quiet table. Steam rising from a bowl. A conversation that turns serious. It has that classic, steady feel that works just as well for family dinners as it would for a thriller setup or a quiet romance moment.
They offer both dine-in and takeout, and there’s a separate room that works well for parties and gatherings. It’s often busy, which says something about how much the community supports it, but not so crowded that it becomes overwhelming.
They serve the classic Chinese dishes you’d expect, and my family has been ordering the same favorites for more than a decade. The flavors are consistent and reliable. I tend to order their Vietnamese pho, and it’s excellent. Rich broth, good balance, and exactly what I’m hoping for when I sit down.
The owner is a genuinely cool guy, and the staff is some of the most attentive in the valley. Service is quick, professional, and easy.
Mandarin Pine is one of those long-standing Lewiston staples that keeps earning loyalty year after year. Good food. Strong service. A place I’ve trusted for decades and still enjoy returning to.
Food: Ordered the #3. Cafeteria standard. There was some mushy slope of onions and celery, with shaved red bbq pork sprinkled on top which tasted somewhat like the overly thickened soup – I am guessing it is supposed to be some kind of salad. Sweet and sour chicken was dry but at least crunching until the sad sauce softens it (better to keep it separate), when I read crispy noodles, I expect the thin fried noodles, not some corrupted thick fried noodles pretending to be Asian food that you can buy from the grocery store. The spicy chicken .. wrong kind of spicy, but acceptable.
Service: Oh, they lost my order – but at least they came out to make sure everyone had been tended to, so kudos to that..
Atmosphere: feels more like a bar then a restaurant, but above average.
The food is very good, service is excellent, and takeout orders are a beast—probably two to one most nights, which can slow things down. Todd is a magician at the front. He remembers every seat, every order, everyone’s allergies, and when you change it up, he still gets it right—no notes needed. The service alone deserves six stars.
You won’t find anything truly crave-worthy on the menu, but if you want dependable, fast, and reliably delicious Asian food, this is the place to go.
How I rate Restaurants
★ Skip it. Not worth the napkin.
★★ Only if desperate. Starving, lost, or snowing sideways.
★★★ Forgettable. Nothing to see here, move along folks
★★★★ Worth returning. Solid, dependable, no regrets.
★★★★★ The reason you go. Crave-worthy, intentional, makes you pause—how did they make that?
I arrived about 6:40 and just sat in my car for awhile. At 7pm I went in. Nobody was at the front area. I waited for a few minutes as other people came in, waiting to be seated or for their order. Finally a lady ask for my name.
They weren’t overly busy. As people entered they were seated right away and the people waiting for their pickup orders were given them within a decent amount of time. I acted as a door man for everyone coming in and out.
Long story short I didn’t get my order until after 7:30pm. No apology, no discount nothing but a thanks for your patience.
Finally made it home a half an hour later to a starving wife and kids who i told I was going to surprise with some take out.
Wife made up my plate while I got settled in and what a disappointment. Realized rifht there that I will never order from this place again and that Panda Express has way better looking and tasting food, as well as better service in a much better time frame.
In this big $85 family meal, all you get is a bunch of old looking slop, and 3 half size kabobs. The teriyaki meat looks like a gray piece of leather and didnt taste much different. Such a waste of time and appetite.
However i had an unfortunate dinner recently… three of the items on my plate was cold. 🙁
