There is a quote that says, “Good things come to those who wait.” Actually, the quote says, ” good things come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.”
So thank you to y’all hustlers who left me some of the good food served at Tater Que. Let’s get to it.
I went for wings on a Wednesday, because owner Bobby Mack told me to do it. I ordered 10 wings, five with their Spicy Buffalo Sauce and five without sauce so I could try their Hot Honey, Lemon Pepper Ranch and Spicy BBQ sauces.
The wings are huge, both the flats and drums. They are also juicy. Most importantly, they were cooked perfectly. A major pet peeve of mine are large wings that are not cooked enough. If I bite in, and see undercooked meat, I throw it right in the trash can.
Tater Que wings are breaded and deep fried. The breading is light, but still sticks to the wing. Perfect amount of sauce. For the five wings with no sauce, I liked the Spicy BBQ best, followed by the Hot Honey. I had one wing with the Louisiana Hot Sauce on the table. I love that tang.
I tried a small order of the Fab 5 Mac & Cheese. While it had nothing to do with the Michigan Bball team, it did have five cheeses perfectly blended together in a creamy sauce. I could have done large order of that instead of the small (which is still perfect as a side).
I am not sure how you go to a restaurant called Tater Que and don’t try a Spud with BBQ on top. I decided to try one of their Specialty Spuds, the Alamo. I got the Junior size. The potato and toppings had to weigh five pounds. I can’t even image what size of potato goes into the large. Yikes. So the Alamo is topped with smoked brisket, BBQ baked beans, smoked bacon, sour cream, chives and BBQ sauce ( I chose the spicy). Oh yeah, the spud is first slathered in butter before all that is stacked on top. It was a masterpiece, and tasted incredible! No, I did not eat it all. It will serve as dinner, probably for two.
I posted up a copy of the menu as well. Their Fish and Tender Meals looked good and I wanted to see how they compared to Whip My Soul’s version. If you haven’t been there, do Tater Que on a Saturday and then Whip My Soul on Sunday.
Bobby and Bobbie (wife) and their awesome staff will take care of you and make you feel like a regular even on your first visit. #MattGoodEats
The only downside was the music volume, which was a bit loud for our preference (especially since my husband is hard of hearing). Additionally, we were surprised to see a $2 charge for small water cups. The receipt listed it as a “kids fountain drink,” which felt unusual since most restaurants typically offer tap water at no cost.
Despite that, the food quality and overall experience were great. I’d definitely return the next time I’m in Pflugerville, though I’ll be sure to hydrate before heading in!
The food took kind of a long time and the restaurant was blaring country music (not the good kind) very very loud. Like deafeningly loud like you would hear in a club. It was a weekday in the middle of the day and almost no one was there. Really unpleasant music!
To top it off, I paired it with one of their frozen margaritas, and wow—smooth, refreshing, and just the right kick to balance out the richness of the spud. The combo was perfection!
The vibe is welcoming, the portions are generous, and the flavors are unforgettable. TaterQue has officially raised the bar for what a loaded potato can be. I’ll be back again and again!
