I was a walk-in on a Saturday at 6:00pm. I sat in the bar which was half full if I’m being generous. I didn’t see the dining rooms but the place didn’t sound full.
Let’s start with the objective truths:
My steak was cooked how I asked.
My steak came out fast.
The steak was a good size for the price.
Now my subjective opinions:
The bar upstairs was playing 90’s grunge/rock. Fantastic.
The garlic green beans were incredible. They taste like I paid extra for them.
I got the gouda bacon bites as an appetizer and they were punching well above their weight class.
I don’t know how to end this review. Get in your car and eat at this place.
Only suggestion: it would be awesome to have a TV added to the Red Garter bar area. It would make the vibe even better, especially for game nights or just catching some entertainment.
We ordered two steaks which come with two of the regular included sides. These regular sides are very limited in what you can choose from. I decided to upgrade to an “elevated” side for both of my included sides. Each elevated side is an additional $4. This was a loaded baked potato and asparagus.
The asparagus was skinny, soaked in oil, and cold, with no seasoning that I could taste. I was given 4 or 5 very skinny pieces. The baked potato was loaded, but the skin was not coated and crisp, it had no salt. Because both of these sides were bland with 0 seasonings I added salt and pepper, funnily there was not salt on the table? I had to ask for that. The most common seasoning.
When we received our steaks (A porterhouse and a Tbone) which was ordered medium rare, our steaks were medium well. Barely any pink, basically cooked. The only seasoning appeared to be added was rosemary. We sent the Tbone back while I accepted my porterhouse sadly. The next steak received to replace the non medium rare Tbone was also medium well, infact even more well done.
A Jameson double shot straight/neat was ordered which was $16. This is the price od the bottle off the shelf in any store, same brand. High price but its a restaurant, so I digress. The server asked if it was wanted on the rocks. I get not everyone knows bar “lingo” but if you dont know it, you respectfully shouldnt use it or learn it. We said no and asked for neat/straight. We received ice.
Back to the sides — I salted my potato and was beginning to enjoy what little seasoning the place provided, until I found out the skin infact does have salt. It was all in one big blob on the bottom in a concentrated small area stuck on the skin. I bit into it not looking (silly me) and contemplated if my potato turned into a salt block. Why is the salt concentrated in one specific area of the potato and not covered across the skin? Its not even spread on the back it was in one concentrated area the size of a nickel?
The Tbone came with steak house fries. They had 0 salt, did have some black pepper, no other seasonings. The inside was well done but the skin was not crispy what so ever. Honestly tasted like a walmart frozen bagged potato wedge :/.
Another thing I had contemplated after paying and leaving — The “elevated” sides are $4 each when pudchased standalone…since the regular sides are included in the steak price and you get two, but you can upgrade for $4, why are they full price on top of the standard price? I could have just gotten two regular sides that are included in the steak price and the “elevated” sides as a standalone and paid the exact same amount but got more food?
Bill was $133 (not including tip) and this is also after getting a “discount” of $16. The server said they took off the drink as it would provide the highest discount they can offer despite the drink being messed up.
You can eat at any other steakhouse and get a quality steak that you can appreciate and the sides you prefer at a non egregious price.
On to Service: Pretty good, server was very nice and did advocate for us on the cooking and was very attentive and even went the extra mile when we didn’t ask. Id say the servers is the only thing keeping this place in business (other than the monopoly they basically have being one of the only steakhouse in the area). Gave a generous tip and appreciate the service even with the drink error, because it was just that good :).
On to environment: Its okay. Its cool you can sit upstairs, its pretty quiet. My only complaint is the upstairs booth and lack of formal directions to your tabling or seating etc. Booths in corners shouldnt be square tables or hugged up against other tables that are not booths. They should be rounded and well spaced…
Ordered a medium rare steak – what I got was a medium well. I almost never send one back, but I really wanted a decent steak. I returned my steak with one bite eaten for a medium rare, but it was so heavily seasoned. I could barely taste the meat. No finesse. The green beans had a not great but OK taste but they were tough and very stringy. If you get a salad for one of your two sides, it’s an extra $4. If you get a loaded baked potato, it’s an extra $4 which I can understand a little bit. My basic baked potato was quite hard. I can honestly say the best thing in the meal was the cold Bud Light. Jerry’s or Denny’s would’ve given me a better steak dinner and I was just really looking forward to a good experience. Maybe in another year I’ll try again, hoping for that solid, anticipated steakhouse experience. Gave an overall 2 because food is weighted consideration.
