“It’s a Mexican FAMILY Restaurant…” Elias Benavidez, the founder of the El Caporal Restaurants, was frequently heard explaining to employees and customers. The first El Caporal was opened in 2004 with that mission to create a Mexican family restaurant, where good food and a comfortable welcome was for everyone. To walk into an El Caporal is to walk into your local Mexican restaurant, and it goes beyond just fajitas, tacos, and margaritas (Although we make delicious fajitas, tacos, and margaritas!). We offer a wide variety of classic Mexican dishes made with the freshest ingredients. Our menu is inspired by our heritage; merging Latin flavors with American favorites.

This was my bestie and my spot 8+ years ago and I on a whim remembered it. My boyfriend and I ate there tonight. It was served fast and hot. The waitress check on us several times to make sure we ordered and received everything before the kitchen closed at 9:45pm. I do not normally enjoy the white sauce at any restaurant in Virginia. Although I am proud that it’s a Virginia thing, so I at least try it. I loved the white sauce there! I believe I fell in love with white sauce that long ago Every white sauce I have had since then has been a disappointment and caused me to not like it. But I’m back home and I promise you that this is the best white sauce in Richmond!

⭐☆☆☆☆ – Disappointing Service and Cold Food
My wife and I have eaten at El Corporal near Regency Mall many times in the past, but this visit was bad enough that we won’t be returning.
We were seated and immediately ordered two medium margaritas. After that, our waiter disappeared. A couple seated next to us after we arrived had their full drink and food order taken — and delivered — before ours was even completed.
My fajitas rancheras came out by themselves, missing half of my order and my wife’s shrimp chimichanga entirely. The fajitas barely sizzled for about a minute, were mostly green peppers and vegetables with very little meat, and the cheese on top wasn’t even melted. By the time the rest of our food arrived 10–15 minutes later, my meal was completely cold.
During all of this, the waiter checked on the table next to us but never once stopped at our table — even though I was clearly sitting in front of cold food.
At that point, we decided to take everything home to reheat. When I explained the situation, the waiter seemed confused, never boxed the food, and instead came back several minutes later with a check for just the margaritas, saying we only needed to pay for drinks.
Even that was disappointing. The margaritas tasted like straight lemon margarita mix — nowhere near worth the $10.99–$13.99 prices listed on the menu.
Very poor service, poorly timed food, and zero attention to obvious issues. Sadly, this was enough to ensure we won’t be coming back.

This is a hidden gem, everything was so good! The service was really nice and we got free refills on the salsa and chips. The prices were very affordable for HUGE portions.

I’m just here to add another 5 stars! Hands down probably the best Mexican I’ve had, either this or Chociloco in Scott’s Addition. I got the Burrito Macho Esteban and it’s spicy! Full of flavor and I will go back. The prices aren’t bad to begin with but the huge portion size I got made it even better! I was referred here by three friends and today was the day. You’ll never see the restaurant from the road and probably pass by it a million times and not notice. I feel bad for them, if they were in a more visible spot they would probably be slammed with business all the time. However, don’t let this detour you, the restaurant itself is not difficult to access. I will be back!!

I went here because of the positive reviews. I was not let down. The food is excellent and the service was great and friendly. Got the Burrito Loco and it was huge with a good serving of grilled chicken and shrimp inside the burrito. Parking is a little hard to figure out at first, but plenty of available spaces. Will come back here again.

I love coming to this place. The people who work here are awesome and the food is top notch. The drinks are even great (I can only speak for the piña colada). Food came out really quickly. Guacamole isn’t seasoned to my liking but I think it’s fresh.

The food is amazing!! Some of the best that I’ve ever had! This last visit the service was a bit lacking on refills. The guy refilled my daughter’s water but not mine. And then when my cup was empty, we had to wait for him to come around to get a drink!

From getting in, to coming out after eating, everything was exceptionally good. Their service was amazing and the waiter kept bring us back chips and salsa and the food was amazing. I will definitely reccomend to my friends and family.
