Reviews
Ammoora delivers excellent food in a beautiful space, with standout spreads, hot mezze, and well-executed mains, plus a strong cocktail + wine program. Cold mezze were inconsistent, and service on a busy New Year’s Eve was rushed and error-prone, with pacing issues and billing mistakes. Worth returning on a regular night, when the kitchen’s strengths would likely shine without the service pressure.
Atmosphere
Ammoora makes a strong first impression. The interior is striking without feeling overdone, clearly inspired by Syrian design, and the view into the kitchen on the way to the dining room adds confidence. We were seated in a large alcove that fit our group of nine comfortably, with plenty of options that would work just as well for a date or smaller groups. Gives upscale but approachable.
Spreads and Mezze
The spreads were the strongest part of the opening. The Hummus stood out for its texture and balance, smooth and creamy without unnecessary flourishes. The Beet Mutabal was equally impressive, offering something distinctive with real depth of flavor and smart contrast. All together, the spreads set expectations high.
Cold mezze were less consistent. The Vine Leaves Yalangi were solid. However, the Tabouleh and Fattoush underwhelmed. The Tabouleh in particular lacked the brightness and intensity that define the dish and instead felt closer to a generic house salad. For a restaurant capable of bold flavors, the cold mezzes missed the mark.
Hot mezze brought the meal back into focus. The Beyti Sujuk Rolls were excellent and one of the most satisfying dishes of the night. Batata Harra delivered perfect caramelization, good heat and balance, and the Mousakhan Chicken Rolls were deeply comforting and well executed. Hot mezzes were well executed and illustrates the kitchens potential.
Mains
The mains were very well done. The Braised Lamb Shank was rich, tender, and clearly the right choice for someone looking for something indulgent. My personal favorite was the Kebab Antabli. It is more straightforward, but bold, well seasoned, and deeply satisfying. Both dishes were excellent, just appealing to different tastes.
Drinks
The bar program deserves credit. Qahwa Dreams is one of the better espresso martini variations I’ve had, thoughtful and balanced rather than overly sweet. A Dry Gin Martini further showed the bartending team’s precision. Their sommelier was also knowledgeable with a deep cellar of wines including Syrian exclusives.
Service
Service was the main issue. We dined on a New Year’s Eve prix fixe menu that was clearly advertised as time-limited. Despite arriving on time for our reservation, we waited about twenty minutes in the lobby with no apology or real acknowledgment. Once seated, service felt rushed, as if trying to recover lost time.
In the rush mezze plates were taken away *without asking* before the table was finished. My main did not arrive with the rest and was only noticed after I flagged down the staff, delaying my meal ten minutes.
There were smaller issues, bread had to be requested multiple times, drink orders had to be repeated, declined mezzes were ordered on our behalf (octopus). The bill included accidental charges totaling about $120 for duplicative items which was corrected quickly.
At this caliber of restaurant, smaller issues happen, but being rushed and having plates removed to rush through service is frankly unacceptable especially considering the delays were caused by Ammoora.
Final Thoughts
Despite the service problems, the food itself was excellent and the kitchen clearly knows what it’s doing. The atmosphere is one of the best in the city, and the staff is knowledgeable. This experience felt shaped by the pressures of a holiday service rather than the restaurant’s true standard.
I would return on a regular evening and expect a much better experience. Ammoora has the food, space, and talent to be outstanding with more consistent service.
Ammoora exceeds your expectations by any standard in a restaurant. We had the pleasure of trying some amazing appetizers recommended by our server.. the spicy hummus, some of the best harissa cauliflower I’ve had in my life, and the Beyti rolls. For the entree we had the Lamb Shank that was so tender. Ammoora is truly an experience. If you’re lucky enough to get seated in the back you almost feel transported to Syria.. With the hospitality shown from the staff, the general manager Ivan, this has become my top restaurant in Baltimore. It also has made me and my partner explore parts of the middle east now..
You must try.
First of all, Middle Eastern food is often not found in this fine dining setting, which is such a shame. The food is elegant and beautiful and full of flavour and works extremely well in the fine dining arena. The funny thing is, they didn’t even have to reinvent the dishes or anything to make them “fine dining” which shows how inherently elegant Middle Eastern food is. But, not only was it lucky to find Middle Eastern food in this setting, they actually pulled it off. And pulled it off well. The food was outstanding. Full of flavour, brilliantly executed, just wow. Even the drinks are impeccable.
The atmosphere of the restaurant makes you feel like you are in a palace in Arabia or something. The decorating is perfect.
Lastly, what wonderful service. My server, osama, was such a wonderful young man and really made me feel relaxed and welcome.
I cannot speak highly enough about this place. I think I’ll come back to Baltimore just to eat here again.
