My friend and I stopped by this place on a Monday evening for dinner, mainly to catch up and enjoy a relaxed conversation. Since we arrived right when they opened, the restaurant was quiet and not crowded, which made it perfect for a calm and comfortable evening.

We started with three appetizers — Brussels sprouts, fried calamari, and the complimentary bread with olive oil. The herbed olive oil was excellent, though the bread itself was fairly standard. The fried calamari was well done: crispy, not rubbery, and very satisfying — I’ve always been a fan of good calamari, and this one delivered. The Brussels sprouts were a standout, topped with balsamic glaze and shaved Parmesan, which added great depth and balance to the dish. The appetizers were quite filling, and we almost felt full before the main course even arrived.

My friend ordered a cocktail, which she enjoyed. For my entrée, I chose the chicken marsala — classic chicken breast cooked in a marsala wine sauce with mushrooms, served alongside mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables. It was a well-rounded plate with protein, carbs, and veggies, comforting without feeling overly heavy. While it wasn’t the best chicken marsala I’ve ever had, it was still good — the sauce had nice savory, umami notes, and the chicken was tender and perfectly cooked. The vegetables were also well seasoned.

My friend ordered the rigatoni pasta, which she described as good, though I didn’t get a chance to try it myself.

Don Giovanni on Castro Avenue is an absolute gem in Mountain View! I’ve eaten at so many Italian restaurants, and this one is by far the best I’ve ever been to. The food quality is out of this world, the service is incredible, and the atmosphere is just perfect. If you’re looking for authentic Italian food with a great vibe for a date night or a family dinner, this is definitely the place.
We actually just stumbled upon Don Giovanni while looking for a place to eat on Castro. The manager was standing at the door, and as a customer walked out, he said, “This is the best Italian food I’ve ever had!” We weren’t sure if we had enough time to eat, but the manager was so incredibly nice, and with his charming Italian accent, he just invited us right in and told us to grab a table. What a welcome!
The menu has such a wonderful selection of authentic Italian dishes. Our waiter was a fantastic guy, so courteous and super attentive. We started with a fresh salad and some warm bread, which came with this amazing authentic olive oil, garlic, and pesto dip.
For our main courses, we ordered the fettuccine, the fettuccine with prawns, and the penne pasta with Italian sausage and bell peppers in a red sauce. Let me tell you, this was the best quality Italian food I’ve ever been served in a restaurant. The pastas tasted so fresh. The fettuccine sauces were genuinely creamy and seasoned just perfectly, clearly made with real ingredients. The prawns were generous and super fresh. And that penne pasta with the Italian sausage and bell peppers? It had such a delicious, fresh tomato flavor! I honestly can’t explain how fresh and how much care went into making these perfect plates of food.
The restaurant’s atmosphere is just wonderful. It has this charming, old-world feel that’s really comfortable and pleasant. Everything was spotless, the tables, the silverware. And the service? It was truly the best we’ve ever received, with so much attention to detail. The manager himself was a wonderful guy; he made sure we were comfortable and enjoying our meal and was great to chat with.
Overall, this place gets 10 out of 5 stars from me! This is some of the best Italian food I’ve enjoyed in a very long time. This is hands down the best Italian food in the Bay Area. We are absolutely coming back here again!

We were a big group and food was either a hit or miss based on what we ordered.
1. Salmon or fish of the day was good.
2. Spumoni dessert was good.
3. Marinara sauce pastas were good.

I took Linguine Mediterranean with pasta and I am not a great fan. No flavors no salt.

I reserved this restaurant for a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner at 8:30 p.m. My wife and I were disappointed with the chef’s inability to get her dish correct and our waiter’s lack of attentiveness. My wife ordered the New York strip medium and when it came, it was well done and the steak quality looked similar to a skirt/flank steak not a New York strip. We waited for our waiter and explained our thoughts to her, and decided to switch the dish out with another steak dish.
This time my wife agreed the filet mignon and requested to have the temperature to be cooked to medium. When the steak finally came, we were in need of water and asked for water from our waiter. She advised she would be right back (this waiter throughout our dinning experience would be gone for extended periods of time. I always had to flag her down in passing). While the waiter was away, my wife began cutting into the steak and discovered that it had been prepared rare to medium rare. It was severely under cooked.
I noticed our waiter had not returned to our table after about 10 minutes or so to bring our water nor to check to see if my wife was satisfied with the second dish. However, I could see the same waiter towards the front of the restaurant talking, laughing, and interacting with other restaurant staff at the bar area. Then our waiter disappeared. We sat and waited about 15 minutes before finally flagging down another staff person telling him about my wife’s meal and the water situation. This waiter observed the steak and acknowledged it was cooked rare. He asked if we wanted to send it back to the kitchen and at this point we were ready to be finished with this restaurant experience so we said no. We asked for a to go container. The waiter brought the container and then left. After about 5 more minutes, I flagged down another staffer and asked for our bill. When the waiter brought the bill, I asked what happened to our initial waiter? He advised that she had to leave. No further explanation (it was an emergency, she got sick, etc.) Just left. The check was the full price for the steak dish. My dish was the chicken parmasean. It was okay but nothing special. My chicken had flavor, but was overcook. The texture was dry and tough. I paid for it, didn’t argue, but based on this experience, I will never dine at this establishment ever again. It was a terrible Valentine’s day experience.

You want good authentic Italian food go to Don Giovanni’s. It has the best in town. The minute you you’re greeted with a smile from the staff. The restaurant has a very cozy feeling. Love the food and the service. They do have the creamiest and tastiest fettuccine in town. Love their Eggplant Parm. I could go on and on. Everything I’ve had there is delicious. Can’t go wrong. And as for the service, it’s top notch. Very attentive. We had a great time everytime.

The food was okay and reasonably priced compared to other premium Italian restaurants. I dined in for one item and also placed another order to go.

I usually tip at least 20% when dining in because the servers take care of you, bring your food, and provide service throughout the meal — it feels fair to leave 20% or more. For takeout or pickup, I typically tip around 10–15% since the level of service is lower.

However, I noticed that the server had already written in a 20% tip on the total, which felt a bit inappropriate to me. It came across as somewhat cheap. That said, I was planning to leave a 20% or more tip anyway. If you want 20% tip, just charge it, put it in menu upfront, I won’t mind, make it even easier. But it just how the treatment felt- won’t go back again, felt like disrespect.

I really like the outside environment where the street was closed and well decorated for the holidays.

First the waitress placed some bread and oil based dipping on the table – I really liked it and had to stop my self a few times from filling up.

I tried their calamari as an appetizer, it was fresh and very tasty.

The breaded veal was fresh and delicious. It was cooked just right and came with vegetable and mashed potatoes. The whole dish was absolutely amazing.

The night ended with a chocolate cake – very tasty and what an awesome presentation.

The staff was very nice and very attentive – what a customer experience !!!

Don Giovanni’s was amazing! The food was delicious and the service was outstanding! The atmosphere was perfect, we sat outside for dinner and the weather was great and there was even some live music down the street that we could hear! The owner was lovely and gave us free cannolis (Which was probably the best cannoli I have ever had). It was definitely some truly authentic Italian food! I would recommend this place to anyone!
