We went to John’s for its historic atmosphere and amazing vegan options – neither disappointed! We started with vegan garlic bread and a deliciously fresh Caesar salad. So many vegan dishes suffer from lack of creativity, but John’s dishes were as unique as they were delicious and we savored every bite. The vegan tiramisu was otherworldly! Staff was very attentive and friendly. We will forever have fond memories of our evening together at John’s!

Every time we visit NYC, we stop at John’s. The pastas are all absolutely delicious. We have vegan besties in NYC that we like to go out and dine with and the vegan choices here are CARNIVORE approved. My husband is the pickiest eater, but this man had no idea he was having a vegan garlic bread or vegan Parmesan
I am in love with their Alfredo and their espresso martinis. The bread is amazing. I have had both vegan and non-vegan food/ice cream here and they’re both absolutely amazing. This is a perfect place for an intimate dinner, dimly lit, small, and the customer service is superb. I cannot wait to come back for more!

Could have sworn I reviewed this place. It’s a yearly must visit for me in the city. The food is outstanding and the portions are huge. It’s awesome a place that gives you complimentary bread still exists. The chicken parm is elite and the shrimp fra diavlo has a perfect spice to it. Cheesecake is electric as well

Classic NYC Italian restaurant. Impressive vegan and vegetarian menu with classic Italian dishes made without meat or fish or dairy (if you’re vegan).

We are vegetarian and they were able to give us real cheese and real pasta making vegan entrées into vegetarian choices. So you can choose to eat the classic Italian food, exactly as you would expect it, or a vegetarian or a vegan version of that same dish. Chicken Parmigiana, for example, or Seitan Parmigiana.

The waiter was really friendly and came with a classic nyc accent and attitude. All good!
While we were there, Dennis O’Leary was giving his downtown New York mafia tour that he leads. He had a group in the back room. Apparently this is a very popular thing to do. The tour starts here in the back room of this restaurant where Lucky Luciano used to hang out with his mob buddies.

History aside, this place is quite a find for any vegetarian or vegan. We love Italian food and miss having the classic red sauce dishes. This place delivers! We will definitely go again. Highly recommended!

I was here as part of a tour so maybe that effected my experience. I shouldn’t of liked the meatballs, I hate Italian sausage & seasoning unfortunately. But the meatball reminded me of my mommas meatloaf. So that tells you it wasnt authentic. And the spaghetti sauce reminded me of what came out of a Hunts can. Also I was hoping for some freshly made pasta at least the stories, history and ambiance of the place are amazing. Food that I had was subpar.

John’s of 12th Street, a classic old-school “red sauce joint” serving up Italian-American cuisine since 1908, is still a gem – and – they now have an additional full vegan menu, so there’s something for everyone.

We shared an arugula salad to start. She had the vegan ravioli; I had the eggplant parm (non-vegan).

Everything was delicious + the service is great too.

It started with the waiter greeting us at the door, who, with his hands in his pockets, only assigned us a table away from the door upon request and after consulting with a colleague (in an otherwise empty restaurant). That would have been the moment to leave the restaurant. We decided to stay anyway and then got a taste of what was to come when we ordered our food. The vegan dishes were extremely unappetising and the staff were rude right up until we left.

Definitely not recommended.

Went here for the start of a walking tour. A really interesting place with plenty of history and stories related to it.
We got to try the spaghetti as part of our visit as well, which was nice.
Would love to come back again one day and have a proper sit down evening meal.
