Today is Juneteenth, a holiday marking the end of slavery in the United States. While most people took the day off, I went in to work—determined to move my project forward and leave a strong impression during my internship. After a long, productive day, I treated myself to a barbecue feast at Donn’s BBQ on FM 969.

Though the place has excellent reviews online, the dining area was surprisingly quiet—perhaps because many locals opt for takeout. The restaurant gives off a nostalgic charm, with warm yellow lighting, ceiling fans, and a down-to-earth cafeteria layout. Behind the glass, I watched the staff slice brisket fresh off the pit—it was so tender it practically fell apart as I picked it up. The plate came loaded with juicy brisket, sliced ham, potato salad, fries, and white bread, with onions, pickles, and jalapeños available self-serve. It’s a simple but satisfying setup that puts the spotlight on the meat, just as it should be.

Here’s something I learned online: This Donn’s location was purchased in 1986 by a WWII and Korean War veteran, James “Jim” Howell. One of his early flight instructors? None other than astronaut John Glenn. Today, the restaurant is run by the Guerrero family, who’ve kept the place running through decades of change—including never closing during the COVID-19 pandemic. They’re known for all-day breakfast, brisket tacos, and a strong sense of loyalty to both customers and staff. The place opens as early as 5:30 AM—perfect for early birds chasing smoky perfection.

If you want no-fuss, traditional Texas barbecue with heart and heritage, Donn’s BBQ is a solid pick.

I added special instructions to a delivery and it failed with no response. It says on the receipt double spanish rice and they added double corn? Were they trying to be funny?

Had a plate of turkey, charro beans and potato salad. The turkey was moist and delicious, and the sauce was excellent too. Potato salad was one of the best I’ve had (and I’ve had a lot) and the beans were also great. Everyone was very friendly! Look forward to visiting again.

More like a hole in a wall restaurant. The meat here is good. I tried the sausage and briskets. The sides were not. The corn and the mash potato tasted plain. The rice was dry. The only decent side was the okra. There’s a good amount of tables inside. There’s free parking in front of the restaurant. The guy working there was really helpful. Overall, the price is really good.

**This place has really gone down hill.** Never received my fries with my order. I asked if they could do anything for me for the inconvenience since we were already 15 minutes into our meal, they said they could give us our fries to go. Poor customer service and attitude. I ate here 10+ years ago, REGULARLY, and it just really isn’t the same.

Donn’s is the best unsung barbecue spot in Austin. The nopale and egg tacos are my reason for this review, my Mom went out on a limb and tried one and now they are a family favorite!! Their barbecue brisket is also in my top 3. The timeless atmosphere inside of the restaurant will remind you that the good old days are still alive and thriving. I hope nothing about this place ever changes!!

Not bad but not worth the $45. Ordered: Pork Ribs, Brisket, Pot Salad, Mac Chz, and Beans.

Pork Ribs – 6/10, would’ve been 8.5/10 but the other 2 out of 3 ribs were dry like they had been sitting out for hours

Brisket – 7/10, moist but kinda greasy

Pot Salad – 8/10, solid

Mac Chz – 5/10, flavorless as reported by others. Adding salt and pepper sorta helped

Beans – 7.5/10, more savory as opposed to sweeter baked beans but it paired well with the potato salad

We came here because it was close to RODEO AUSTIN.

The BBQ is amazing!
The Sides were amazing.
The Ordering process is efficient.

Seems like a good working class Eatery with lots of locals and regulars.

The BRISKET was melt in your mouth, and no knife needed.

This spot is a Winner ….

Come here.
