Step inside and the room tells you everything you need to know. Wood-paneled walls. Old booths and tables with years baked into them. A worn counter that has seen a lot of coffee poured and a lot of mornings solved. This is not a place chasing trends. This is a place that feeds people.
The menu is long and unapologetic about it. Breakfast classics, Mexican staples, diner comfort, the kind of spread that tells you the kitchen knows what it is doing because it has been doing it the same way for a long time. This morning, I went straight for the chorizo omelette. Jalapeño cheese melted into the eggs, rich and spicy. Cilantro crema draped over the top, cooling things down just enough.
Here is the move, and it matters. Ask for warm corn tortillas. Do not skip this step. Tear into the omelette, stuff it into the tortilla, fold it up, and take a bite. The eggs stop being just breakfast and turn into something closer to a morning taco, rich, messy, perfect. Once you eat an omelette this way, plain eggs on a plate feel unfinished. This is how they should be eaten. Full stop.
Nannette went the other direction and ordered the waffle. It arrived the size of a small hubcap, thick and cakey, the kind of waffle that does not need help to be good. Crisp edges, soft center, sweet without being cloying. The kind of breakfast that feels indulgent but honest. A great way to start the day when there is nowhere you need to be in a hurry.
Nano Cafe has been quietly serving Monrovia for years, a neighborhood spot built on consistency rather than hype. Places like this survive because locals return again and again. Not for spectacle, but because they know the food will be right and the coffee will be hot. It is the kind of cafe Anthony Bourdain would have loved for exactly that reason. No performance. No pretense. Just a room full of people starting their day the same way they always have.
You do not come here to be impressed. You come here to be fed. And you leave thinking about warm tortillas, worn booths, and how breakfast does not need to be reinvented to be perfect.
Whether you’re in town visiting or a local, this is the go to breakfast/brunch place to go. They have a wide variety of food options on the menu, so even your pickiest eaters are able to find soemthing they may like.
I have tried several things on the menu and none have I disliked so far. Tried their new poutine dish with corned beef and it was delicious. The sauce was perfect, the texture and cook of the fries were perfect.
Food was delicious! I ordered the chilaquiles with chicken and it was incredible.
For my meal, I ordered the poached salmon eggs Benedict with hash browns, and it was outstanding. The eggs were perfectly cooked, the salmon was fresh and flavorful, and the hollandaise sauce tied everything together beautifully. The hash browns were golden and crispy, just the way I like them. To top it off, I had a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice that was refreshing and tasted like it came straight from the orchard.
The service was excellent friendly, attentive, and quick without feeling rushed. The ambiance is cozy and laid-back, with charming decorations that make it a comfortable spot to relax after a hike or just to enjoy a weekend breakfast. Even the bathroom was spotless, which I always appreciate when dining out.
Overall, Nano Café is the perfect spot for breakfast or brunch. Between the warm hospitality, delicious food, and inviting atmosphere, it’s definitely a place I’d recommend and plan to return to. Plus, it’s an ideal stop after a workout or hike with friends great food, great vibe, and the perfect way to refuel together.
As mentioned, the staff was extremely polite and very apologetic once they realized they forgot our order, and they even comped our drinks, which I think really made up for it. We weren’t in a time rush, but otherwise waiting for 50 minutes for a couple of breakfast orders was a bit extreme. We ordered an omelette which was very large and tasty and a Bacon Benedict, which I really enjoyed. The eggs were done perfectly and it had some great flavors. We also tried a Cinnamon Roll and it was honestly great. The only issue that we had was the very long wait time for food. Otherwise it was a very nice experience. I would give this place another try in the future and would suggest if you are in the Monrovia or Sierra Madre area.
