I have heard about this group and their restaurants but had not been. Our group picked this one to celebrate a very special friend’s birthday.

I was abit biased about their “fusion asian concepts”, especially a Vietnamese proclaimed but operates chinese dishes. Boy, they proved me wrong, my prejudices…

1. Shrimp hargow: 2.5/5 – fresh shrimp but tastes bland. The wrapper is torn up easily.
2. Sichuan bang bang chicken: 3/5 – good and different.
3. Calamari: 5/5 – delicious, squid was not fishy at all, so tender, and the coating was so crispy and light.
4. Beef roll: 3.5/5 – pretty good but not memorable, lacking scallions and cilantro, also needs a special sauce…
5. Pork and shrimp siu mai: 4/5 – delicious, fresh, good flavors, moist with crunchy texture.
6. Chicken dumplings in chili oil: 3.5/5 – pretty good but not special enough.
7. Dan dan noodles: 4/5 – yummy, flavors and taste were well balanced. Love their fresh noodles, chewy but not doughy, satisfying texture.
8. Spicy Sichuan noodles: 4.5/5 – so delicious. The Sichuan flavor came thru like floral, the sauce was umami. The fresh noodles were satisfying.
9. Char siu: 4/5 – pretty good, flavors are different than a great typical char siu I am used to. However, still good, very tender. The glaze was smoky with touches of sweet and savory.
10. Egg fried rice with fried pork: 5/5 – delicious. You would think a fried rice is typical or average but their fried rice was delicious on its own. No veggies, just eggs and seasoning, not greasy at all, the grains were fluffy and moist. The fried pork was delicious, well seasoned and moist, great flavors.
11. Cheung fun shrimp rice rolls: 3/5 – good, nothing special.

Stephanie, the GM, was so nice. Cody was great, very attentive to our table.

We really enjoyed the whole experience and definitely will come back or try out their other sister restaurants.

Qua adds to KEI Concepts latest modern Asian restaurant with a modern Chinese restaurant that is like Din Tai Fung and Tim Ho Wan made a baby together. Food and service were excellent. Plenty of parking in the plaza. We came for lunch, but definitely want to come back to try their dinner specialties

Food/Drink- 5 stars
Every dish was excellent, flavorful and not too greasy. I highly recommend the signature Crab roe, the century egg and pork congee

-marinated cucumber- good opener and well balanced
-Chili surf clam- fresh, spicy and well balanced
-“Cheung fun” shrimp rice roll- pretty good
-Pork and shrimp shin mai- juicy and excellent
-braised beef noodle soup- full of flavor and cooked perfectly. reminded me of Din Tai Fung’s version but with more mustard greens
-braised pork belly over rice- very good

Service- 5 stars
The servers were excellent throughout and made sure we were well taken care of

Bottom Line
Another smashing success from KEI concepts. Qua offers excellent food and service, with one of the best Chinese food spots in OC

You’ve all seen QUA on social media and we’ve all heard the buzz, but is it really worth a visit? This was my second time here, so here are my true thoughts.

The interior is posh and swanky, with a nod to Chinatown influences, with phenomenal service as expected from a Kei Concepts restaurant.

I love the drinks we got, like the Ming Dynasty cocktail that was both complex and spicy, and the Hong Kong milk tea.

Utterly OBSESSED with the crab roe dish–you can get it over rice or noodles, and comes in a cute presentation.

Most people’s biggest complaint is the pricing, but honestly, it’s pretty on par with other higher end spots in OC.

My favorite bites are the Sichuan bang bang chicken and the sinfully delicious dongpo rou that literally just melts away in your mouth.

Would I come back? Yes, and definitely won’t forget to make a reservation!

Thanks for reading! ^-^

Review 40/365 Day Challenge

I’ve always heard about Qua restaurant since I’ve dined a lot at the Kei Concepts and they are always emailing regards to restaurants promotions and new restaurant coming into their group.

Qua is a contemporary Chinese restaurant with a fine dining exquisite experience type of vibe. I thought for a 2nd it was a dim sum menu but they serve more than that.

I ordered the Hong Kong Tea to go and it was good. Saw that lot of people were getting that. A popular milk tea served w grass jelly topping and has a cold foam caramelized brulee topped had mee wanting it and i knew This is a must. It’s not surprisingly overly sweet.

The servers associates were all so friendly and attentive. Came by to refill the waters along cutting our “Dong Po” aka thick pork belly, so it may be served.

Lots of tables for dining. Really big and huge open. Stool chairs around the nice bar in the center. They have a banquet room hosting around 20-30 people and even have a back area of the restaurant where you can go towards the restroom for more intimate private dining to host a celebration.

Right when you walk into the restaurant. The atmosphere is really beyond exceptional and beautifully built with a modern yet Asian twist to it. Currently had it decorated for Valentine’s Day along w Tet/Lunar New Year Holiday. Lovely beautiful red paper flowers and coy fish on the wall for decor.

I love it here and plan to visit one day back with my family to try out other stuff on the menu.

Parking is huge. Located in same plaza as Albertsons grocery store, Brodards restaurant and right next to Goodwill.

Tip~DEFINITELY RECOMMEND trying the other KEI CONCEPTS restaurant in their group. You won’t be disappointed.

I visited QUA in Fountain Valley with high expectations because the restaurant is beautifully designed and has a very cozy, inviting ambiance. The service was the highlight of the night, our server was incredibly sweet and attentive.
However, the food was a bit of a hit or miss for me.
Crab Roe Noodles: This was the dish I looked forward to the most, but it was unfortunately too salty and felt quite heavy/rich after a few bites.
Kaya Toast: The toast itself was tasty, but it was very sweet. When paired with the soft boiled eggs, it became a bit too cloying for my taste.
Char Siu Fried Rice: Great flavor, but there was a significant amount of excess oil.
Shrimp Dumplings (Har Gow): These were excellent, the skin was the perfect thickness, and the shrimp was fresh and snappy.
Tofu with Century Egg: This was actually the best flavor taste of the night, but it was extremely spicy that I couldn’t eat more than a couple of bites.
Peach Oolong Tea was refreshing.
Overall, it’s a lovely spot for the vibes and service, but I wish the seasoning were more balanced. I may return to try other dishes.

Qua is Kei Concepts’ latest project, a contemporary Chinese restaurant as seen through a Vietnamese lens. The menu consists of classic dim sum dishes such as shumai and rice rolls among other popular Chinese dishes such as dan dan noodles and dong po rou. Clips of their crab roe noodles spreading online got me interested.

I’ve been to Qua twice now. Once for brunch during Christmas and once for dinner during Tet.

My extended family was visiting and thrust it upon me to find a last minute restaurant for Christmas brunch. Luckily, we were able to join the waitlist at Qua. We were told that for a party of 6, it would be an hour and a half wait. It wasn’t. We had our table in about 40 minutes.

The inside of the restaurant feels posh, modern, and inspired by Saigon’s architecture. The space feels wide and open, with a beautiful bar at the center of the room. I had the Secrets of Chang’E cocktail, a baiju base with barley shochu and flavored with mung bean and pandan. I really liked it. The rice wine was complemented nicely by the nutty barley. The mung bean and pandan were familiar sweeteners and married the eastern liquors with southeastern flavors. All this was served in a beautiful porcelain cup and garnished with an orange flower.

As suggested by our server, we ordered our crab roe with wheat noodles. The dish came deconstructed, with the noodles in one dish, the crab roe in another, and the garnishes such as wood ear mushroom and pickled cabbage on the side. You get to have a little moment where you pour the crab roe over the noodles yourself. It was delicious. The crab roe was rich with umami flavor. We ordered a side of white rice to mix with the leftover roe. The wheat noodles, however, were the perfect vessel to carry this mixture from the plate to your mouth. Perfectly chewy and bouncy. The noodles disappeared from our table in an instant and we immediately called our server over to put in two more orders. We had another with the wheat noodles and one with the glass noodles. Neither the white rice nor the glass noodles compare. You have to get it with the wheat noodles.

The shumai was really good. Very standard – or rather, it tasted like the shumai I would have at Vietnamese run dim sum restaurants while I was growing up in Orange County. I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

I liked the dan dan noodles more than I thought I would. I was expecting them to be heavy, but they were quite light. And with the cucumbers and scallions on top, it was actually refreshing. The XO Fried Rice with Char Siu was very good too.

The salted egg yolk lava bao got rave reviews from my cousins. The buns came piping hot. Tear them open and a heavenly warm, golden custard oozes out – a perfect balance of sweet, salty, and eggy. The filling was so good I was sopping the spilled bits off of my plate with the bun like a sponge.

The only dish I was disappointed with was the truffle “cheung fun” shrimp rice roll. I wish there was more truffle flavor, and the dish fell a little flat for me. I would’ve rather had the regular version with the sweet soy sauce.

During Tet, I manage to secure a last minute dinner reservation on OpenTable. My primary goal was to try menu items that were dinner exclusives, such as the XO Abalone and Dong Po Braised Pork Belly. We also got the last available roast duck, which is a February seasonal special!

The roast duck was really good. It was served Peking duck style, with wrappers, hoisin sauce, and thinly sliced cucumbers and scallions. I was most excited to try the Dong Po after seeing it on Culinary Class Wars, but um… it kinda tasted exactly like thit kho LOL. Not that it was bad, it was just… I mean it’s thit kho haha I just kinda felt like I have this dish every week at home when my mom makes it. I would pass on that next time. And the abalone was pretty good, but I wouldn’t get it again. The sauce for it was great though. We also tried the ginger scallion chicken fried rice and that was really good! It was like Hainanese chicken rice but in fried rice format – that was one of my favorites.

1. The crab roe is a house speciality, and it was surprisingly good! I also like the dim sum options!
2. The spot has fun casual vibes! The interior is spacious and very open!
3. The staff was friendly and attentive! Everything came out one-by-one!
Note: There are restrooms available for customers!

Following my visits to VOX and ROL, I went to QUA (QUA Contemporary Chinese Cuisine) today.

Since it was my first time there, I ordered a variety of dishes, and everything was delicious. The Chili Surf Clam came out first, and the sauce was incredible. It felt like a fireworks show in my mouth—so many flavors bursting at once. It was a bit spicy for me, since I don’t handle heat very well, but it was so good that I couldn’t stop eating it. The Dan Dan Sesame Noodle with Pork was also excellent, and I’m already thinking about going back just for that. The marinated cucumber was refreshingly bright, and the crab roe noodles were great as well.

Overall, the food is delicious, but the portion sizes are on the smaller side. It may not be the best choice for a family wanting to share dishes. Even for light eaters, two people would probably need to order at least three dishes.

I’m already looking forward to my next visit and excited to try more items on their menu.

Came for brunch and was not disappointed. Going have to come back to try all the dishes. But so far it’s pretty good. The dim sum was nothing special nor bad. I Liked the other dishes but couldn’t try the dinner menu. Service for this establishment was on point.
