Social Profile:

Best Quality Daughter houses a vibrant, chic décor and new, unique Asian-American menu. In 2018, chef Jennifer Hwa Dobbertin, wanting to address the sparsity of Asian-American female chefs in South Texas, developed a new concept through a series of pop-up dinners called Best Quality Daughter with fellow chef Anne Ng and artist Jennifer Ling Datchuk. Today Best Quality Daughter is located in the historic Mueller House at the Pearl Brewery. Curated by chef Jennifer Hwa Dobbertin, Best Quality Daughter’s menu takes inspiration from her travels and the comfort food of her youth as a second-generation Chinese-American.

Creative Asian fusion cuisine served in a funky dining room inside a restored circa-1900 house.

BQD is the best restaurant in San Antonio! Everything on the menu is phenomenal and it changes periodically. I also love the family style serving.

We made a lunch reservation for 1pm here and the service atmosphere and food were all amazing.

Drink recommendations: swear on your jade bracelet (such an interesting sweet taste), night shades and all the tea in china (more refreshing/fruity taste)

Food: cashew chicken, curry guisada, curry shrimp fried rice all AMAZINGG. especially the curry shrimp fried rice.

Our server was amazing also, very attentive. I would recommend making a reservation since it does get busy. Parking around the pearl is usually okay, lots of lot options and garage in walking distance. Make sure to arrive early for parking especially if there’s an event going on. Recommend for any occasion!!!!

Didn’t know about emerging Chef Jennifer spot or that Chef Jose visited till I visited the restaurant myself and tasted the amazing food. Situated in San Antonio’s Historic Pearl district, is a creative fusion cuisine that blends Chinese-American comfort food with other flavors such as mochi hush puppies, and mixed with all kinds of ingredients. We also had Dan Dan noodles mixed with brisket and waygu beef, curry that will blow your socks off with flavors and spice. Make sure you get all the sides, I enjoyed the popcorn chicken even though it’s a bit non traditional with the bigger pieces, but still plenty of flavors to bring you home comfort or boba shop memoriesm. Definite appreciated Chef Jennifer Hwa Dobbertin honoring her heritage and williness to try new things, and enjoy supporting another Asian food restaurant on the come up. It was a fun dining experience in a beautifully designed space. You can see the unique style with the decorations and art in a historical house. With an array of cocktails, all the teas of China was tasty and the jade bracelet was good too. Nightshade with vibrant colors and the marg looked good too. You won’t be disappointed with any of them. Overall an excellent experience. I would drive from Austin to dine there again. Make sure you make a reservation, I bet it would get packed. Also it’s on the expensive side of Chinese food dishes but strong portions and plenty of items you can share family style

Came in yesterday for the first time and it was amazing. It was Sunday around 2 PM. They are mainly reservation based and had a long wait to be seated inside but they did let us know that outdoor seating was available so that’s where we went! It was a little chilly but they turned on some heaters so it felt really nice!

Olivia was our server and she was so great!! They made sure to note any allergies and took time to explain how the restaurant works. They also explained one of the dishes to us so we weren’t surprised with the spiciness of the dish. Great service from them!

In terms of the food, I thought everything was so delicious! We ordered the pork fried rice as well as the dumplings and popcorn chicken. I loved the sauce that came with the chicken and the fried rice was SO yummy. The plates are family style so our main entree was the rice with the dumplings and chicken as our sides. It was me and my fiancé and that was plenty for us, we even had some leftovers. The dumplings had a sharper taste which was delicious but a little hard to get the grasp of at first but they are marinated very well which I liked. TONS of flavor! I’m not too picky about presentation so I don’t have much to say on that. As long as the food tastes good I don’t care what it looks like, haha!

All in all, this place was great! I can’t wait to go back!

Went here for a birthday and came back a week later because I hadn’t stopped thinking about their noodles and cocktails

The second time, we went during the Lunar New Year menu and again EVERYTHING was incredible. We got lucky and walked in around 6p on a Sunday and got seated immediately at the patio bar (which is walk-in only), and Gretchen (our server) was knowledgeable and super friendly.

The citrus salad was so fresh and full of flavor and the sea bass was incredibly seasoned and had a great crunch. The tofu was great and the portion on that was HUGE. But my favorite dish was the shrimp with Tom Yum noodles and a Panang kind of curry – it was seriously the best thing I’ve eaten in months. This entire place is top-notch. I live in Austin but I’ll eat here any time I’m in San Antonio

There are very few times when Google does not allow a user to give 10 stars and my experience with Best Quality Daughter is one of those times. Best Quality Daughter was a remarkable experience – 10 stars on all counts- food- service – atmosphere – and to this I would add diversity of people, dishes and sheer beauty where the former Head of the Pearl Brewery lived. Chef Jennifer Dobbertin’s Chinese-American heritage and travels have been skillfully developed into a fun, stylish atmosphere and innovative cocktails with unique dishes that blend Asian flavors with Texas influences. BQD was amazing. We started – and shared easily as dishes are serve family style- with the potstickers which were hearty and delicately flavored to perfection served with a side sauce of shiitake and ginger. The Mochi Cheddar Hush Puppies were fun too- large enough for one to be two or three bites! Cooked to perfection- no gummy interior. We were hungry so we added the smashed Cucumber thinking they may be served pulverized? But no! Delicately cut into perfect bite size with plenty of heirloom tomatoes sharing the bowl with a delicate and well balanced dressing that was not heavy- as refreshing as this fresh salad! Our entree included the Cashew Chicken (best Cashew Chicken I had EVER had- I don’t do spicy foods and this dish was ideal!!) and we could not resist the Drunken Noodle Red Curry Mole. I was prepared for it to be too spicy – but have no fear – not sure how the kitchen does it – but it too was delicious and overly spicy. It had a kick- but not so much that I had to grab water.

The NA drinks are as good as the with alcohol drinks- I enjoyed the Butterfly Pea Flower Lemonade – and then followed with Nightshade’s
(Allspice Infused Gin, Butterfly Pea Flower Syrup, Lemon, Tonic, Soda, Thai Basil). Oh dear. They were both divine.

We did splurge (with a little bit of tummy space we had left!) for a birthday dessert. The Vietnamese Coffee ice cream sandwich did not disappoint. It was an ideal late afternoon Saturday meal which easily carried us through a pleasant spring like evening in San Antonio, Texas. But before we left the Pearl venue, we did make our way over to Jue Let- a thoughtfully inspired bar also by the very brilliant Jennifer Doverton, with the name as a polite and thoughtful nod to the Chinese immigrant that raised James Beard.

The food was great and the service and staff were amazing. My only minor gripe was the menu didn’t have some common dishes you’d find at most Asian restaurants. But that got me out of my usual comfort zone. I was able to try something new and loved it. Big thank you to the hostess who was learning to make drinks and made us her two favorites. Lastly book reservations ahead of time. They seem to always stay busy

A very relaxing little place on the edge of the pearl. We enjoyed several sides and entrées and shared them between the three of us. Also indulged in a few cocktails. Everything was delicious and the service was fantastic! We stayed for 3 hours visiting and chatting. The restaurant started to get really busy and we never once were we bothered by the staff. This place is also not over priced like many places at the Pearl district.

I was really excited to finally try this place after hearing so many great reviews. It’s a charming, cozy spot set in a house from the early 1900s right in the Pearl District. Definitely recommend making a reservation if you’re going on the weekend.
Our waiter was super friendly and took the time to walk us through the dishes we were curious about, which I appreciated. We started with the Korean corn cheese spring rolls…absolutely a 10/10, so delicious! We also ordered the smashed cucumber salad. Since I make this at home pretty often, it didn’t stand out to me, so I’d give it a 5/10.
For our main, we went with the salt and pepper shrimp. The crisp was perfect, so I’d rate it 8/10. We’ve had this dish elsewhere with a little more flavor, but the dipping sauce they serve it with added a nice kick. We also tried the fried rice (not pictured), which was solid…about a 7/10.
As for cocktails, I had the margarita and the “Swear on Your Jade.” They were fine but nothing memorable…5/10 for both.
Overall, it’s a really cute spot for date night or even a casual lunch if you’re nearby. We’ll definitely be back to try a few more dishes!

We had wonderful food, but most people wouldn’t have the chance to eat here without reservations. The hostess is very quick to give a snarky response about being full till closing and they work off reservations. I asked for bar seating which she stated was also full, but that would be our only option. We went to the outside bar area which only has about 8 seats at the bar, but a large amount of open tables in “the bar area”. I asked another staff which I got the same snappy response when I asked which area was the bar seating area that they were full. We were then asked to go check in with the hostess, even though the hostess had sent us out here. We waited about 10 minutes before they said we couldn’t wait in the area we were waiting and sent us back to the hostess to “check in” for the open bar seating. We knew people were just finishing paying, but they assured us all of the guests are just mid-dinner and we would have a long wait if we got sat at all. For being an out of town guest, it was not inviting at all! We had walked over 30 minutes to get here so I wasn’t going to leave and walk to another place. We finally got a space at the bar area which cleared fairly fast compared to what we had been told. Our bar tender/server was kind, but one of our food items (green beans) arrived when we were done eating and ready to pay. I think it had been forgotten because she had to go check on it and told us that she had to get a manager to have it made. Customer service is severely lacking from the first staff that are supposed to be the most inviting or helpful, I can’t imagine how many guests are turned away and don’t return because of this. If my husband wouldn’t have recommended it (he was part of a group of 6-7 pilots / Boeing flight team that ate here without reservations) I would have walked out and not been back. Please talk with your hostess team about customer service skills!

One of my FAVORITE restaurants. The best dining experience. Moody lighting, unique drinks, creative vegan options & interior decor is so cool. Feels kinda like a tucked away spot in NYC. Wish I took more photos, but was too busy enjoying the meal. The impossible potstickers were the best I’ve ever had.
