Had some beer and watched Eagles throw interceptions Monday Night Football. We were clearly oldest people there. Good crowd. Excellent service.

Lindsey was a fantastic bartender. After what I’m sure was an insanely busy day with hockey valley, she went out of her way to help me with drinks and remembered my name and order each time I went up! Sometimes when bars get packed and the staff gets overwhelmed you can feel like you’re bothering them, but Lindsey took her time to be kind to me and it really stood out to me. I always love Champs, but last night was the best!

Champs is a statement in State College. This location gets busy but it’s quite large. The 360 bar has a lot of seats and, besides the first floor, there is an elevated “half floor” and downstairs floor with pool tables and other fun stuff. They card at the entrance.
The times we’ve been here we sat at the tables and at the bar and service was fast and the servers and bartenders were very very nice.
They have a large selection of beers and they are cheap; you can get the 16 or 20 oz and take out crowlers.
Food is good and the portions are huge.
Everything you’d want from a sports bar although it gets very busy!

The service here was top notch. We had a large party and our server was personable on time and had a great vibe, we really felt taken care of by her and the food was made quickly and they let us use the space for a long time.

I got kicked out for no reason? Of course a “drunk” person wouldn’t be coherent enough to review, but I got escorted out for wanting to use the bathroom? I’m so confused, no one would explain and I am a person of color. I feel like a problematic person wouldVe proved a reason to get kicked out but genuinely i ordered a slice of pizza and am so confused? Not a good look honestly. There’s nothing I did wrong tonight.

Cool place. Interesting with the multiple levels and the bleachers section.

The food at all of the related restaurants is good. Everything is good, some items are really good.

Lots of TVs, big booths.

A cool sports bar to hangout and catch up with friends. Multiple games available to have fun with. There is a restaurant on the ground floor and sports bar in the basement. Ambience is nice for a club. Variety in the drinks menu. Since its in a small college town, expect typical student experience at times.

Mixed feelings about this bar, lots of people come here, there’s always a line sometimes around the block, you’re always going to wait to get drinks, DJs talk on the mic way too much, had door staff call police on me as they thought my ID was fake, yet I presented two forms of ID and credit cards with same name, police arrived and verified it was real, wasted a good 30 minutes of my life. With all that being said I will still go back, but if the basement is busy I’m going there 100% of the time.

Another major issue I’ve experienced. I asked the bartender for their highest quality tequila mixed with red bull, the bartender did not mention that on “specialty event weekends” all custom drinks are automatically doubles, this was a $45 drink by itself, when she handed me my bill for 2 drinks it was $184…. I bit the bullet and paid, but around 4am my card was reopened and charged for an additional $184. Had to threaten champs management to going to small claims court to get the second charge dropped. Was told by management they were going to check the cameras to see how much I bought and he said on camera they saw me reopen my tab at 4am (they close at 2) and purchased 2 more rounds, I explained it was illegal to sell alcohol in pa past 2. In the end I got my money back, but why is the busiest bar in Centre county this stingy and money hungry? I work in the industry and there’s no excuse to reopen a customers tab and double charge hours after close, straight up attempted theft.

The renovations made Champs look 100% better. Definitely check out downstairs. Service is normally slow and keeps on getting slower the more crowded it gets (but that really shouldn’t be a surprise). They have a wide selection of beer and even have cider on tap. $1 tacos are pretty much the best deal in town and are pretty tasty too compared to the rest of the so-so food they serve.

State College Boys, aka S.C. Boys, Inc.’s Jeff Chen, who usually works the door – Line Leap on the weekends, got his feelings hurt. I met him in July 2017, and he usually does not allow me to skip the line. I’m OK with that.

On September 16, 2023, I waited in line, got a seat at the bar, and ordered an adult beverage because I was meeting a friend there for the Colorado vs. Colorado State football game.

I mentioned to the nineteen-year-old bartender that the turnover was high at the sports bar. I asked if the turnover was due to Jeff Chen. Quote: She said that people who work there cannot handle it. She said it was too much for them. In leading up to why I asked the question, previous employees told me Jeff was challenging to work for, so I mentioned his name.

Five minutes later, the bartender told Jeff what I said, and he approached me extremely mad. He told me, what if he went to my job and said I wasn’t nice? I’m cordial at my job with customers and colleagues. It appeared I hurt Uncle Chen’s feelings, but it was based on hearsay, so I am unsure what the bartender told him.

Jeff Chen wanted the names of former employees, and I was not going to give him the names of the numerous employees who have spoken badly about him and his management style. It’s a good thing it’s a college bar, so the kids are just trying to make a buck, and then they graduate.

Anyway, I was not disruptive and peacefully having a drink. I decided to leave and am now banned from the business, and that’s ok. Many others, including myself, are prohibited from participating in Uncle Chen’s Champs in State College, PA, home of Penn State Football.

Being banned at Champs is equivalent to being banned from Russia. Don’t go there!

NOTE: Mr. Jeff Chen at 139 S. Allen Street in State College, Pennsylvania: It is against the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act to deny entry due to one’s race, religion, gender, or disability. Please be advised.
