Reviews
When we got to our hotel, the desk staff handed me a business card with a discount on it. I like discounts, but the restaurant had not made the cut in my research. The staff then went on about how great the place is.
When I travel, I take recommendations from locals VERY seriously. So I redid my research on the place.
The menu was good despite the graphics on the website. I decided to make them a centerpiece of my meal plans.
The Pine Grill looks Plain on the outside and that was a misrepresentation. We walked into what came across as e wood-paneled cabin with rustic decor. That was just the first impression.
Starting with the appetizers: We got some onion rings (something I use for comparison from one restaurant to another). I also ordered a house specialty soup, Chicken Gnocchi. Never heard of it but it sounded great on a cool day. I am not usually a salad fan unless it is a bar and I can choose the contents, but it was excellent. Needed cheese and croutons, but still excellent.
Main course? STEAKS and Baked POTATOES!
I have had MANY “loaded” potatoes, but I have never gotten bacon “slivers” (not bits, not chunks) on a potation. NUMMMM!
Sue got the Ribeye and I got the Strip. Both steaks were not only cooked to perfection, but the marbling, and the just a smidge of fat for flavor. Mine melted in my mouth!
Desert: Pumpkin Ice cream. Simple, Basic, Seasonal. The perfect end to a fantastic meal. Our server, Maddie was a tad inexperienced, but she was attentive.
After the meal, we spoke with the owner, Mark. I told him that the business card/coupon was brilliant! Moreso that the hotel staff had been there and recommended them!
I thought the website needed work and Mark said they are doing a total redesign focused on the food and the interior. I mentioned that I thought the meal needed table bread. He said that was supposed to be offered. Our rookie server had not learned the routine. He gave us rolls to go! Mark said he has owned this place for 38 years. IT SHOWED!
Overall, a fantastic experience. If you are in Somerset? Make this place a top priority!
9.21.25 lunch
Arrived a little before noon and it was busy as expected for a Sunday. We were seated right away but waited several minutes for service that was friendly. Diane had the Haddock filet baked with a salad and applesauce. I had the cobb salad. I asked if the salad had deli style meat or cooked on site to which she assured me it was cut on site. After 1 hr and 15 minutes we received our food. Diane’s was cooked perfectly but even though it had some kind of seasoning on top it had almost no flavor. My salad was sliced in house but still just store bought deli meats with ok lettuce but very good and fresh tomatoes. Upon viewing the receipt I was charged $1.75 for the dressing of my salad which was odd but I found out the blue cheese dressing is extra. All the others come with it.
Overall, it’s a neat place with great potential but needs just a step up in food preparation.
Overall it was a great atmosphere but the food was nothing special.
My date and I both were super excited when we saw short ribs as the special! We both make fantastic short ribs at home and were happy to see them on the menu.
NOPE! The piece of meat I received was a very thin steak, looking thing with a few slivers of rib bones. It was chewy and not edible and looked like someone had boiled it!
The waitress was incredibly gracious and wonderful in agreeing that something was not right, so I ordered something else which of course took the whole dinner to get. My dates short ribs were slightly better, but still not even close to being what short rib should be- but he chose to keep them and try to eat them, but they were mostly fat.
For $35 they should have a cook back there who knows how to cook a short rib. It should’ve been 3 to 4 short rib bones with delicious chunks of tender meat, falling off the bone. That was not at all what they served. The cocktails were pretty good and our waitress was fantastic, but I have to question the management of a restaurant that would allow a Cook to send out what we got. I wish I had taken a picture, but I think I was just so shocked and a bit confused.
Order with caution!
The vibe is welcoming, the staff keeps things moving without hovering, and the portions are generous enough that you’ll probably need a nap afterwards. Prices are fair, the menu has plenty of variety, and it’s the kind of place where you can’t really go wrong no matter what you order.
All in all, Pine Grill is the kind of spot that makes you glad you stopped — even if your waistband isn’t. We’ll definitely be back.
