In 1975, following his retirement from professional baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Charley Sands entered the restaurant industry, founding a chain of establishments known as Charley’s. These restaurants were established across VA and NC, with the first location opening in Charlottesville, VA. The second location, Charley’s Lynchburg, opened its doors on September 24, 1980, at River Ridge Mall. In 2001, Charley’s introduced catering , offering full-service off-site hosting for all events, including business meetings, anniversaries, weddings, and birthdays. The catering menus feature both Charley’s signature favorites and a selection of innovative new entrees. Today, Charley’s LYH operates independently, owned by Rob and MJ Pearson.

After several years of living in Lynchburg, we finally made it to Charley’s for lunch on a Sunday afternoon.
As soon as I walked in, I had to use the restroom—and I was very glad to find it clean. That immediately gave me a good first impression. I strongly believe restaurants should prioritize cleanliness, including tables, floors, and restrooms. No matter how good the food is, it won’t matter if the place isn’t clean.
Our server (I wish I remembered her name) was very nice, attentive, and friendly. Great service always adds to a positive dining experience. Honestly, I would have given the restaurant 3½ stars if not for her—she truly made a difference.
I ordered the prime rib with a salad and Spanish rice. The prime rib didn’t look very impressive, but it tasted good and was cooked exactly as I ordered. Unfortunately, the Spanish rice tasted like it came from a box rather than being made from scratch, which made me regret that choice. The salad was standard but generous—no complaints there.
My husband ordered the prime rib sandwich with fries. He was very impressed with the fries; they were well-seasoned and fried properly, not bland at all. He enjoyed the sandwich, though the edges of one half were burnt. It was still edible, and the server made it right by offering us a free dessert, which we truly appreciated and did not expect. A very nice gesture.
Our son-in-law ordered a burger and enjoyed it. It was a generously sized beef patty on a large bun, cooked to order and very filling. According to him, the taste and quality were above average.
Because of the cleanliness and the friendly, attentive service, we would definitely consider going back.

Nice, family owned restaurant. We had wanted a good salad, and we found several here! We were very happy we drove a few miles off campus to find this great place. Service was wonderful, and we felt right at home. The meals were large, and we left happy. I would recommend the drive for a great restaurant!

The food was good, I had got the burger and it was Delicious. My server Victoria was so attentive, funny, and nice. She got all out order right and gave great recommendations. The atmosphere was very calm and the views were nice. The ice cream brownie dessert was good. Their no picture of my burger because it was gone before I take a picture. I would come here again.

Attended a wedding reception party here and staff was top notch and awesome to work with and service was amazing! BUT please take the ribeye off the menu for events like this. Every plate was left almost untouched who ordered it. Under seasoned and the toughest meat I’ve ever tried to eat. Those that ordered the salmon and chicken loved it.

Charley’s is the “Cheers” of Lynchburg Virginia. Where everybody knows your name. Friendly staff and relaxing atmosphere. A great space to hold parties of all kinds. The private back room area holds up to 60 guests seated and 100ish for standing cocktail parties. I’ve held baby showers, birthday parties for adults and children. All such wonderful memories. They offer a great variety of food choices, so all guests are satisfied. They serve the best Fajitas and cold chicken salad I’ve ever tasted *I highly recommend. Charley’s has been privately owned and LOVINGLY run by the Pearson Family for over 30 years. If you haven’t been or are visiting our area, you won’t want to miss stopping at Charley’s. Easily located off the highway, with hassle free traffic and plenty of parking.

We went for my boyfriend’s birthday. It was only 5 of us and it wasn’t busy in my mind. But I am only seeing things from one point of view. The service was friendly and the staff seemed really to be working hard. It just took a really really long time to get our food. We met at 6:15 and I would say by 6:20 we were at our table probably a little before. I had to be somewhere by 7:30. I almost did not grt to eat and I was a little late to where I needed to be. However, the food was absolutely delicious. I had the 3 cheese quiche and a bowl of cream of broccoli soup. Absolutely amazing. The staff were friendly and the service was good. Just slow. It would not stop me from coming back or recommending them. Highly enjoyed the food

The older gentleman who was our server, was excellent and hard working. The place seems like it is catering to an older population. The food was overpriced and not great quality. It also needs a good cleaning. Appetizer plate was dirty, ketchup bottle had food on it and surroundings needed to be cleaned. We got there at 1pm for lunch, maybe there was a rush before we got there.

Food was wonderful. Our server was great. It was a little slow because there weren’t many servers working and there were a lot of tables. It was the day after Christmas to be fair. Seemed to be a lot of locals here! We will definitely go again when we are in the area.
