This October, Iowa City’s iconic diner The Hamburg Inn No. 2 will reopen after a brief closure earlier this year. Generations of Iowa City have come to The Burg for bottomless cups of coffee, hand cut tenderloin sandwiches, burgers cooked on the griddle, plates of fries, presidential breakfasts, and the legendary pie shakes. The next chapter of that nearly 90-year history will begin this fall.
Decades-old, memorabilia-filled haunt serving up hearty American classics from morning to night.

The place looks great, but the food leaves a lot to be desired. Although, I think if you stay away from the burgers you might be okay. The burgers are only about 1/4 of an inch thick and come very well done, to the point of be burnt crispy around the edges. The friend I went with had a burger so salty she couldn’t finish it.
This used to be my go to place years ago, but sadly, no more.

A classic diner style restaurant that has been semi updated but still keeps its classic charm. Delicious shakes that they put an entire slice of pie into, so if you’re full from your meal I would recommend sharing. A fun stop!

I loved the vibe of this place. The french fries were sooo good! I ordered the pork tenderloin sandwich and it was flavorless. If you like the pork tenderloin sandwiches at the Iowa State Fair, this one looks similar but is not nearly as good. That said, I could tell I just chose poorly. This place is busy and well-known and if I am ever in town again, I’ll definitely go here and order something else. One thing I would like to note is that I was with an elderly person who needs a walker. Instead of seating us at an empty table that had a clear path to the door, we were sat in the back and it was a bit of a gauntlet maneuvering through the crowded, tight space.

Was visiting Iowa City and told that Hamburg Inn was a must-stop. So glad I did. I had the French toast with eggs and bacon on the side. I am very picky when it comes to my French toast and this was absolutely delicious. The eggs tasted farm fresh and well seasoned.
Also, our server Amelia was phenomenal! So kind and attentive. She made the experience that much better.

The place is as good as it ever was. It had probably been two decades since I had been there, and certainly the first time since the ownership change and remodel. They managed to keep all of the charm in the update. Friendly staff, fantastic food, and still very reasonable prices

Food was amazing. Great service. Fresh cut hashbrowns were fantastic and the reuben omelet was very enjoyable. My Granddaughter loves the fresh squeezed orange juice and pancakes. Thank you to the staff and ownership for preserving a historic part of Iowa City.

Great food! They revamped their menu and decor a while back, and we’ve been here for every Mother’s and Father’s Day since! The automosphere is a bit crowded and there are wait times if you come for Sunday brunch, but the wait is well worth it! Lots of kid-friendly food options (isn’t most breakfast?) and brunch options for adults! We especially enjoy their infamous pie shakes to share at the end of our meal. Would highly recommend!

Saw the reviews and wanted to stop for a bite. Staff was friendly from the time we walked through the door. It’s a small place, but has a cool nostalgic appeal to it. It’s not a huge menu as some mentioned, but not supposed to be. Service was fast and food was pretty good.
Only thing was when ordering a burger, I was asked with egg or bacon. I said name of burger again thinking I was mis-heard, and was asked about egg/bacon again, so thought maybe it came with it after all. Then asked if I wanted fries, onion rings or another choice, so I chose onion rings. Friend had a side salad (it was only lettuce). When bill came ($27+) it seemed high for a $3 salad/ $11.xx burger/$3 soda. Got to looking and bacon was extra $3 and guessing onion rings was another $3 or more as well? No receipt given or offered.
Guess maybe waitress should have mentioned if things were an extra charge, instead of asking a customer like it was an included choice, especially if they’ve never been there before.
Was a different experience at a cool little place, but not sure I would stop again for the price.☹️

If you follow politics you’ll love this place. It shows its rich history with politicians all the way back to Jimmy Carter. As for the food, we got the breakfast burrito and a strawberry rhubarb pie shake. The burrito was a solid breakfast burrito, may not have been the biggest or best tasting ever but it fills you up and tastes good. The hash browns were nice and crispy. The pie shake was delicious, if you are going to get someone make sure it’s a pie shake from here. It’s like pie a la mode but pre-mixed.

Went to Hamburg inn for brunch on a Sunday. We joined the yelp waitlist and it was about ~20-25 minutes for a table for 4 (not bad!)
I got the California omelet, but did not care for it. However, the hashbrowns that I got with it were nice and crispy. My friend got the French toast— I wish I got that instead.
Atmosphere was the nicest part of the restaurant. Service was unremarkable. I most likely will not return
