For the appetizer, I had shrimp and crab. Its was pretty mediocre. The main course I went for was the surf and turf. The lobster was okay but the steak was dry even though it was medium rare. I was asked about the side so I got the asparagus. They charge extra if you want a side with any of your meals… I ended up with basic ice cream for desert. Overall, the services and atmosphere was amazing but the food was just okay. Not worth the extensive price tag. Total after tax and before tip was $113 for 2 shrimp, a half cup of crab with lettuce, a lobster tail, a good amount of asparagus, a 6oz filet and 2 scoops of ice cream.

Disappointing experience for the price — ambience and service fell flat

My wife and I chose Rod’s Steakhouse in Morristown to celebrate our 6-month anniversary, expecting a higher-end, polished dining experience. Unfortunately, for a $300+ night out, it just didn’t deliver.

From the start, things felt a little off. Valet was technically there, but the attendant was sitting inside the restaurant, so we ended up parking ourselves. Not the end of the world, but not what you expect from a place trying to present itself as upscale and premium.

When we walked in, it appeared there was some very brief confusion finding our reservation. We were seated fairly quickly, but again, it didn’t feel smooth or confident. The hostess kept searching for a table almost as if one wasnt put aside, at one point another hostess asked “oh do they need a table for two” After sitting down, menus were handed out and a girl came by to pour tap water. Then our waiter arrived—and this is where the experience really started to slide.

The waiter seemed completely uninterested. No welcome, no acknowledgment that we were celebrating anything, no reading of specials, no attempt at engagement or personality. It honestly felt like we were an inconvenience. We also felt rushed: we were given maybe five minutes between ordering drinks (a whiskey sour for me and a margarita for my wife) and being asked to place our food order. For a steakhouse at this price point, that pacing felt abrupt and impersonal.

One thing that stood out was the constant presence of managers walking around checking on tables. On one hand, it’s good to see management actively involved. On the other hand, it felt like every 5-10 minutes another manager was walking around looking at the tables.

For appetizers, we ordered the Blue Point oysters, which were genuinely excellent—fresh, cold, briny, and clean-tasting. Easily the highlight of the night and probably the one thing I’d confidently recommend.
My wife had the pear salad, which she enjoyed and found well-balanced.
I ordered the seafood bisque, which ended up being lobster bisque with a single fried crab ball dropped in. It tasted fine, but the description felt misleading and underwhelming for what was presented.

For our entrées, I ordered the NY sirloin with a lobster tail. The steak was cooked beautifully from a technical standpoint, but it was extremely bland and noticeably underseasoned. The lobster tail was also on the tougher side, which seems to be a recurring complaint based on other reviews.

My wife ordered the surf and turf, and to be fair, her petite filet mignon was very good—cooked perfectly, well-seasoned, and had a nice buttery flavor. She says her lobster was good but nothing memorable.

We shared asparagus and scalloped potatoes, both of which were solid and enjoyable, though nothing memorable.

The final nail in the coffin, unfortunately, was the ambience. The noise level was absolutely unreal. Right next to the restaurant is the main bar, and playoff football was going on. The yelling, screaming, and crowd noise bled straight into the dining room and completely ruined any sense of intimacy or upscale atmosphere. For an anniversary dinner, it felt chaotic rather than celebratory.

Overall, the experience just didn’t align with the price or expectations. Between the rushed and indifferent service, the hovering managers, inconsistent food, and a completely compromised ambience, it didn’t feel special in any way.

We likely won’t be returning. Rod’s might work better as a loud steak-and-drinks spot, but if you’re looking for a refined, relaxed, or romantic dining experience—especially for a celebration—it falls short.

The burrata appetizer was superb. Shrimp cocktail was just a little bit tough. Prime rib was very good. Just a few bites of tough pieces. Filet mignon was pretty tender, but just a little bitter with a charred taste. Lobster tail was only three stars. A little disappointing since it was quite tough and a bit hard to separate from the shell. Also, I believe that the drawn butter was actually margarine, which does not taste nearly as good as butter. Restaurants of this caliber should serve drawn butter. The cheesecake was fantastic. Fyi, we went on a Thursday evening, and the dress was quite casual. There were several people in jeans. No need to get dressed up unless it’s for a special occasion. Ambiance was a little bit louder than I expected in such an expensive restaurant. And this place is extremely expensive. Our bill, for 2, was in the vicinity of $250. We had appetizers and dessert, but no alcohol.

Unique beautiful ancient environment. I like the second floor.
Need to request to use olive oil and no butter or vegetable oils. The manager made it right for me finally.
I like the Chilean sea bass. Rib veal chop. Sautéed onions. The cooked pear salad is unique and tastes good

It was a good special occasion restaurant. Staff was attentive. Food was good. Wasn’t mind blowing and I did feel like there was a lot of effort to be exclusive and upscale but was trying a little bit too hard. The result was good but not mind blowing

Great food! The BLT salad and escargot were fantastic! The steak was cooked perfectly but they don’t use any spices. Once we added salt and pepper it was great! Service was great as well!!

It’s rare to say the words “good value” and “steakhouse” in the same sentence, but in this case you can safely do so. Rod’s cuts of steaks and entrees are just that. I took my wife here for our anniversary dinner and sitting in the “train car” did not disappoint. The steaks we had were flavorful and temperatures were close to what was asked for- if not a bit under temp.

So why 3 stars? Because on this early Saturday evening (6pm) service was very very slow and just not attentive enough for the second half of our meal. We waited for 20 minutes from the time our dinner was done until we could order dessert. And after dessert it took a mind numbing 35 mins to get the check and get out of the restaurant.

Would I go again? I would since 1 visit is…well..just 1 visit!

We are at Red Dog but it came up as Rods.

It was good. The wings were good. The potato skins were delicious! I wanted the ribs and they took them off the menu. I can’t say the food I ordered was a good enough replacement, but nonetheless very good. The server was terrific.

I was very disappointed in my very recent experience. I called a week ahead to arrange a table for a special occasion. The person I spoke to was extremely accommodating and we agreed upon the table and celebratory presentation. When my party and I arrived, we TRIED to have a drink at the bar but waited about 20 minuted before a bartender asked us what we would like, even though the bar was not particularly busy. Once we finished our drinks, we tried to close our bill but were unable to get the bartenders attention. I asked the hostess if we would be able to transfer our bar bill to the table and was initially told that would not be a problem. As my party and I told the hostess we were ready to be seated, the hostess then informed us that we would not be able to transfer our bar tab and that our table was no longer ready. We then tried to close our tab at the bar but no one would help us for about 15 minutes. We were then seated at a table that I specifically requested that we would not be seated at. The food was good and the table service was great but overall I was disappointed. This is not the Rod’s that I remembered. The restaurants in the area have set a high bar for service and food in the area and this DID NOT meet those levels for the price. I would not recommend. (I did try calling to express to the manager and was left on hold for 15 minutes when I finally hung up)

Very nice place. Although the bread they gave us was a bit disappointing start the food knocked it out of the ballpark. Love it. The service was amazing and the quality of the food will have your pallets going crazy. Enjoy.
