A local and a pair of NYCers optimistic and generally bright eyed for amazing food experiences. We unfortunately did not enjoy this spot as we had hoped and wanted to share our first experience.

The shrimp took effort to peel as it was mushy and overcooked. Disappointing to find that almost every shrimp was not deveined completely. Flavor was buttery and oily.

Our mistake was not clarifying the cut of meat they were charging $15 for a steak plate. It looked and tasted like cheap cuts of beef, certainly needed more A1 sauce. When it’s seasoned good. it shouldn’t need extra sauce.

Service wasn’t inviting as the cashier appeared inpatient and nonchalant for any questions.

Best time to go to Kahuku is early – places sell out and think in terms of freshness.

Probably some of the worst shrimp I’ve ever eaten. Whenever I visit my sis in Hawaii, we usually go to Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck. But she mentioned that the quality has gone down over the years, so I didn’t mind trying something different. I saw that the Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck had a lot of good reviews, and she had never tried it either so we decided to give it a shot. We got there at just before 12:30 on a Sunday and there was a small line, but it moved relatively quickly. I ordered a few plates for us to share (4 adults + 2 kids). We had:

-Garlic Shrimp – this was sooo oily. The rice soaked up all of the oil and pretty much became unedible. The shrimp itself tasted like it had been dead for days because the texture was mushy. This goes for all of the shrimp that we had
-Tempura Shrimp – this was not tempura. Tempura is a batter, and this was panko breaded
-Mahi – this was actually tempura even though the menu said nothing about it being fried. Had I known it was fried, I wouldn’t have gotten it. It was dry and bland. The honey mustard dressing (?) it came with definitely helped a bit though
-Hot Squid & Shrimp – the squid was a little bit chewy but it was the best item out of everything we ordered. But even then, it wasn’t very good

Guess we are heading back to Giovanni’s next time – unless anyone has any good shrimp truck suggestions for me!

This is the best meal I had in Oahu – maybe even ever from anywhere! I randomly ordered it my first day in north shore and i was SHOCKED by how amazing it is!! I ordered the garlic shrimp / mahi combo. cannot emphasize how flavorful and soft the garlic shrimp is and the mahi is amazing too.

the next day i went to try giovanni’s as they share a lot and i was curious about the famous truck. well let me just tell u I took a bite of it before going over to kahuku shrimp again because it’s what i deserve

These were the best coconut shrimp I’ve ever had. The coconut was perfectly crunchy and the flavor was delicious. The service was friendly, and there are many other delicious options for seafood lovers. Highly recommended!

Service was good, friendly people, and nice spot to look around and has a lot of other food trucks. Food was so so. I got the shrimp and squid. Flavor was ok, more of a butter sauce or flavor than anything else. Texture was soft not best to me. Appearance was ok. This one wasn’t worth the hour drive to try it. I much prefer Giovanni’s but the other shrimp truck on the other end of the parking lot where this one is looked really good. People said it’s very garlicky and super good flavor. Appearance wise it looked and spelled delicious!

Do Not order their Garlic Shrimp. It’s Nasty!! Has a weird garlic butter paste. The shrimp was not firm but mushy. Spend a little and go to Giovanni’s. Giovanni’s shirmp is the best overall.

Pretty bad, shrimp are no where near fresh. Tourist trap, but a pale or lobster skinned family’s best take of what a shrimp truck used to be.

One of my fave places to go for shrimp and steak but yesterday’s experience was just meh, and I’m barely on that side of the island. Flavor is there and was good but as I read the most newest reviews, it is exactly what I experienced yesterday. The shrimp was overcooked and hard to peel. Their steak wasn’t thoroughly cut to slices, it was slices all attached together so was hard for poke one with my fork without grabbing a bunch plus this time there was more fat than anything. The thing that made me sick was the steak sauce and butter sauce all over my plate plus my rice was soaked. I think I’ma take a break from here for awhile til all that gets fixed.

Good location but expensive. Size of the empanada was 33% smaller than most places. The chimichurri didn’t have the consistency of real chimichurri.

Not like what I remembered, it was meh, would not recommend. Not worth the drive to the north shore. I really don’t mind peeling shrimp but this shrimp was so hard to peel.
