Hilo Bay Cafe started in 2003 by a small group of dedicated food lovers. For 10 years, the 70-seat restaurant flourished against odds in a small central Hilo strip mall location. From the start, it was well loved by locals and visitors alike, serving seasonal and organic food and wines with a fun and comfortable come as you are attitude. Living up to the aspirations of its name, Hilo Bay Cafe moved to a bigger, brighter location on the shores of beautiful Hilo Bay in October 2013. Here, familiar faces and new fans mingle. Diners enjoy contemporary, locally inspired dishes, artisan sushi, and they still love the wine, but the craft beer and cocktails now fly out the door into the hands of happy customers sitting on the lanai.

Best place we ate on the Big Island. The restaurant looks new and modern. We needed a place to cool down and relax from a day of hiking and exploring and we found the perfect place. My favorite dish was the mushroom pot pie. The shrimp yakisoba noodles was a bit much and might be more popular for locals because it’s huge.

Really wonderful experience from our greeting by Aaron at the door to the service at the table by Cayenne. The food, “house” by the glass wine selections were top notch. My husband went for the French onion short ribs & I went for the Hawaiian poke with a medium spice and the crispy salmon roll with a lemon aoli. Yum! We will be thinking about the flavors of this meal and the excellent service for years to come.

The view of the bay from the outside seating is priceless. The service was good. The decor is upscale. The food was flavorful. I can only image the night views from the restaurant spectacular. The views and location are worth the price.

The food was cold, the catch of the day was mahi-mahi I ordered it along a side of stirfry vegetables. It came on a small 5” x 3“ plate. The presentation was bad and fish was not good. The risotto was under cooked, definitely not experience we expected. We came here a few years ago and was amazing, but this time the visit was definitely not good at all. Does not live up to its price either. Was under whelming.

We arrived around 5pm with no reservation but were sat quickly. We shared the ribeye with the au gratin and the short ribs with mushrooms and noodles. The ribeye was perfect and the au gratin was delicious, but the short ribs were the chef’s kiss! So yummy with locally sources noodles which were fun and on top of the short ribs there were sauteed onions and so much cheese on top, I loved it. We also got a hot chocolate to share which was good, but the mug was so hot we burnt our mouths trying to drink it. Over all, very enjoyable- great food, good portions and reasonably priced, some locally sources ingredients, friendly service and very nice view of the bay. Just a side note that the online menu does not appear to be updated to what was available at the restaurant.

Wish I knew about this restaurant sooner. I’ve eaten all around Hilo and this is certainly one of the very best places I’ve enjoyed. Starting with the hostess who was friendly and polite, our server Cayenne promptly arrived and she patiently detailed the mouthwatering selections on the menu. I see why she loves her work because literally everything was perfect. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was exceptional and the view from the balcony was spectacular. The portions were large, the appetizers were awesome, even the deserts were outstanding.
I rarely give such a high recommendation, but this place is exceptional.
Best to make reservations due to the popularity. Be prepared to climb the stairs to the second floor, or there’s an elevator in the back.

Been here 5 times now and have had decent experiences. However, tonight’s wasn’t one of them. The two entrees, that we get every time we come, were about half the portion size as normal. Taste was comparable but food significantly less. Normally I’d let it slide but for the amount of money paid, and time spent waiting, I’m not happy. Not sure if there are new cooks or if they’ve decided to start giving less but it was not worth it. Just trying to be honest.
