Keep your money and go someplace that’s CLEAN AND HAS GOOD FOOD!!
Wondering if they keep the lights down low so you don’t know what you’re eating???
This place! GAG! 1st time here after many years of hearing people rave about the food.
We ordered filet mignon and prime rib but didn’t bring our hacksaws!!
But first the salad bar… totally mediocre and that’s being generous.
The waiter wasn’t cut out to work with the public. No personality at all.
When our dinner came out my steak was supposed to be cooked medium. It was more on the rare side and looked like the END of the filet… I specifically asked the waiter NOT TO PUT IT BACK ON THE GRILL…. to start fresh. He brought it back butterflied and crispy. Nasty, fatty and then overcooked. I told him he didn’t listen and there was no way I was eating that
The prime rib was bland, tough and more fat than meat. I’ve never had prime rib that you couldn’t cut with a fork!
So, a 100.00 meal, 16oz prime rib and a filet was fed to my dogs as treats when we got home.
They did take off my steak but then charged me a fee for the potato and salad? LoL
Speaking of the potato… it was the only thing edible there. Who could mess up a baked potato though?
And the bread shown on the plate?? Omgosh it was so hard and stale we couldn’t even bite into it. Gross.
My thoughts on this place is that it’s been there so long that the owners don’t recognize how awful their food is and the patrons are regulars who don’t know that there are other REALLY GREAT choices in the area that are truly full of grest food.
This place is stuck in a time warp from 40 years ago. The lighting, seating, floors, walls, bathrooms… yuck! A girl was making cups of water 4 feet from the womens bathroom door! The inside of the bathroom was disgusting and dirty with dust in the corners of every place I looked.
The health dept. needs to make another trip there. I saw the rating of 98 as we were leaving. Ugh.
I think the health dept. was generous with that score.
Maybe take another look???
Will never go back here and DON’T recommend that anyone else visit this nasty, nasty place.
In closing it reminded me a lot of the Hereford Barn in Charlotte that finally closed down after decades when their food got to the point of the WoodShed.
Posted pics of the filet, prime rib, bread and the check.

Tonight was my first time at this restaurant, after hearing so many people say how wonderful it is and always seeing the parking lot full on my way home from work on Friday night. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why that is though. They have a very limited menu, there’s hardly anything on it. We ordered fried pickles first and those were greasy and bland. No kind of seasoning at all on them. I make better fried pickles at home in my air fryer. I was appreciative of the salad bar in general, because you don’t really see those a whole lot anymore. I do see a lot of reviews about how sparse it is, but that didn’t bother me, as I’m picky when it comes to my salads and they basically had what I needed. I really knew there was a problem when I got my chicken tenders though. I worked at a restaurant that sold frozen tenders, so I immediately knew they weren’t fresh. But at least the ones where I worked had SOME flavor. These could’ve been made from cardboard. And they weren’t even very hot. They got cold in like 5 minutes. My baked potato was overcooked, but I powered through it as I wasn’t able to get the tenders down, even with sauce. My son ordered lemon pepper chicken breast with no lemon pepper to speak of, although I will say his chicken was probably the best out of all of our entrees. It wasn’t dry and it was pretty tender, just void of flavor. But he solved that with some sauce. The front staff was really friendly though and Brittany, or server, was great. This review isn’t to dunk on them, they have no control of the food that gets served. I just think that for the prices, they should have more variety and more flavor to add to the items. I know they tend to draw an older crowd, so perhaps that’s why they keep their food bland, to cater to the more sensitive stomachs that frequent there, I really don’t know. I just know that I was very disappointed.

This gem despite the bashers on here is really a great place to get great steaks, salmon, great salads and I haven’t tried there chicken yet. There sweet potatoes are always spot on. The ladies serving you are always wanting to please you if you have something not right tell them they will make it right. Since post Covid after every restaraunt was hit hard this place still has some of the best waitresses around. Never had to wait very long because we go early. They have always checked on us frequently. And If they run out of items you probably needed to have gone earlier. Every special restaraunt will occasionally run out of items. Also if you have a 15 person group you know for sure you will have to add extra wait time before being seated anywhere.
. Just saying. We will keep going back. Great place for us.
Thank you Woodshed for the many years of great service.

This place is a hidden gem and fair to say my favorite restaurant! I live in another state so I try to eat here anytime I travel to the area. The food is always great and served with true southern hospitality. They have an awesome salad bar that is always fresh and they make a baked sweet potato like no other. The decor and furniture is extremely dated which adds to the experience. Tonight I ordered the salmon and sweet potato along with the salad bar. My server Brittany was beyond friendly and provided great service and engage with friendly conversation. If you’re looking for great food and an amazing dining experience….. this is your place!

I’ve always heard good things, none of them are true. The booths have ripped seats. The service was fine, but I had an empty drink twice once due to the ridiculous amount of salt of the fries. I was able to BLOW salt off them. Conversely the steak seemingly had no salt, pepper, sear, nothing. Salad bar was a joke. If you went to your grand parents retirement home and got served this, you’d deeply consider moving them out. Don’t waste your time, or money, if you have a nostalgic memory, don’t ruin it.

The Woodshed USED to be my absolute favorite place to go. Now not so much. Me and my Now husband have been coming here for about 2 years now. We have brough my parents and my in laws here several times and it has always been a wonderful experience
However that changed,
Me and my husband were getting married the day after our visit. I called a total of 4 times in a 3 week period leading up to the date. We wanted to have our rehearsal dinner at our fav dining spot. When I finally reached someone to speak with I was trying to make a reservation for 30 people. She proceeded to tell me that they don’t take reservations and to call the night of.
The night of my wedding rehearsal I called and We waited 2 hours which didn’t bother me I understood. once we were seated this is where things started to go down hill. We had 3 servers 2 of which were WONDERFUL. However the 3rd one was NOT
My father in law was served a NY strip and he ordered a ribeye. when he told the server she tried to argue with him and then took his plate and had a very nasty attitude about it.
Then she brought it back (SAME STEAK) and said that the cook said it was a Ribeye. My father in law knows his steaks. so she begun to argue with him some more. When he got upset and told her to forget it she asked for the plate back and said she would bring him a new steak only AFTER he got upset and told her to forget it. He didn’t get to eat with the rest of us AND TOOK IT TO GO.
After we got the checks I went to go have a chat about the incident with the wonderful lady up at the front. When I explained the whole ordeal I also told her I tried to make a reservation for my PARTY OF 30 and she stated they SHOULD have taken the reservation for any party over the size of 10… So needless to say. I LOVED The Woodshed but what was supposed to be a happy night the day before the happiest days of my life. It was ruined by a rude server and not getting taken care right from the start with a reservation!

This is a case of trying to relive a fond memory gone bad. The Wood Shed used to be a favorite special event restaurant for my wife and in-laws. I turned 60 and told my daughters that I wanted to go to the Wood Shed to celebrate. We showed up with about 20 people at 6pm. My daughter called a day or two ahead of time to give them a heads up but was told they don’t take reservations. I understand that, no big deal. We didn’t have to wait long, maybe 20 minutes. Being a Saturday night I was surprised because this place used to have long wait times. Anyway we were sat all together which was great. The waitresses were nice and friendly enough. The service was fine. Unfortunately the food was not. The salad bar was the best part and that’s because it’s supposed to be cold. The prime rib I ordered was cool, not even warm. Maybe room temperature. My daughter’s food and her family’s was the same way. I felt embarrassed to have asked my friends and family to drive from Charlotte to Stanley for this. It has been years since I had been there and I can tell you I won’t probably be back. The restaurant wasn’t busy. There were plenty of open tables so it wasn’t like they were busy. I gave them the score I did because I had fond memories or it would have been lower. I’m sorry but this is my opinion.

Recent Visit
The experience was disappointing. Despite empty tables, there was a long wait to be seated. While the salad bar is still a highlight, the beef tips were inconsistent in size, leading to some being rock-hard and others undercooked. To add to the frustration, my order was incorrect, and the steaks we received weren’t cooked to our specifications.
Second Visit
I’ve had good experiences in the past, but this visit fell short. My ribeye steak was overcooked, and I waited an unreasonable amount of time for the server to check on us—so long that I had to approach the front myself for help. By the time my replacement steak arrived, everyone else at the table had already finished their meals. While the food was delicious, the poor service overshadowed the experience. Also, the beef tips are now listed at market price, which is unclear and frustrating.
First Visit
This place used to be my favorite steakhouse. The long wait for dinner—often an hour or more—was worth it for the incredible food and service. The filet tips were tender and flavorful, and the salad bar was always fresh and stocked. The servers were attentive and friendly, making every visit a joy. I couldn’t wait to try the prime rib next time.

At one time, The Woodshed used to be an excellent dining establishment. I would drive from Matthews to go there. However, the experience is now lackluster and subpar, to a point where I can no longer justify going there even for nostalgia’s sake. The restaurant has kept removing items off of an already sparse salad bar while steadily increasing prices. Offerings used to include watermelon rind pickles and cottage cheese, for example. The iceberg lettuce served clearly comes right out of a bag that you could buy from any basic supermarket. Now you have to pay for their famous Tomato and Onion sandwich, whereas it used to be complimentary. The quality of the meats has definitely gone down. They are very pedestrian for the price you will be paying. Their prime rib and ribeye’s used to be some of the best around. A Charlotte Observer food critic used to rave about the Woodshed’s prime rib. While I want to see independently owned restaurants succeed, and while it pains me to say this, I would recommend going elsewhere unless you just want to get a taste of nostalgia. However, bring your plastic card with you. One other thing–the restaurant is crying for updates. Its 70’s/early 80’s decor is dated and in ill repair, and the restrooms leave much to be desired. They need to be gutted and redone. Again, I hate to be critical about a place I used to thoroughly enjoy. However, I must be honest, in hopes that the ship can be righted.
