I had heard a lot of good things about Anapoorna, so I went in with high expectations — especially since I’d been craving the dishes I’ve missed from India. Unfortunately, the experience turned out to be a big disappointment. The food looked colorful and appealing at first, but the taste didn’t match the presentation at all. It wasn’t just bland; it had an unpleasant, distasteful flavor, almost as if it had been left in a cooler overnight and simply reheated before being served.
I ordered several items hoping to enjoy a variety of dishes, but I ended up regretting it. The entire meal was so off-putting that it left a sickly feeling in the back of my throat for the rest of the day. Overall, it was a horrible experience, especially after expecting so much more based on what I’d heard.
I truly wish the food had lived up to the reputation, but sadly, it fell far short of that.

One of our friends highly recommended Annapurna on Devon Street for their live pani puri. She always says that whenever she passes by, she has to stop there for it. Since we came from Wisconsin and don’t get such options there, we were excited to try it.
We arrived at 8:28 PM while the closing time is 9:00 PM. Initially we were told the live counter was already cleaned and they could only serve us at the table. After requesting, they agreed to serve live pani puri.
Unfortunately, the experience went downhill because of the attitude of the staff member at the counter (Salma, I believe). Instead of welcoming us, she questioned why we came so late and told us customers shouldn’t come around 8:30 PM because they start closing earlier. This was surprising since the restaurant still had more than 30 minutes before closing.
She also asked if we could just have puri and water because they were out of masala and making it again would take effort. When we said we could wait, she eventually served cold ragda. It felt like she was more focused on finishing her work than providing basic customer service. There was no effort to make the experience pleasant.
I didn’t want to create an awkward moment for my friend by raising this directly with the owner, but the staff’s attitude was very disappointing. The food might be good, but customer service definitely needs improvement. Being questioned about why we came at 8:30 PM when closing time is 9 PM is simply not acceptable.

The only reason I am NOT giving 5 stars in because the very 1st time I visited this place (on a Monday) the lady at the front counter was very rude and showed a lot of attitude and every single item that I wanted to order she kept saying “we don’t have that” I literally asked for 4 different items and each one she would say “no we don’t have”. So my 1st experience was very negative and I ended up not eating anything.
BUT! I decided to give it another try a different day (on a Thursday) and luckily for me, they did have all the options available on the menu!. The food was absolutely delicious! 10/10 and they have plenty of seating available. This place is 100% vegetarian. That lady still had an attitude but I was with my Indian husband so he ordered for me and it wasn’t such a negative experience as the first time.

I would have given a negative rating if that was available.
Firstly, the food quality was very bad. We ordered Chole Bhature and the gravy was colored water with a lot of oil floating on top. As soon as I ate it, I started coughing.
We also ordered Batata Vada and they put Masala Dosa filling in it. Such a short cut!
The Jalebi was full of food coloring and
unhealthy sugar coating. I think the Food Inspector should check the quality of their food.
Secondly, their receptionist was not at all welcoming. We were there for an hour and did not see her smile even once. She was busy doing her own thing.
I am never going there again.
If anyone from India is visiting for the first time and wants to taste authentic Indian food, do not go to this place..

As a longtime local customer, I’ve been coming to this restaurant for many years. Unfortunately, over the past year I’ve noticed a consistent decline in both the quality and taste of the food. I almost always order the same dish, and the changes in flavor have been noticeable. While I’m not sure whether this is due to changes in ingredients or kitchen staff, a staple menu item should be consistent in taste.
Additionally, the recent price increases feel difficult to justify given the current quality, like $9.95 for a plate of papdi chaat seems steep. It’s disappointing to say, but I’m now inclined to explore other restaurants in the area offering the same cuisine

I had a very disappointing experience mainly because of Salma’s behavior and attitude. Instead of focusing on helping us or fixing the issue, she kept asking who made the complaint rather than actually serving us or addressing the problem.
What was even more upsetting was overhearing Salma telling the staff not to worry about the food and to just give it to us so we could leave. That kind of attitude toward customers is extremely unprofessional and unacceptable.
On top of that, my pregnant wife was served cold food. We expected basic care and professionalism, but Salma showed a complete lack of respect and concern for customers. This experience left a very bad impression.

I just ordered a Pav Bhaji. They charged me $14 for it and look at the quantity they gave me. The box was very tiny as if they gave me a salad in a container and not pav bhaji. I mean if you are charging me this much amount then why the quantity wasn’t there. On top of that look at the tax what they are charging. There is not a single restaurant in the whole Illinois who charges you this kind of tax what Annapurna charged me. I have the pic attached of the receipt. They charged me a Takeout/phone 2.50% – $0.30 and also another charge was Credit Card Surcharge (3.00%) $0.37 and on top of that they charged me tax which was $1.34. I mean if you charging me with all this then atleast give me a better quantity first.
I would never give this place even 1 star rating if google allows me to but I have to select a star so I selected 1 star.
