Reviews
We were shown to a round table in the middle, sort of under the stairs. It’s was ok but did not feel “cosy”.
Ok we chose a Starter each and and mains from the Winter menu. We could not work out what was available on the “Meal Deal Locals Menu 2-course £20.95” that was so confusing.
We selected a “Terre D’Or Sav Blanc” wine at £28.50 + 12.5% Service
The Prawn Cocktail was nicely presented and tasty, other Starters were well received except the Parsnip Soup arrived Cold!! Only discovered after delivery and had to be sent back to the kitchen. It returned so hot as to be silly! Ruined really but was consumed once it cooled down.
Later the Mains were served. The Shepherds Pie was delicious but delivered so so hot it was a safety hazard! The Coq au Vin was commented on as excellent. One had the Woodland Pork Collar which looked and tasted lovely. (To our surprise this dish turned out to be in the Locals menu.)
No veg with Mains so we added. Roasted Root Veg & a Creamed Mash.
Unbelievably the Root Veg was served up Cold!! It had to be taken back to the Kitchen by us and reported we had been served cold food TWICE now!
After 1.5 hours we decided to pay and depart. We declined a “Pudding” and Coffee as we had run out of time.
The deduction of £13.00 for the Cold Soup & Cold Veg was appreciated but we added Service back. The Manager was so nice we felt that was only fair.
The food was excellent: fresh, seasonal British produce with plenty of options for fish, grill, and brilliant vegetarian/vegan choices too. Everything was beautifully cooked and full of flavour – proper feel-good dining.
What made the visit even better was chatting with the young chef (sorry, can’t remember his name!) who came out to say hello. Such a friendly, passionate guy – clearly loves what he does and it shows in the plates coming out of the kitchen.
Yesterday I treated a friend who’s moving out of the UK. We had the rabbit, beef shin, trout, a bunch of sides, and the poached pear to finish off. Sicilian red to boost the colours of our food. Plates were perfectly presented, and served professionally and cordially.
I am moving out of St Albans after a few years, but for sure I’ll come back to eat here.
Thanks guys for taking food so seriously.
Food was good, tasty and fresh, staff very helpful and atmosphere warm and friendly. Ideal for our event.
It was also very helpful that I could speak to the booking services over the phone and not just an automated system as some restaurants have these days.
I would highly recommend them for cosy meal or for a party event.
The food itself was particularly well presented and tasted very fresh. I would say elements of the dishes were slightly under seasoned for my palette; or missing a little something to accompany the meals to take them to another level. Nevertheless, a really great meal and no genuine complaints.
Service on a weeknight evening was excellent and I found the staff to be attentive and knowledgeable.
Overall, I would recommend this restaurant and see myself returning in the near future.
