Overall: Just okay.

Here’s what we ordered.
Dozen Oysters (3/5): Fresh with a decent selection, but about half weren’t fully shucked. The mignonette was plain sherry vinegar—no shallots or seasoning.

Baked Oysters (4/5): Solid and enjoyable.

Mixed Green Salad (3/5): Good flavor, but included several slices of hard, waxy cheese rind. When we mentioned it, it was dismissed as normal, which was disappointing.

Whole Grilled Fish (4.5/5): Excellent and the clear standout. If there’s one reason to return, this would be it. Might add more veggies to improve the portion

Banana Pudding tiramisu (3.5/5) – okay. More Banana pudding with a little tiny piece of coffee soaked ladyfingers

Service (3/5): Interactions felt rushed, possibly due to understaffing.
Atmosphere (3/5): Despite being only about one-third full, all the guests were seated close together in the back, making it uncomfortably loud.

I was in Richmond for 36 hours, so I had one night to experience the local food scene, which I heard good things about. I chose Rappahannock for my only dinner in town.

Kate was my server and she was so friendly and attentive. I asked her a few questions about the menu and she answered me with honesty, which I appreciated.

I decided to try two of each of the local oysters, the Smoked Fish Dip, and the Little Gem Wedge. The oysters were really delicious; fresh and cold served with both the mignonette and cocktail sauce. The Rappahannock River Oysters were exceptionally tasty. The fish dip followed and that was great too; they definitely give you a healthy portion of it as well. The Little Gem Wedge was really nice with the lettuce being very fresh. After all that, Kate made a convincing argument to try the blueberry shortcake; also fantastic! The hand whipped cream and blueberries were delicious and I had to force myself not to finish it as I was already stuffed to the gills!

The restaurant itself is casual and fairly loud, but it’s good for groups and individuals (has a large bar) and seems it would be kid-friendly.

Everything about this restaurant could be considered mid to straight disappointing. Started with the hostess trying to sit us right by the restrooms after passing several empty tables in a half empty restaurant. We asked to move tables (did not want to enjoy the sound of flushing toilets while we ate) and then were left waiting for a waitress after being given 2 glasses of tap water. This gave us the chance to observe the underwhelming and outdated decor that was completely absent of warmth, feeling more like a brewery taproom from 2012. We weren’t drinking tonight but were told they were sold out of their only NA option, Athletic. Settled on San Pellegrino after seeing it brought to another table; was not recommended a sparkling option by the server. She was content with us sitting with our half drunk glasses of warm water. The food could have made up for the ambiance and service, but alas, it expectantly felt short as well. Tiny oysters for the price, scallops zapped of all flavor and moistness, and a mushroom risotto that could best be described as crunchy (didn’t know you could cook it quite like that). Anyways wouldn’t recommend unless you want a story about the time you ate at the worst well-rated restaurant in Richmond.

We sat at the bar for dinner around 6:30 on a Saturday evening. The food and drinks were delicious, but the service wasn’t great. We spent a lot of time waiting. I understand that bartenders are busy, but maybe they could staff a third person behind the bar.

I had a nice time at Rappahannock

The ceviche was absolutely delicious—fresh and full of flavor.
The gumbo was tasty but a bit small in portion size.

The restaurant has a family-friendly atmosphere with a lot of kids, making it a lively and casual place to dine.

Overall, a nice spot for fresh seafood and a relaxed meal.

There’s a reason this brand keeps expanding with new locations – it hits every single time. Coming from a mediocre meal a few blocks away, my friends and I stopped at the bar to save the night and end on a high note. The great oysters and stellar cocktails helped, but it was the banging service at the bar that made the night 10x better than when we walked in the door. Sit at the bar, talk with Andy, down some oysters, and enjoy the company you came with.

I had a good experience at Rappahannock Restaurant.

We kinda had to get the Rappahannock oysters. They had a very good flavor. The taste had a nice little bit of sweetness to them. The cocktail sauce was a perfect complement to them as well.

I had the grilled octopus. It is easy to poorly prepare octopus, but they absolutely knocked it out of the park. If there is a better octopus dish in 1,000 miles, I would be very surprised. It had the perfect amount of char, the perfect seasoning, and the perfect level of tenderness and chewiness. Seriously it was amazing.

We had the s’mores tart dessert. The brownie wasn’t great, but the chocolate sauce had a delightful saltiness to it. I also found the marshmallow to really bring it home for me.

The price was higher than what you will pay up and down Broad, but in my opinion it is well worth it. You are paying for high quality seafood.

I wish the wait staff were a little more attentive, but I think the vibe they go for is more upscale where they let you have a conversation as opposed to bugging you every five minutes.

I would recommend the Rappahannock Restaurant and return.

Super fresh oysters. I love raw oysters so order them wherever they’re offered. They provided horseradish upon request because I prefer the clean taste and then might add a little lemon and horseradish.

We also ordered the oysters with caviar. They were so tasty I forgot to take a picture of them.

Best paella we’ve ever had, and we’ve been to Spain. We enjoyed the crispy rice in particular.

Delicious and fresh whole fish. It was red snapper when we visited. It fell off the bones, and the flavor was superb.

Great cocktails (Negroni and dirty martini).

Excellent service. Even tho I didn’t specify outdoor seating in my reservation, they still accommodated it on such a lovely day. Host, waitress, and bartender were all fantastic.

Walking distance from Dominion Energy Center (we went to a show at the theater beforehand).

Definitely a repeat

Great food and a large selection of alcohol. A little on the pricey side, but I don’t mind paying more for quality.
