My dad wanted some ginger oil with the soy sauce chicken, but the waitress said they don’t provide that with this dish. I thought that was strange because it’s just a small cup of sauce that we wanted to enjoy with the chicken(if they said they just genuinely doesn’t have it we will understand). Or If they had told us there would be an extra charge, we wouldn’t have minded paying. But she simply said no, and judging us which made the atmosphere tense.
Instead, they brought out a lot of the different sauce specifically for the chicken. but is a lot(a bowl), so we couldn’t finish the sauce with the chicken.
When we were paying, the waitress noticed we didn’t finish the sauce and started mumbling in Cantonese under her breath, which really shocks us. She probably thought we didn’t understand Cantonese. After that, we just wanted to pay and leave. The tip included on the receipt was calculated after tax, and we paid more than 15%, even though the service wasn’t very good. She only checked on us once and never refilled our teapot. Despite that and despite her speaking badly about us we still wanted to be polite and leave a reasonable tip.
However, as we were about to leave, she asked for an additional tip. My dad had already calculated and given her enough because our family usually tips based on the amount before tax. The recommended tip amounts at the bottom of the receipt were calculated after tax, and she pointed to those. My dad didn’t want to argue, so we gave her more.
We definitely will not be coming back again. I know the restaurant will continue to get new customers, and maybe that’s why they treat people this way because losing one customer doesn’t really affect their revenue.
The molten egg yolk buns and fried turnip cake were actually unbeatable
For me, there’s something special about starting the day with a hearty Asian breakfast, and this spot is one of the few places in the city—let alone Chinatown—that offers a full-service experience. I like to come here once in a while, especially on holidays, and even as early as 8am, this place could get busy.
Like many Chinatown staples, the menu here is extensive: huge selection of small plates, from dim sum and dumplings to rice rolls and more. Each visit, I try to get something new, and so far, the fried turnip cake and deep fried spareribs were my favorites. Other classics like the Xiao Long Bao and Duck Noodle Soup were solid and on par with the popular spots nearby.
However, the bakery section has been a bit of a miss. While the egg tarts are great, the other pastries and cakes were subpar. The cakes have an unbalanced ratio of bread to cream, and the tarts sometimes taste like they’ve been sitting for a day or two.
Nevertheless, Great Taste will always be one of my go-to spots in Chinatown. There’s something irreplaceable about a hearty Asian breakfast, and this place delivers that in spades.
Price very reasonable comparing in Boston, and open too early for you to jump the day off.
Staff are freindly in Chinese way, which i got very comfort too, and surely come back when i have a chance to visit Boston again.
However, we had a very disappointing experience when it came time to pay. We paid our bill and left a cash tip, as we usually do. A staff member came over to count the cash and told us the tip wasn’t enough, pointing out that the “suggested tip is at least 15%.”
My friend added two more dollars, which we believe brought the tip to 15%—and we calculated it before tax, which is the standard tipping practice. Despite that, the staff insisted we did not tip enough. I told her that the tip amount is suggested, not mandatory.
What was most upsetting was her attitude. She was rude and dismissive, even though one of our dishes had been forgotten during the meal, which we didn’t complain about because we had to leave early.
I’ve always been happy to tip fairly for good service, but this experience left a bad impression. I’m sorry to say I won’t be returning, and I would not recommend this place to my friends after how we were treated
