We are a small craft bakery and stone milling operation with a cafe in the Church Hill neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia. Our goal is to make the highest quality breads and pastries in a sustainable way, towards a new food culture. We work directly with farmers in our region to source everything from the wheat that makes up our breads to the vegetables & fruits in our pastries. We also aim to serve as a gathering place for community, to provide both joy & sustenance.
Local grains are house ground & baked in wood ovens to make bread & pastry in an airy, rustic space.

I really enjoyed the chocolate croissant and what is really cool is they use their chocolate paste in their mocha espressos!
All wood fired to perfection. In the back of their service area you can see the wood fired oven!
The cherry pistachio pastry is a classic must-try; the combination of flavors is simply divine. However, you really can’t go wrong with any of their daily offerings. Each pastry is crafted with care and creativity, ensuring that every bite is a delightful experience.

If you haven’t visited yet, do yourself a favor and stop by. You’ll quickly understand why I consider Sub Rosa Bakery the best in Richmond. Treat yourself—you won’t regret it!
I’ve visited multiple times and consistently been delighted. I strongly suggest the cherry tomato and cheese, the zucchini and cheese, the strawberry and almond, or just the croissants are a delight.
Kind and efficient staff, and excellent coffee options, too.
As for the bread, we got a day-old standard loaf for half off and it was also great. It has a wonderful sour note to it and a crispy crust. The only thing is that the hydration level might be a tad too high because the inside was still a little wet so it was the tiniest bit gummy when slicing even though it was obviously fully cooled since it’s day-old, but a little toasting helped that.
Will definitely return!
