We ordered the Chimichanga Platter and the 3 Enchilada plate. Very good, heart food with a lot of flavor. We got seated quickly, and our server was very friendly as well.
Atmosphere was friendly
Once we placed our order, the food came out in a reasonable time and everything tasted fine, with the exception that my daughter’s food was a little cold. Up to that point, the experience was average but acceptable. The problem began when it was time to pay.
I handed my debit card to the waitress, and she walked away. After several minutes, I realized she hadn’t returned. I started packing up my leftovers, and I noticed she was nowhere to be seen — not on the floor, not near the other tables she was serving. After more than five minutes with no sign of her (and my debit card still gone), another waiter noticed I was looking around and asked if I needed help. I explained that our waitress had taken my card and hadn’t come back.
That waiter went into the kitchen area, and about a minute later, our waitress finally came out. I asked her why she had taken my debit card into the kitchen, since all the point-of-sale (POS) systems are located out front — not in the kitchen. Her response was that she “had to take care of another table.”
I calmly told her that if she was busy, she should not have taken my debit card until she was ready to process it. It’s common sense that a customer’s payment card shouldn’t leave the immediate service area or go into a part of the restaurant with no payment terminals. Instead of understanding my concern, she became defensive and told me it “wasn’t a big deal.”
At that point, I asked to speak with a manager. The waitress tried to take my debit card again, saying she would get the manager, but I stopped her and told her no — that she was not taking my card anywhere else. I could clearly see her speaking with the manager before he came over to my table.
When I explained everything to the manager, I expected some level of understanding or at least an apology. Instead, he defended the waitress’s behavior and dismissed my concerns. He said she was just helping another table, as if that excused taking a customer’s debit card into a non-secure area for several minutes.
My main issue is not that I believe the waitress stole my information, but that she created an unnecessary and unprofessional risk by taking my card somewhere it didn’t belong — and that the manager failed to treat it seriously. After the experience, I confirmed with another employee that there are no POS systems in the kitchen, which made me even more uneasy.
Because I have no idea what happened with my card while it was out of sight, I immediately locked my card through my bank’s app. When I called my bank, they told me that incidents involving servers copying debit card information have been increasing and are more difficult to dispute than credit card charges.
I want to make it clear that I am not accusing anyone of theft, but this was handled in a completely unprofessional manner. At the very least, the manager should have acknowledged how inappropriate and concerning it is for a customer’s payment card to be taken into a non-secure area.
The restaurant was not busy at the time — there were multiple staff members sitting at a table near the front — so there was absolutely no reason for this situation to have happened or to be handled so poorly.
It’s disappointing, because this could have been addressed easily with understanding and accountability. Instead, the experience left me frustrated and uneasy. Unfortunately, based on how this was handled, I will not be returning and cannot recommend this restaurant to others.
