Johnny Tequila’s – Roselle, New Jersey
While parked @ a local receiver delivering a load , I was on my way to mamas Italian and made a b line , Succumbing to the luring art and decorative style of this building .

I don’t even know where to begin , this place blew me away. I’ve been a fan of authentic Mexican food for a long time, and Johnny Tequila’s easily ranks among the best I’ve ever had. The atmosphere is lively and inviting, with great music playing in the background, a full bar, comfortable seating, and an energy that makes you want to stay awhile.

What really stood out to me was how unique they are, not your typical sit-down Mexican restaurant that automatically serves chips and salsa. They have their own style, and that’s exactly what sets them apart.

I ordered the Birria Tacos (three per order, served with rice, beans, and a side salad), and let me tell you , these were hands down some of the best tacos I’ve ever had. Perfectly crispy, packed with flavor, and top off with overflowing beef.

I’ve only eaten Mexican food in New Jersey twice, including this stop, and that other place couldn’t even compare to here, and as someone from Florida just passing through, I didn’t expect to stumble across such a hidden gem.

Special shoutout to Daniella, who was incredibly sweet and went above and beyond with her service. She was warm, welcoming, and made the whole experience even better.

I’m so glad I made the last-second decision to stop in and celebrate National Taco Day here ,it couldn’t have been a better choice. I’ll definitely be coming back the next time I’m in town.

5/5, highly recommend.

Love this place to hang out. Sundays is happy hour all day and I believe during the week they also have happy for a certain time slot. I love the tostones de ropa vieja, it is always ON POINT and taste the exact same every time so they got the recipe on LOCK. The guacamole is one of the best I have ever had in a restaurant/ food place. The chicharon de pollo is really good as well. The maduros are to die for! Drinks are very good as well and it’s a great place to hang out if you don’t mind it being a little on the noisy side. The server Emily is amazing and super sweet as well.

Sorry for the long story, but this is how my end of year experience went. So, I seen an ad on IG stating a reservation was required to visit this establishment on New Years Eve without a cover charge. From the Ad, the food looked delicious and the reviews were convincing. I don’t normally go anywhere. I’m a homebody that works in healthcare. My partner decided to make the reservation since we didn’t want to do anything extravagant for NYE, plus the hype about the birrias made us curious. We arrived at 8:30pm and was greeted nicely by the hostess. She sat us at a small table where we ordered a drink and some chips; guacamole and salsa. By the time we got the order is was 8:45pm. We advised the hostess that we will order food in about 20 minutes or so, we just wanted to enjoy the atmosphere for a few. Shortly after 9pm a gentlemen whom I assume is the manager approaches us and asks if we are staying for “the party”. We explain we came for a vibe and food , he proceeds to tell us that we have to pay $45 per person to stay because there’s a party and only ppl that reserved ahead are allowed to be there and we need to make a decision because it starts at 9:30pm. He then says “while ya figure it out, I’ll check back in, in a moment”: my partner and I were confused and tell the hostess why weren’t provided this information when we walked in. She said “I forgot”. I explained that I had a reservation only because of the IG ad and wasn’t planning on staying for a ball drop. The man comes back over and the hostess explains the reservation issue, and he states well then ya can pay $15 each since you’re going to order food. I’m still very upset at this point, and tell my partner let’s order the food to go then. It’s now 9:20pm, we ordered the food…. We waited and waited and waited, at 9:50 we check back in about the food, the hostess comes out of the kitchen looking flustered like she wanted to cry. She explains that the kitchen staff said they closed the kitchen for orders at 9pm due to the party. The gentlemen whom I assume was the manager says, “they can stick around and take food from the buffet if they want. “ I’ve never encountered such unprofessional customer service. This episode sealed the deal for me for 2025. 10pm on New Year’s Eve, no plans and all restaurants closed. At least the hostess waived the bill for the drinks, guacamole and chips. Thanks Johnny Tequilas for providing the most terrible experience just hours before the new yr. You definitely need to do better. A bit of advice, make sure your staff knows what is going on for big events. You guys did poorly and dropped the ball on this one. I won’t ever return based off of this experience.

Jersey may be a long way from Mexico, but here in the Garden State, there are plenty of authentic Mexican eateries. It is one of the most popular and beloved cuisines in the world, with a rich history and a diverse range of flavors and ingredients.

As much as we love the classic dishes from tacos and tamales to enchiladas and agua fresca, there is so much more to discover.

Tucked away in a strip mall on Raritan Road in Roselle and formerly known as Villa Tequila Bar, a few of my colleagues decided on lunch at Johnny Tequila’s.

Upon entering, for some of us as first-timers to this two-level restaurant that could seat about 100, we were greeted by the staff inside a lively, modern vibe with music pumping throughout that patrons have always flocked to. We sat on a high table by the window surrounded by the caricatures of famous deceased artists such as Bob Marley, Amy Winehouse, and Tupac, to name a few.

Their menu features nuevo Latino cuisine with roots in Central and South America, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic, with vegan options.

For starters, we decided to share the Guacamole with Fresh House Made Tortilla Chips. As the main meal, we opted for the Shrimp Burrito, Chicharrones De Pollo, and Tostones De Ropa Vieja. We washed them down with Strawberry Margarita, Coco Loco, and Red Sangria.

The meal was tastefully delicious, made from the freshest and most flavorful ingredients. The portion was a healthy size. The price was reasonable. The service was friendly and attentive; our server was Jennifer.

From start to finish, we had a wonderful time, which ended with a complimentary shot of guava, which we can recommend.
