My mother has been talking about the tomato pie from O’Scugnizzo’s for at least the last 30 years. My grandfather owned a children’s shoe shop and lived in new Hartford. This was one of the very few highlights in her early culinary experiences.
And it delivered. Super nice people behind the counter as well. It’s just off the Thruway. Easy to get to plenty of parking do yourself a favor and skip the awful throughway food.

Been coming here for over 30 years and am impressed that the style of pie and friendly service has not changed. Clean, spacious, family-style space if you’re eating in, spotless bathrooms, and friendly, humorous banter at the front counter, which is something I’m happy to say never changes at the historic spots in Utica. I think the manager, “Red” and his coworker Tommy both deserve a raise for providing such quality customer service! Do yourself a favor…get your pie extra crispy!

This restaurant has been around since 1914, and you can really feel the history when you walk in. The atmosphere is amazing, with old photos and images on the walls that give the place a unique character. We tried their special pizza made with mozzarella, mushrooms, peppers, tomato, onion, and garlic, and added anchovies on half — it was really nice. The pizza itself is very unique, especially the sauce. It has a slightly runny texture and a rich, tasty flavor. It feels like they add it at the later stage of baking, maybe after the pizza is half or three-quarters baked, which gives it a totally distinctive taste. The dough was also amazing, different from any I have had before. Both I and my son noticed right away that it was unique and delicious pizza different from any other pizza we have tried. If you are passing through town, you definitely have to try it.

We really liked the local “sauce on top” style pizza they serve here. Was cheap too! Utica has so many unique foods and this is worth checking out.

If you’re in town, this is a must-visit — not just for the history (second oldest pizzeria in the nation!) but for the food itself. Their signature tray-style pizza is unlike anything else: a perfect, airy-yet-crispy crust topped with rich tomato sauce and a generous sprinkle of cheese. You can taste the tradition in every bite.
Service was warm and welcoming, and family run and the old-school atmosphere makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time in the best way possible. The kind of place where you just know locals have been coming for generations.
Can’t wait to come back for another tray!

I have been a loyal customer of this establishment for over three decades. The quality of the cuisine has remained consistently excellent throughout this period.

Excellent pizza — decent prices for how high quality the pizzas are. If you’re looking for New York style pizza, this isn’t it. However, these pizzas were delicious and seemed quite gourmet. We got the pepperoni and the garlic/mozzarella. For two smalls that were actually quite large, we paid $22.78 after tax.

Okay, the pizza may have not been a five in my books but the experience was definitely worth it. The great-great-granddaughter was there and she gave me a very much history of this icon driving from Toronto driving by. I had to go try it. Lots of history. Second oldest pizzeria in the US of a very, very interesting articles. Artifacts and the whole story how they started. Thanks again. I didn’t catch your name. Great experience

Wow, their upside down pizza is seriously good. Locals know this, but I’m no local. Still, so glad I ordered a pie for pickup, no issues when I arrived and I was in pizza heaven a minute later. Don’t hesitate

First off…the staff was NOT friendly! We ordered a 3 topping large pizza and 20 wings. The pizza was made incorrectly, so they remade it. When we finally got our food after 30 minutes…the pizza was overcooked (burnt on the outside crust)…but was otherwise edible. Not bad, but still overcooked by about 5 minutes! SCORE…C/C-. The wings were, by far, the worst part of the meal! They were WAY overcooked!!! The “fatter” of the wings we could eat, but most of them we threw in the garbage!! We certainly did NOT order them crispy!! The photo doesn’t really show just how overcooked (aka burnt) these wings were!! SCORE…D/D-. The owner wasn’t even apologetic about it!! Obviously he doesn’t care…like most business owners!! Yet they keep raising their prices anyway! $65!!! . Terrible meal!! I’ll stick to Joe’s Pizza and Trio’s Pizza for much better “upside down” pizza!!
