I ordered his lobster and shrimp pasta, and I was able to watch Chef Jimmy prepare it live in the restaurant. It was amazing.
Snails taste great too,
Every waiter is friendly and proactive.
Classy setting with great atmosphere and live music. We will be back again.
First of all this is a cool spot. Maybe not the perfect spot for a 19-year-old’s birthday dinner. There was a large number of The areas older clientele gathered around the bar and sitting at the tables enjoying happy hour. We did arrive at 4:45 in the afternoon. There was a din of conversation and a guitarist was setting up to do some entertainment. So it’s sort of a bar scene. I get that, In fact I normally would enjoy that it just wasn’t what I expected.
Now I didn’t say anything about this because there was probably nothing to be done but the guitarist was playing music from possibly an mp3 player or what have you through his PA system. He also had a full array of guitar effects, stomp boxes, if you’re a guitarist like I am you know what I’m talking about. The problem is he had those hooked up to the same system and I believe that was where the incessant buzzing was coming from. Interestingly near the speaker it was more or less drowned out by the rest of the sound but where we were sitting all the way in the back of the room it was pretty annoying. I imagine most of the clientele couldn’t hear it. But my 19-year-old son could hear it very well. Someone in charge of the place should notice things like this and let the musician know.
The real reason I’m leaving this review was the food. My son ordered it fettuccine carbonara. It was not what we expected. It was more of a light cream sauce if I had to describe it. But there was very little flavor and it didn’t resemble any carbonara I’ve ever seen. Maybe it should be billed as a creamy carbonara? I looked at some other reviews here that also ordered that and had the same criticism.
I ordered the Mama’s seafood pasta. It had shrimp, clams, and muscles over linguine in a very watery flavorless sauce. There was nothing wrong with the seafood itself other than it may as well have been steamed with tap water because the flavor was very plain.
My wife got a 4 oz fillet with bearnaise sauce because that was the only way it was featured on the menu. She doesn’t really like bearnaise sauce but she figured the steak would be okay without it. My son and I both tried a bite of it as well. Something just wasn’t right. I understand filet mignon is not the most flavorful of cuts but this steak tasted “off”.
So our waiter asked how things were and normally I wouldn’t have said anything but at this point, and at this price point… So I told him what the problems with the food were. Well, that got us a visit from the owner who I fully expect to reply to this review. I appreciate his attentiveness. He definitely seems to care and seems to be trying. He said my dish probably got some pasta water in the sauce. He agreed when he looked at it that it shouldn’t be that watery. That’s a reasonable explanation. Okay. When I told him about my son’s carbonara I even showed him a picture from Google of what we thought we were ordering. He made a comment about the average age of his clientele. Implying that his dishes needed to be milder I suppose.
I didn’t come to an Italian restaurant with this price point to eat food you might get at an assisted living facility. I know that sounds harsh but really.
So I was honest with the owner and he made excuses. But he said “hey let me buy you dessert on the house”. Okay okay that’s not a major reparation but it was something. I figured the waiter would come by with a dessert menu and we could pick something we liked. Nope. Way too long later he rolled out three orders of soggy tiramisu. Wow.
Chef, You have work to do in your kitchen. Your staff needs supervision or your menu needs an overhaul. The restaurant has a lot of potential, 3 stars just for that. Don’t squander it.
We were made aware of the specialty sharing menu, available for earlier seatings. On this visit we ordered from both early and normal menús. The Italian beef sandwich with French fries was an option from the early bird menú. Along with a combination platter 2 course prixe fixe menu, Chef Jimmy’s Chicken Vesuvio, spaghetti with marinara.
There was possible confusion in the specialty menu options and ordering, an additional side of macaroni and cheese also arrived with the meals. From the main menu the option was Mamá’s Seafood linguini. During this dinner visit there was evening piano entertainment as a bonus, the lead singer of the 1970s band America.
We were aware of past live entertainment, but were never fortunate enough to have timing for the experience. Now that we’ve had the opportunity, to experience more of the variety of menu options. Some of the specialty earlier options also include sandwiches/ paninis, pizzas, classic pasta entrées, seafood, salmon, beef and chicken items.
On past visits I’ve tried gnocchi, and the carbonara. When Tuscany Nokomis, was formerly known as Mama Leone’s Italian Restaurant. A new owner, Jimmy Nadell, took over and has made menu changes since the change in ownership. With the change in ownership, came improvements, thus assuring well will return once again, hopefully to try the pizza. Thanks again for the wonderful experience and meals.
