I want to thank management and the PP team for doing right by their customers. I honestly appreciate that most of all and it’s what will keep me a customer for as long as the calzones stay amazing, no matter the cost. (pls see before and after pics)
I’ve been a Purgatory customer for
over 10 yrs because I love the calzones, even though they are sometimes inconsistent in size. Today’s calzone, however, left me beyond disappointed as it was more like a hot pocket! I don’t know if my order was understood or not, the guy taking orders was somewhat rude and didn’t give me a receipt. I ordered and really wanted extra pepperoni, mushrooms and pineapple….please see the following photo for what I actually got. I’m sorta sad because the price of the calzones has gone up so significantly from the time I first discovered them, and I happily pay no matter what if only I got what I ordered.
I’ve never spent so much money on a meal or been treated so hatefully with disdain then the way this kid treated me and my daughter, we were in shock but not surprised because a short girl that was the cashier for us last week was Also extremely hateful and dismissive. it was like pulling teeth communicating with her too. these employees clearly hate their job and have so much disdain for the customers even some kitchen guys would come out and give everyone dirty looks last time and by reading the reviews I see I’m not the only one getting treated like this. As far as I’m concerned the whole staff needs to be scrapped and new people that respect and value the customers and actually Acknowledge them when they come in need to be hired. We were regulars years ago and stopped coming in for the exact same reason and things seem worse then ever! Yesterday was a Saturday and Valentine’s Day and there was only one guy and last time there was a concert and there was only one person working the front and taking orders and serving, who’s the manager here?? They are doing a horrible job they obviously need to hire more people and they are setting the standard bar low for how customers should be treated because Owner/Manager your employees are a Reflection of You! This place seems abandoned by the owners and these little punk kids in charge of running the place know that they are unsupervised and running this place to the ground. Sure you may have customers but Not repeat customers because you treat them like trash. This place also lacks consistency, the food is never prepared the same, the quality is not there, also I ordered two 14 piece wings extra well done and they were are soggy/fatty/undercooked and overly drenched in buffalo sauce to the point thy weren’t even edible. I ordered a large buffalo bill and it was undercooked/pale too like it was made in a rush. I ordered a Vegan ziti pasta that was completely pale and undercooked. I ordered 2 large Cesar salads and was given 2 Real Cheese Cesar’s which we couldn’t eat because they were covered in real cheese. We ordered potatoes wedges and those were the only good thing!
I ordered a bunch of of extra sauces extra Cesar, extra buffalo, extra vegan ranch to dip my pizza, wings, wedges and for my salad and was given only 3 ranch and they were all regular ranch Not Vegan, I started to feel sick when on my drive home I ate wedges dipped in ranch, So we called the restaurant to ask if he gave us regular ranch or vegan and he said regular ranch and lied and said there was vegan ranch too, but that he’d refund the sauces. We drove 8 miles back to the restaurant and 8 miles home,so 16 extra miles to pick up the vegan ranch and all the other sauces he’d forgot, but we hadn’t opened up the two salad bags so at that time we didn’t know that we had been given real cheese salads and we found that out when we got home and called the restaurant again and he said he’d give us a refund on the salads which we never got back on our card. It was such a bad experience and it sucks because we enjoy the food when it’s done correctly as ordered but we are treated like our business isn’t welcomed here. I also feel like it’s racism and sexism going on here, seems like if you’re not a dark skinned Latino or male then you won’t be treated with respect here by the employees. I’m done with this place. I’ve had too many bad experiences here
The one thing I found frustrating is that there are no prices listed on the menu or on the fridge for the drinks, so you don’t really know what you’re paying until checkout. We ended up paying $50 for one 14” pizza and two Olipops, which felt very overpriced for lunch.
For those driving, there’s accessible street parking nearby, and it’s also close to a Metro stop, which is convenient.
The crust to their Detroit and Sicilian styles are really good and as far as myself, 2 slices were enough to satisfy me. Due to inflation and possibly the tariffs, you’ll pay quite a bit more. I think each slice averages the price of $7 each. I didn’t ask because I was hungry and it was a hot day in Boyle Heights during my visit. Plus it’s better than that corporate pizza stuff you see on TV.
