I first came to Il Solito Posto back in the mid-2000s, and it’s honestly one of the restaurants that helped define my love for good food and wine. Walking back in all these years later brought back a lot of memories.

This was the place where I first tried a Rockford Basket Press, and where I had some of the best Italian food I’d experienced outside of Italy at the time. It opened my eyes to how powerful the combination of great produce, thoughtful cooking, and the right wine pairing can be.

What makes Il Solito Posto special is that it doesn’t try too hard – it just focuses on doing things properly. The atmosphere still carries that classic Melbourne charm, the food is comforting yet refined, and the wine list continues to be a highlight.

For me, this restaurant will always hold a special place. It’s not just a meal – it’s a reminder of where my food and wine journey really began.

A good solid Italian food experience. It doesn’t wow me these days but it’s always consistent. Nice seafood linguini, an OK affogato. Good if occasionally over brisk service (your two hour eating window always looms large here)

I would have rated here higher but there’s just some lacking details that slightly brought down Il Solito Posto.

The ‘School Prawns’ were quite delicious. Great seasoning with spiciness in it to cut some of the richness of the fry. This also paired well with the sauce that was light and had subtle acidity that complemented the prawns and the richness.

While I don’t have much complaints regarding the taste, other than perhaps making it slightly more aromatic, there is a lack of care for the customer. Sharp parts of the prawn like the rostrum and the telson weren’t removed, leading to unpleasant mouthfeel and eating experience. These spikes would cut the insides of the mouth and gums.

The ‘Linguine Seppia’ was absolutely outstanding and truly one of the best pastas I’ve had in my life. It truly showcases how important the quality of the ingredients are, especially in Italian cooking. The olive oil used was so fragrant and gave such a pleasant and subtle sweetness to the sauce.

The sauce itself was okay and gave nice tanginess to complement the seafood. This dish really emphasised freshness with its choice and quality in ingredients. The pasta was al dente as well without being too hard.

However, the calamari was likely untreated and unseasoned. It might have been prepared beforehand and just added in last minute because it did not manage to absorb any of the flavour from the sauce. It was quite disappointing because overall, this dish was amazing.

Can’t go wrong here, food tastes amazing and fresh. Nothing mind-blowing, but the beauty is in the simplicity that’s perfectly done. Service was great and atmosphere was so cozy and nice. Booked for a date and couldn’t fault them on anything. Highly recommend if you want a cozy, comfortable dinner date spot. Particularly loved the herb bread and rigatoni.

Visited twice in the same week, just because the pasta was too good. Good texture and full of flavour. The tiramisu was original, with moisture and coffee. Decent choice of wine and some good choice by the glass. Staff are very friendly too. Relatively easy to get a seat by one person but generally should require booking.

Love our experience here!! The staff were friendly even though it was as busy as ever. They gave really good recommendations based on what you’re looking for and didn’t oversell. We really enjoyed our food and time here! The recommendations were great, the seafood was fresh, and everything was just perfect.

Note kitchen opens at 5:30pm. Dined here for a pre-theatre dinner, servings are very generous for price point. I would have liked more flavour in the pasta. Overall, alright for a quick dinner and drink.

We had such a great time at Il Solito Pasto. The staff were friendly and made our event feel truly special. The warm, cosy ambiance added to the whole experience. Definitely worth a visit!

I’ll keep coming back. This was on my 4th visit here. If it were closer to work or home I would come here way more often.

I would say their food is in-between homemade grandmas food and fine dining. I leave here with my stomach and heart full, because the food is consistently good. If you like and appreciate Italian cuisine you can’t go wrong here
