That said, while the food was very good, I felt it was overpriced compared to other high-end restaurants we’ve experienced in Los Angeles, especially considering the overall service.
Unfortunately, the service is what really brought the experience down. It felt a bit snobby and inattentive. I normally don’t dwell on how I’m treated, but there was a noticeable shift in tone once my husband mentioned we live in Ontario (California, not Canada). After that, the interaction felt different—almost as if we were being viewed as second-class guests. It did make me wonder whether that, or even our phone number area code, played a role in us being seated right next to the bathrooms, despite informing the restaurant ahead of time that we were celebrating our anniversary. The seating itself was fine, but it was hard not to notice that there were much nicer tables available for what was supposed to be a special occasion.
What could have still ended as a pleasant evening was ultimately spoiled at the end. After we paid the bill, the waiter approached my husband and questioned whether he had made a mistake, since only a $10 tip showed on the electronic payment. We calmly explained that we had left cash on the table to cover the full tip and that the $10 was simply extra. He did apologize, but followed it with, “sometimes people make mistakes,” which felt unnecessary and awkward.
I remained polite, but honestly, something about the entire experience just didn’t sit right. I’ve had far better, warmer, and more professional experiences at restaurants that are equally—or even more—high-end. This could have been a memorable anniversary dinner, but the service ultimately overshadowed what should have been a lovely night.
The food lives up to the setting. The Mediterranean inspired menu is consistently excellent, with beautifully cooked meats, fresh seafood and dishes that feel rich and indulgent without being heavy. Everything I’ve had here has been well executed and reliable, which is exactly what you want in a place you’re bringing someone for a special night.
It’s the kind of restaurant that’s perfect for dates, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day or any night where you want the room and the food to do some of the work for you. A classic for a reason.
We started with the escargots, grilled octopus, and the mezze plate. Everything was really good, especially the octopus, which was tender and full of flavor. The mezze was perfect for sharing.
For the mains, we had the ribeye steak and the whole grilled branzino. Both were great, and the branzino stood out as super fresh and light.
We finished with the chocolate lava cake, and it was amazing, warm, rich, and easily the perfect ending to the meal.
Overall, delicious food and beautiful vibes. Definitely a spot I’d recommend for a date night or special occasion in LA.
Ambiance:
The setting was undeniably beautiful, with soft dim lights and natural tree branches creating a charming atmosphere. However, the tables were packed very close together, which made the space feel crowded rather than romantic or intimate. The music was loud—though enjoyable—but added to a rushed vibe.
Service:
Unfortunately, service was the weakest part of the evening. Our server asked for the entire order upfront—starters, mains, and dessert—and only returned once to drop off drinks. Even that simple order wasn’t correct: one of the drinks was wrong and had to be sent back. It was clear they wanted us to eat quickly and free up the table. When the check arrived with a mandatory 20% tip and a prompt for an additional tip, it explained why the server did the bare minimum: the gratuity was guaranteed. For a $400 dinner, we expected more attentive service.
Food:
Starters: Flavorful, with the duck confit being the standout dish.
Mains: The salmon was beautifully presented, tasty, and a generous portion.
Desserts: Earl Grey crème brûlée and coconut sorbet with berries were just okay—forgettable enough that we didn’t even take photos.
Overall:
While the setting was lovely and some dishes impressed, the rushed service and lack of warmth left us underwhelmed. Perhaps it was just the New Year’s chaos, but we don’t see ourselves returning soon.
We wanted to take a little risk and choose a place we had never been to before for our friend’s wedding day, and it turned out to be an amazing experience. Unfortunately, I didn’t catch our server’s name, but she was incredibly sweet, funny, and made the night even better.
We ordered the filet mignon, and honestly, it was some of the best-quality meat I’ve ever had—cooked to absolute perfection. Huge shoutout to the bartender as well; the drinks were excellent, and he definitely didn’t hold back on the alcohol.
I will definitely be coming back for a date night. The atmosphere is so romantic, and the combination of great food and outstanding service made the evening unforgettable.
The food was delicious, the drinks were perfectly crafted, and the entire vibe made the night unforgettable. It’s the kind of place where you can relax, enjoy great conversation with friends, and feel transported away from the busy city.
If you’re looking for a charming spot in Los Angeles with amazing ambiance, great food, and excellent cocktails, The Little Door is definitely worth visiting. ✨
The gnocchi was good but there was a very overpowering flavor of cheese. The salad was very average for the price you pay, mainly kept afloat only by the crunch on top and the dressing—both of which could have been plated on more generously. The crudo and French onion soup stood out a little more above the rest though. The crudo was very fresh and flavorful, and packed a nice punch of acidity. I will note, it did require a bit of balancing out particularly because of how acidic it was, but it was nonetheless a nice (refreshing) appetizer. And for the French onion soup, they brought justice to an all-time classic dish. Finally, our Cod dish—which was presented so beautifully and brought high expectations—had a lot of potential to be phenomenal. The sauce, the presentation, the purees, the green beans and the sear of the COD were all done exceptionally well. However, the issue lay in the Cod itself, which we both found to be quite fishy and difficult to enjoy as the fishiness overpowered all the other flavors on the plate.
Nonetheless, the dishes were still enjoyable on our special day. I should also note that the dessert—early grey creme brûlée—was one of the best creme brûlées I had. It is super flavorful and very unique/unheard of. My only complaint is that it was quite hot and not traditionally cold as one would expect a creme brûlée to be. Overall, the Little Door would for certain be a place I would come back to and try, especially given its uniquely romantic vibes.
