I love the people here and the food tastes good. But recent changes are definitely bringing the experience and value down. Sitting at the bar and not being able to order from there feels weird. Now they yell out names instead of giving numbers and bringing it. I ordered a chicken sandwich and added $3.95 for fries…the picture is what you get (I confirmed) for an extra $4! Come on guys.

Love this place and have been frequenting it for years. They were under construction for a bit recently and let me say – changes aren’t great.
They’ve made their ordering process convoluted and less easy to use. In the middle of the ordering stations/cashier is where you pick up your food order now. I’m sure that’s fun when they’re super busy.
Also, they stopped bringing the food to your table, so you either have to wait to have your name yelled (again – gotta be fun when the place is super busy, it gets pretty damn loud) or give them your number. If you have mobility issues or can’t stand around clogging the various stations while waiting for your name to be shouted – good luck.
These changes reek of a decision from on-high without really stress-testing the change or asking customers for feedback.

Changed to a full 5 stars. We come here at least twice a month and it’s so consistently good from the service to the food to the relaxed atmosphere.
Original review: Really quality comfort food (quality ingredients and thought), friendly staff. Nice location with options like chicken fingers, Angus burger, sweet potato tots, a stone pizza oven, and a bar if you’re looking for beer on tap in addition to their beer or seltzer selection.
Upstairs outside patio is small but cute. Food is brought to you, you bus your own dishes.
There are some take and bake options as well as quality breads, pastries, and neat gifts like candles, mugs, toys too if you’re looking for a quick stop off before home.

We have had to make several trips to OHSU (from Eugene) over the past few years. After discovering Elephants on Corbett, we always make time in our travel schedule to first eat lunch here. It’s simple, sophisticated and pleasant. The food is superb as is the service. I often have their veggie frittata, which is rich and delicious. They have a large selection of salads, sandwiches and many prepared foods, including a large assortment of home made soups. The croissants are wonderful and the cookies look divine, although I haven’t yet tried them. If only Eugene had Elephants! Then we wouldn’t have to wait weeks or months to be able to eat there. You’ll enjoy it immensely!

Elephants has always been solid in South Portland (which is a food desert)—a little pricey, but good. However, since the refresh, the portions have been irregular—and the quality is hit or miss. Three slices of lettuce on 2 out of 3 fish tacos is rough, 4.5 fries with my burger- yes I counted is offensive – a brown side Caesar salad isn’t just gross it was a waste of my extra $2. Being out of the Thanksgiving bowls the other day made me sad, since that was the reason I came that day. I was also made to feel guilty about taking the last cranberry brie grilled cheese because the woman behind me had been promised mine, only to be told she was out of luck because of me. Also, the Brie grilled cheese was made at the salad station which tasted great but a regular grilled cheese I had a week prior was made at the grill and was overcooked- the bread was as hard as a rock. 95% of the staff is incredible, but one cashier is miserable and acts like they hate working there. You’re asking yourself why I’m still going- I love elephants and they’ve always been top notch since I started going to the chain almost a decade ago so I’m giving them more of a chance to improve than I would most spots. I’ll still attempt a few more visits for them to improve before calling it quits especially like I said it’s a food desert. I hope they improve – either way I’ll be updating my score accordingly in a few weeks.
Update 12/17: changing from 3 to 1 Star- 4 visits with still inconsistent quality and portions and two visits where food is on the menu but not available mid-day on a weekday. Also one of the employees snapped at one of the servers when he asked about an item I was asking for that is on the menu but couldn’t be found in the hot bar.

Busy and frenetic. Walkup counter order only. They were out of most of their grill area food. Only two sandwiches were available to order. The sandwiches were good. Most of the clientele were grab and go. Some seated in the coffee bar area and some seating upstairs were there is more of a dining experience. We did love the options for experience, whether coffee house feel, salad bar area, deli mart, or walk up grill counter.

Been coming here for years, first name basis with many of the staff (they’re great, and not the reason for negative feedback!). New renovation means at least two touch points for hot food. No signage to communicate where to go first, and a complete break from old processes. I’m not scared of change, but if I have to go to one counter to get a ticket to take to another counter to pay, when both have a POS system and can take my money just as easily as the other counter I’m gonna get riled up.
Turns out, even the bartender can’t put a hot food order in even if you’re already siting there enjoying a beverage.
Customer experience = 0/5 as a result.
Even the staff acknowledge that they are frustrated they can’t give customers the experience they’re accustomed to (and frankly, even the old experience left much to be desired… lots of gaps were covered by staff that took initiative for regulars).
Elephants management needs a long sit down and think about their customer service model if they don’t want to lose customers and tarnish their reputation.
Average food and above average prices have historically been the expected at Elephants, and with this new system adding friction to the sales process I’m gonna be way more likely to sacrifice the convenience for a better experience, better prices, and better food elsewhere.

Cute little Cafe. I just bumped into this place while killing time. What a great find. Cool vibe, great atmosphere. I have a slice of pizza and a piece of banana bread. I needed neither, but wanted Both! Excellent Arugula pizza and, well, there nothing better than a good slice of banana bread. Friendly folks, good product displays, a steady flow of folks grabbing food or even a cocktail. Great spot to meet friends.

A friend and I recently ordered sandwiches to go, and the tuna melt was a big fat zero.
1) She asked for a single slice of cheese. The server handed us the sandwich saying “tuna melt with a single slice of cheese.” Got it home – no cheese at all.
2) Not only was there no cheese, but there was barely any tuna salad.
3) Unfortunately the sandwich was paid for (including a nice tip) before we got it home and discovered the error.
4) In my experience the cold sandwiches offer a better value than this. Very disappointing overall.

I’m pretty sad about the changes. We used to get breakfast here but when we tried today at 10 they said “no more breakfast?” Agree the ordering changes have added to the chaos and it’s a bummer they got rid of the number / bring to your table system. All of this combined will probably send me walking up to Jola instead now for breakfast. Too bad. 🙁
