Mitsuru is a neighborhood Japanese restaurant in the West Village. We offer a range of Japanese fare focused on sushi, hand rolls and heartier entrees alongside a big wine list of 500+ bottles. An omakase can be enjoyed at the 8-seat counter, where chef-owner Mitsuru Tamura presides nightly.

Had a wonderful experience here! The atmosphere has such a homey feeling that makes you want to stay. The staff was kind, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable. The sea bass tempura was by far my favorite dish, absolutely delicious. Finishing the meal with the buckwheat tea was exceptionally comforting. Highly recommend!

Fantastic omakase. The atmosphere feels like you are in someone’s home, very warm and inviting. Small well spaced tables and an 8 seat omakase bar. We did the omakase with wine flight. While definitely a pricier option, it was really incredible quality and many course (17 I think) plus dessert and fresh fruit. Overall, I would revisit!

We recently visited Mitsuru for dinner, and the experience was decidedly mixed. On the positive side, the food was very good overall, with the sushi being the clear standout. The quality of the fish was absolutely fantastic. We ordered the five-piece chef selection twice, and both times we were genuinely blown away by the exceptional quality and freshness of each piece.
We specifically came for the hand rolls, which have quite a reputation, but they left much to be desired. While they were nice enough, the portions were surprisingly small and didn’t live up to the anticipation that brought us there in the first place.
We also tried the charcoal grilled skewers that were on their special menu. The short rib Wagyu beef was delicious and cooked perfectly. However, the king mushroom skewer came out cold, not just room temperature but actually cold, which raised concerns about how long it had been sitting out or whether it was even fresh. We sent it back, and the replacement came out hot and was delicious as it should have been.
The service was another disappointment. It was inattentive at times, which isn’t what we expected given the price point we paid. For a restaurant at this level, we anticipated more attentive and polished service throughout the meal.
While the sushi alone makes Mitsuru worth considering, the inconsistencies in execution and service make it hard to give an unqualified recommendation at these prices.

Phenomenal experience. I came here for a birthday dinner with a friend. The Hakkaisan sparking sake was a dream. We got the chef’s choice 5 pieces – hamachi, snapper, yellowtail, king salmon, toro. Each was fresh and needed minimal soy sauce to enjoy the savoriness. We also got some hand rolls and the tofu appetizer, which was like a savory custard. For the hand rolls, the salmon skin roll had a smoked bacon flavor. The entire team was engaging and so knowledgeable about the dishes. I plan to come back!

Truly an excellent sushi experience. The freshness of the ingredients, the perfect temperature of the shari, and the subtle seasoning that bloomed at just the right moment were all impressive. It was a bit lively, so not the quietest setting, but we had the omakase dinner at the chef’s counter and were able to enjoy it at a relaxed pace. The service was also very kind and attentive. Looking forward to coming back for another special evening!

Absolutely delicious sushi (priced to match) with excellent service. We really enjoyed our meal at the chef’s counter. We’ve been to Yasuda before and this place compares well! Some of my favourite pieces were the sea perch, scallop, toro and uni.

The food was refined and fresh, you can really feel the care in each dish. The atmosphere is calm and intimate, perfect for a special dinner or a quiet night out. Service was attentive and kind without being overbearing. We’ll definitely be back!

Based on the reviews, we expected very good-tasting food, but everything turned out to be quite ordinary. I usually like Japanese restaurants, even though I don’t like seafood, I always order their special chicken and cucumber salad. Surprisingly, they didn’t have chicken, even though it was shown in the photos I checked before making the reservation.
Instead, they had chicken wings with a curry flavor. It felt more like an Indian restaurant, but not a good one, lower quality. I didn’t like it at all. My husband ordered a few sushi rolls; he liked them, but again, nothing special.
The only interesting part was the design of the restaurant, which was cozy, not really the vibe. Maybe the omakase experience would be very different.
