I used to love this restaurant and have been coming here for years, ordering the same dishes. Unfortunately, my most recent visit (today) was a complete disappointment. Every single dish we ordered was bad. The quality has dropped dramatically, and it tasted like they’ve cut corners on ingredients. Nothing tasted the way it used to. Whether this is new management or cost-cutting, it shows—and it’s unacceptable.
The worst part, however, was how they handled the check. When the server brought our bill—nearly $100 for three entrées, one appetizer, and two drinks—it immediately seemed off. We were not given an itemized receipt, just a total. After paying and adding a tip, I asked for the itemized receipt, and that’s when things got very suspicious.
The staff suddenly acted confused, started yelling to each other, and then a different server literally grabbed our closed check and disappeared. All the servers vanished, and I had to go behind the counter to track down our original server.
That’s when I learned there was an undisclosed 20% “service charge” already added to the bill. This charge was never disclosed verbally, not listed clearly on the receipt, and never explained when the check was presented. Because of this, we unknowingly tipped on top of an already-added 20%, paying an extra $32 in tip without realizing it.
When I asked the server to confirm whether the service charge was essentially a tip, he said “yes.” I told him that this absolutely needs to be disclosed to customers before payment, and his response was simply, “ok.”
This is not an accident—it’s methodical and misleading. Leaving out the itemized receipt appears to be a deliberate tactic so customers don’t see the added charge. It’s dishonest, unethical, and completely unacceptable.
Between the terrible food and the deceptive billing practices, this place has lost our trust entirely. We will never return, and this behavior should and will be reported to the BBB.
Ive been coming to this Joy Yee for years.bI dined with my boyfriend of 8 years last night. The food is always great, but the staff made that the last time I will be dining in.
Staff seemed less that interested in serving us. Multiple time while we were eating did one staff member come up to us to ask “Boxes? Should I take your plates?” and it was very obvious we weren’t done. This was the same staff member who followed me out to my car on other occasions to harass me for a bigger tip. We were in and out in 30 minutes, and when we were done with our plates, we were startled when he slammed our dishes loudly into a dish bin somewhere in the dining room
I used to love this place. The re-opening has been disappointing.

Great food and usually staff is great, but staff came out to my car to hassle me about leaving a tip. I usually tip in cash so I didn’t write a tip on the check, but after refusing to leave the side of my car my friend just gave him another $10 and he left us alone. Terrible behavior and most likely won’t be returning as this is not the first time this has happened to me or my family.
I actually went here to Joy Yee on accident. I thought I was going to, what I know now to be, Joy Yee Plus in Chicago Chinatown. I saw I was in the neighborhood of my own house haha. So I went to the wrong location (Naperville) ; glad I did.
Ordered 4 items:
1. Lemon grass chicken and garlic noodles. (Bursting with flavor and fresh taste).
2. Eel (My favorite absolutely)
3. Fried Garlic and jumbo shrimp fried rice!!! (Wow)
4. Szechuan green beans. (You have 3 different option tastes for your green beans).
My family and I loved this food.
The quality of ingredients comes out in the taste of the food, the presentation of the food, in each individual containers and the overall packaging of my meal to go. I made sure all was in tact and there when I got to the car, before driving off.
Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese and other Asian cuisines. A nice large menu for a taste of Asia.
I also order brown sugar boba, my favorite boba, but it was nothing to go back and get again. In addition, there were NO roaches in my boba, as i read in a few reviews also. That’s alright with me baby, I’ll stick the food here and leave my boba for Palgong Tea in Glenview and Tsaocca in Chinatown!!! 5 stars for now. Rather there is consistency in the future…we’ll see.
