Russ Restaurants – The Homemade Goodness People for over 85 years! J. Russel Bouws began operating his first restaurant in 1934 at the age of 21 in Holland, Michigan. Over the years he grew his restaurant, including franchises owned by Howard De Haan in the Kent County area between the 1960’s and 2000’s. Over time, Russ’ brother Gord and Russ’ sons John and Bryan joined him along the way. The family grew the business into 12 locations. The standards have always been to keep the cost low for the customer and to deliver a homemade meal. Currently, Bryan’s family is operating the 12 locations along with their wonderful staff! This 28th Street location opened in 1970.

Great energy, great gift shop and the Manager came around twice to check in on us. Very friendly but our lovely server was amazing and you can tell she was experienced with the menu. She did say she had been there 2 years and that makes a difference because she cared to stay so she wont be afraid to give suggestions.
At Russ’s, where the neon sign
Glows with a welcoming design,
A humble stop upon the way,
To brighten every passing day.
The air inside is warm and thick,
With scent of coffee, strong and quick,
And sizzling hashbrowns, golden-brown,
The finest fare in every town.
The booths are vinyl, soft and deep,
Where secrets sometimes fall asleep,
And laughter echoes, low and bright,
Beneath the soft and even light.
The menu board, a classic sight,
Presents a bounty, day and night.
From “Big Russ” burgers piled up high,
To pies that beckon to the eye—
With lemon meringue that stands so tall,
The sweetest treat to crown it all.
The staff moves with a practiced grace,
A friendly smile on every face.
They pour the refills, never tiring,
Their service warm and so inspiring.
It’s more than just a place to eat,
A local hub, a fond retreat.
Where families gather, old and new,
And comfort food is always true.
For simple goodness, tried and tested,
In every memory invested,
Russ’s remains, a beacon clear,
Dispelling doubt and banishing fear,
A hometown flavor, rich and pure,
A feeling that will long endure.
While in Grand Rapids I had to enjoy a breakfast stop, and I chose Russ’ Restaurant for that meal. Parking was a Plenty. Once inside I was amazed at how clean this place is!
The waitress Terri was exceptionally friendly and accommodating. We placed our order, and waited for about 20 minutes for our food order. Coffee was topped off more than once during the wait for food. Food came out and everything looked great. I had the Eggs Benedict and found the food to be delicious. Everyone in my party enjoyed their meals.
I would highly recommend you visit this establishment. I cannot imagine anyone would be unhappy.
Food: 5 Stars

Cleanliness: 5 Stars
I’m always a bit leery when someone describes their product as famous but in this case I think it was justified; these were one of the two best orders of onion rings I’ve ever had in my life. Hand cut, crisp, and deliciously battered, I’m looking forward to having them again.
Their carrot cake was incredible, moist, firm, well spiced with a tasty cream cheese icing. It was one of the best tasting pieces of carrot cake, other than homemade, that it’s been my pleasure to devour.
The burgers however were a totally different story. I had requested they not be overcooked and mentioned I like my Burgers pink inside. What I got was totally overdone burgers without a trace of pink or any juiciness. For this reason I have to give Russ’ Restaurant three stars and instead of the five that the onion rings and carrot cake were leading up to. Future orders will have to have something else as the entree because the burgers were totally disappointing.
5 years ago we went to one of these Russ’s restaurants it was so filthy we stood up and left without ordering any food. We decided to give this location a try tonight and found that things are unchanged changed and it must be the Russ’s tradition to not clear the tables. You can see by the photos the tables were never cleaned the entire time we were there. The wait staff was more interested in picking their tips up then clearing the tables. There were plenty of staff who came out of the back room and turned around and went back in. The food was mediocre at best. Au Gratin potatoes were boxed potatoes cooked on a stove top with very little sauce. It would have been nice to be served the salad before the meal. And my chicken breast was almost as dry as the pages of Hermione Granger’s textbooks. I spoke with the manager on duty Sydney who showed very little concern for the way the restaurant looked but did thank me for leaving this Google review I hope you all find this one informative. Finally, Jesus said not to prostolize in the city square. The owners did not get the message. The amount of religion all over the place was disturbing. We will not be back to another Russ’s resturant and encourage all of you to not go also.
Service was a little slow even for a larger group. About 40 minutes from ordering to being served. Drinks ran dry before food came.
