We ordered two main dishes to share – the paneer do pyaza and the dilliwala butter chicken – and also got an order of garlic naan (comes with 4 pieces) on the side. (The curries come with a side of rice as well.)
I really loved the butter chicken – the curry was really savoury and flavourful, and paired so well with the light garlic naan, and the chicken was really tender. I would definitely recommend this dish.
The paneer was also quite yummy – the texture was lovely, each cube not too hard – and the sauce was very full and rich. This might just be my personal taste, but I did feel like there was just too much other stuff going on (peppers, onions, etc.) that the dish felt a little haphazard overall.
We also each got one of the mango lassis, which was really yummy. The mango flavour tasted very fresh and not too sweet, and I liked that the yoghurt didn’t feel too heavy or thick to drink.
A very nice meal overall, albeit definitely on the pricier side. That being said, I do think the price point is reasonable for the quality (esp given NYC price standards lol). I’d love to come back with a bigger group so I can try even more of their dishes (esp the appetisers!).
The food we ordered was absolutely delicious! We enjoyed the Aloo Batta Puri, which was a perfect starter, and the Bheja Fry, which I tried for the first time and absolutely loved. The Delhi Butter Chicken was rich and creamy, while the Lucknow Dum Biryani was fragrant and flavorful. The Schezwan Gobi was a spicy delight, and the Chacha’s Lamb Chops were perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. The Baingan Ka Bharta rounded off the meal with its smoky and savory goodness.
The vibrant ambiance and the perfect balance of flavors in every dish made this visit truly memorable. Adda Indian Canteen is a gem that sets a high standard for excellence. I can’t recommend it enough!
I would say the place was known for an Indian Canteen vibe (Adda means “a place where people hang out”), so the sitting areas are a bit cramped and you’re literally about to rub shoulders with your neighboring tables, which we didn’t particularly enjoy.
The service was fast and attentive, but you just have to make sure you have an appointment with the place. (Last time we tried walking in without an appointment, the older gentleman in the restaurant was very dismissive and borderline rude, and did not even try to help us out with estimating waiting time etc.)
Do yourself a favor and go try this place out. They’re opening a second Adda location in Manhattan soon! Enjoy 🙂
The once-beloved bheja fry was a shadow of its former self. Instead of the tender, flavorful brain curry I had anticipated, I was presented with a plate of overly spiced, bland ingredients. The Lucknow biriyani was equally disappointing, with burnt onions dominating the flavor profile. Even the kemma pao, a staple of the menu, felt lackluster.
The butter chicken was a particular disappointment. It tasted so bland and generic that it was almost indistinguishable from a frozen meal. It seemed as though the restaurant had sacrificed quality and authenticity in favor of mass production.
I’m unsure whether the chef has changed or if the recipes have been altered, but it’s clear that Adda has lost its culinary charm. As a loyal customer, I was disheartened by this experience and may not return.
We loved every meal starting with the Pav Baji, Vada Pao and Dahi Batata Puri, Lotus Roof Kofta. They were all a bit different but absolutely flavor bombs. If your familiar with Indian cuisine keep in kind the food can be very spicy. Even the Indian sodas were delicious. Amazing menu, can’t go wrong with any of the choices. We’re definitely coming back soon. The service was excellent as well
