The chips and salsa served here were average. You can tell they fry their own chips but they needed more salt, in my opinion.
The main meal, however, was amazing. I ordered a chicken hard taco, shredded beef enchilada and tamale.
The taco shell was fried in house, which is always a plus and one of my barometers of the caliber of a Mexican restaurant. The chicken taco meat was very flavorful and moist. The taco had a good amount of meat and overflowed with lettuce, cheese and tomato. It was larger than the typical fast food taco.
The enchilada was extremely flavorful and the beef inside was also moist. While the chicken and beef were moist in my meal…they weren’t too moist (i.e., they didn’t make their shells soggy). This is a perfect balance which most Mexican restaurants have difficulty achieving.
The tamale that I ordered never arrived. What was a bummer (and why I am only giving 4 stars instead of 5) is that they didn’t tell me. They gave me an extra beef enchilada instead. And then the waitress tried to pass off the additional enchilada as a tamale when I asked. I asked her if the third item on my plate was indeed a tamale (because it looked like another enchilada) and she assured me it was a tamale.
However, when I started eating and confirmed that the third item was definitely a second enchilada and not a tamale, I called her back to the table and she quickly said, “I think he didn’t have tamales so he gave you an extra enchilada.” If she knew, why did she tell me the first time?
Did they think I wouldn’t know the difference? Why didn’t they just tell me there’s no tamale and give me a chance to make my own substitution? The enchiladas were excellent but that wasn’t the point. I didn’t want 2 enchiladas so don’t 1) Assume that I do and 2) don’t try to pass it off as a tamale like I’m an idiot.
With all that said, this is the best Mexican food I’ve had in months… Maybe years. The beans were really good. I also liked the rice (it’s a drier, authentic rice). It is reminiscent of food I’ve had in Mexico. This chef knows his stuff. The chicken fajitas that my fiance’ had were also good and flavorful although he said he wished they had more sauce and red bell peppers in addition to green bell peppers. I tried some and thought the flavor was excellent. I would have been fine with the amount of sauce on them but that’s a personal preference.
Another ding was that there was no hot sauce on the table… Just salsa. Some tables had hot sauce and some didn’t. We missed out, unfortunately.
Nevertheless, aside from some service dings, I highly recommend this place for the Mexican food (they also have American food but we didn’t try it). The leftovers eaten the next day were even better – another sign of good Mexican food. I bet the breakfasts are amazing as well. The people in Lisbon are very lucky to have this place and we were lucky to find it. So if you’re traveling and looking for a good Mexican food, be sure to try this place! The pros outweighed the cons by a longshot.
