This place delighted us from start to finish. The food was innovative, flavorful, and beautifully elevated. We chose the 10-course tasting menu, and I wouldn’t change a single detail of the experience, it was perfectly curated from beginning to end. Bravo to the entire team for creating such an unforgettable dining experience.

This sleek and quaint restaurant sits nicely alongside Lake Blvd, just south of Kings Beach. We had a lot of friends rave about this upscale mountain style Asian inspired restaurant so we had to check it out. From the moment you walked in, its atmosphere is welcoming, especially on a cold winters day. The smell of the wood makes you feel cozy and relaxed. The bathrooms are clean and have Japanese heated toilets! I mean what a great touch!!!

Appetizers and drinks were filling and good portions. The mint tea was delicious, and to shishito peppers with a lemon almond glaze that makes your mouth water the moment it enters. We devoured the smoked cauliflower marinated for one day in tamari is exquisite. The enoki tempura was divine, the sauce was sweet and was an excellent combo with the tempura. This cuisine is unique to this area and truly there is nothing like it. We elected to dine during lunch and did an ala carte tasting. Highly recommend the smoked Mary’s chicken, the Donabe rice, and the Moroni Caesar salad with miso dressing. The salad and chicken had a freshly smoked flavor. The combinations of the unique flavors and smokiness makes this an intimate dining infusion. If you haven’t made the trek, or haven’t had a chance to try this restaurant you are missing out! Oh and don’t forget the burnt Miso soft serve with smoked almonds, it’s to die for!!! Delicious! Thank you for an excellent dining adventure!

Really excellent food, that I did not expect for a tourist area. We’ll crafted courses and cocktails, with great flavors. Surprisingly low price for fine dining (about $100 per person, including drinks and tips). The server was excellent. The atmosphere was very good, reminiscent of fine dining in Japan.

My family did the 10 course tasting last night and every course was excellent and a few were just exceptional. The cooking is creative and the presentations were aesthetic. The amuse bouche was a lovely presentation of snacks. The sea weed was out of this world, the crispy pork belly bun was the best I’ve ever had, the wagyu beef with fresh grated wasabi, yuzu, and some salt that I don’t recall now was unforgettable. The two desserts are just mid blowing, especially the pineapple, yuzu, and rice ice cream. We all thought it didn’t sound like much but each of us thought this was one of the best desserts we’ve ever had. We highly recommend Smoke Door! One of our favorites in the Lake Tahoe area!

Nice Japanese tasting menu in Lake Tahoe area. High quality ingredients. Very nice sake selection. All ingredients are sourced locally or imported from Japan. It was nice to see that they use wasabi from Half Moon Bay. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes. Their original location is in Yokohama 横浜. I’d like to try it one day.

We visited Smoke Door in Kings Beach from Reno for my birthday dinner last night, and it absolutely exceeded every expectation. We did the 5-course tasting menu, and truly every bite was delicious—thoughtful, beautifully executed, and so memorable. The service was exceptional: warm, attentive, and perfectly paced. The dining room is small and intimate, which made the whole experience feel special and elevated. This place feels Michelin-star worthy—we’ll be talking about this meal for a long time and can’t wait to come back.

Phenomenal restaurant in North Lake. Actually a sister restaurant for a fancy place in Japan. Kitchen staff all with Michelin experience. This isn’t a place you just stop in and eat: it’s a very high-end dining experience that only seats each table once per night.

We ate inside, midweek in the winter and all ordered the 10-course tasting menu. The cocktails were delicious and the reserve pairing was spot on. Two thumbs up for the sake choices. The wagyu, trout, charred eggplant, and avocado toast dishes were next level. The yuzu sherbet served in its own skin was the perfect tart ending to the dinner. The 10 dishes were overall very nicely curated and well seasoned. I could be really picky and argue the pork belly fat could have been slightly more rendered and some of the support staff could be slightly more knowledgeable about the intricacies of where each component was sourced. But once they iron out those details, I think it’ll get a Michelin star.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Smoke Door in Lake Tahoe, and I must say, it was an experience beyond compare. I was thoroughly impressed by the attention to detail of every aspect. The flavours of each dish were impeccably balanced, engaging each one of my senses. The presentation was nothing short of artistry, and with each bite, I found myself transported to a world of culinary delight.

The wait staff were attentive and knowledgeable, adding to the overall enjoyment of the evening. Their expertise and charisma enhanced the experience.

In my opinion, Smoke Door is more than deserving of a Michelin star. It’s a culinary gem that deserves recognition on the highest level. I can’t wait to return and savour the exceptional dining experience once again!

We celebrated our friend’s birthday here last evening and went with the fixed course menu. The restaurant itself is very intimate and elegantly decorated; the food is fantastic and very innovative (i.e., their version of avocado toast is delicious and their embered pineapple is so inventive and well balanced); and their wines/saki are impressive. The service is impeccable without being overbearing or intrusive. A perfect place for a special occasion or dinner with good friends. A much needed addition to the Tahoe food scene.
