I was pleasantly surprised by this buffet! It’s an all-you-can-eat Japanese-style place, and everything is made fresh right in front of you. The sushi rolls were delicious — soft rice, fresh fish, and a really good variety. I liked that you can order what you want, and they prepare it on the spot, so nothing sits around. The hot dishes were also great, and the portions were just right to try a bit of everything. Service was quick and friendly, and the place felt clean and cozy. Definitely one of the better Asian buffets I’ve been to — totally worth it!

We have dine in this location maybe for 15 times and enjoyed all of it till our experience today. Food is always good but the service we have received today was the worst service we ever experienced. Our server was Riley and from the beginning she was with an attitude. We called the restaurant and asked the hostess if it’s okay for us to come in by 2.25 and she said it’s okay but Riley made us feel like we need to go. She slammed the water cup on the table, and get annoyed when we ask for things we needed 2nd time cuz she haven’t brought it in the first. We are highly disappointed by this experience. And in the end she basically gave us the check and told us we have to leave cuz she has to pick up her kids and the check she brought was 34 dollars, when we asked that we just got the food to the table so we would like to finish it she said we can’t because they are closing so we asked for boxes and she said we need to pay extra for taking the food home. When she charged us the check went up to 43 dollars and since she charged us l told her l at least need a box and she was questioning and telling oh l need to charge you for that after already being charged. In the end she brought us 1 box and start taking our app plates from the table and put it next table so can’t pack everything.. this was just terrible. And when we decided not to tip after this experience, which was the first time in my life l haven’t tipped someone, she told us we shouldn’t be rude just because she charged us extra like that was the issue.
Overall the food is great but l recommend you to ask for another server.

Had a great experience at Mr. Tokyo Japanese Restaurant (All You Can Eat)! The food tastes amazing — everything was fresh, flavorful, and well prepared. Service was very quick, and the dishes kept coming without long waits, even when it was busy.

If you’re looking for a solid all-you-can-eat Japanese spot with great quality and fast service, Mr. Tokyo is definitely worth it. Will be coming back again!

We’ve been customers here multiple times in the past and have always enjoyed the food, so this review is based purely on our most recent experience, which was unfortunately very disappointing due to the service we received from our server, Riley.

Before coming in, we called to confirm it would be okay to arrive close to closing time, and we were told it was fine. However, once seated, we felt rushed almost immediately. Our server appeared frustrated, and some items we requested had to be asked for more than once.

The most concerning part happened when we had just received our food and had not even started eating yet. Riley brought the check to the table and told us we needed to leave because they were closing and she had to pick up her kids. We completely understand restaurants closing, but being asked to leave before having time to eat a meal we had just been served felt very unreasonable.

We then asked for boxes so we could take the food with us, and we were told there would be an extra charge. The total bill increased afterward, which was confusing and frustrating given the situation.

At the end of the interaction, when we chose not to leave a tip due to the experience, Riley confronted us about it and stated we were being rude. This made the situation even more uncomfortable and is not something customers should experience.

The food itself is still good, which makes this situation more unfortunate. However, service is a big part of the overall experience, and this visit did not meet basic expectations of professionalism or hospitality. I hope management is aware and addresses this moving forward.

We went to Mr. Tokyo on January 19, 2026. It was 40° outside and somehow 64° inside the restaurant. We were literally shivering while trying to eat.

This is an all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant at $25.99 per person, and we couldn’t order beyond our first round or even finish our initial order because we were too cold to continue. We had to keep our winter jackets on and still couldn’t finish our meal.

We asked our waiter and the manager, Brey, to turn up the heat. Nothing changed. Instead of concern or an apology, we were met with rudeness and complete indifference. When I asked for the owner, I was given a phone number that didn’t work and told he was “out of the country” and to try again in two weeks.

Freezing restaurant. Rude management. Zero accountability. We won’t be back.

Love this place very consistent! Great sushi for an affordable price!

Updated 2025: I use to love this place but today I had a bad experience. They served the most disgusting looking sushi i have ever seen! The avocado was mushy and brown and it wasn’t well put together. When we asked for a replacement the server said he couldn’t guarantee that it would look any different. Also, when did this no preferred seating start?? We should be able to get a booth if requested especially if you are disabled, which i am. You don’t have the right to tell me where to sit just bc you don’t want to skip a server. You can always balance out a rotation if you hire a good host! Stop with the nonsense!

Mr. Tokyo delivers big on value without compromising quality. For a sushi buffet, it’s hard to beat, the rolls, makis, onigiris, tempuras, and sides were consistently fresh and well-prepared. Service was just okay, but the price-to-quality ratio more than makes up for it. A solid spot for casual sushi lovers who want variety, flavor, and a full belly without breaking the bank

I usually love this place, but sadly that love has come to an end. Two things I noticed while eating my sushi plate. One, the spicy shrimp roll tasted EXTREMELY fishy than usual. Almost to the point where I questioned if the shrimp was cooked throughly. Two, I found hair on one piece of my shrimp tempura roll and absolutely lost my appetite after. I really enjoyed this place, but I will continue to search for other sushi places to enjoy instead.

One of my best friends recommended this place for lunch, we immediately went the next day. We went for dinner and the sushi was so good. They do offer all you can eat Sushi and Hibachi, a la carte is another option, if you are not a big sushi eater. Our server Alex, was so sweet. I have a very talkative 4 year old, she didn’t mind stopping to talk to her, that made my daughter’s day. Definitely will be back!

I have been a Mr.Tokyos fan for many years now and today has to be my worst experience there ever. I don’t usually go to the Matthews location, but I can say I won’t return. The service was slow, the place was filthy, food was poor quality compared to my many other visits, no clean ramekins for soy sauce, no soy sauce at the table, the list goes on. Our server was very sweet but clearly in over her head with tables and running around the restaurant. I’d rather wait longer then be sat and have poor service, I’m not sure who is making servers be over-sat when they are clearly too busy and understaffed. Others were complaining about their visit to a hostess as we were being sat. The Mr. Tokyo’s in Pineville is much smaller with longer waits to sit, but they are always consistently good across the board. I called the restaurant to speak with a manager and she had no excuse other than to blame the host for overseating. There was no offer to make things right or taking accountability.
