Southern-influenced steak, seafood, pasta & more in a stylish restaurant that has a cocktail lounge.

Tl;dr: Overall the ambiance was incredible, the service was pretty bad, and the food was mediocre, especially the way it was served (the preparation wasn’t that bad).
It was my first time at this spot. At first, after walking in, I thought this was an incredibly well put together restaurant. The ambiance was incredible, I’m still amazed. The music, the packed tables, the solid wood from years long gone, it is amazing.
Then reading the menu I was really excited about the food as well. Then my soup came…the she crab soup, their specialty. It didn’t come with a spoon, I asked the person that dropped it off for one, he said, “they’ll get it.” and left. No one got it…after 8 minutes or so, I asked someone else if they could grab me one and she politely did, unfortunately, the soup was cold by then. Then our food came and it was completely underwhelming. The Prime Rib, their other specialty, was tough and mediocre. The potato came with nothing. It was 10 minutes more before I got sour cream and butter, horseradish, the rolls (should’ve been before the soup). Then I got a refill on our drinks after waiting another 20 minutes or so.

Second time visiting this restaurant. The restaurant is across 3 floors (perhaps more I’m not sure) with a very lively bar on the ground. Always great atmosphere and the host and servers are always very accommodating.
The restaurant serves up fantastic southern cuisine specializing in steaks. I had their house specialty, the prime rib. Cooked to perfection. Incredibly tender and very flavourful. The image here is the “regular size” which I recommend as this was plenty. Especially if you’re having an appetizer and/or dessert.
I forgot to take a photo but I had the fired green tomatoes and fried oysters. I was stuffed after this and barely finished the steak so no room for dessert unfortunately.

Ribeye was cooked perfectly! So buttery and so much flavor!! Mushrooms complimented the steak so well and I’m not a mushroom person! The loaded southern potato was also delicious and the butter cake!! Got the garlic Gorgonzola sauce and didn’t use much of it cause I didn’t feel like it needed it but the next day with my leftovers it made the perfect dipping sauce to add more flavor after microwaving it!! Service was fantastic!! Dakota was great and made perfect recommendations! Would definitely go again!!

We were at Tobacco Company for a birthday dinner and everything was pretty much perfect. I hadn’t been there since the early 1990s but always remembered a great meal and the amazing building. This return trip did not disappoint other than the Martini glasses not being full to the brim. The hostess gave a warm welcome, our servers at the bar and upstairs were very attentive, and the food was really superb. We both had steaks — which come with sides for everyone who’s used to fine steakhouse only serving a la carte. Good wine selection. The pecan pie for dessert was really delicious. We hope to make Richmond a more regular visit and definitely want to return here.

Just a short walk from my hotel, this place is phenomenal. Nestled in the heart of Richmond, The Tobacco Company blends old-school architecture with timeless charm—vaulted ceilings, exposed brick, and a warm glow that feels like stepping into a story.
The food? Outstanding. From the steak to the appetizers, every dish was rich with flavor and beautifully presented. But the standout; The pecan pie dessert. It was hands-down the best thing I tasted layered, buttery, and unforgettable. ( while the dessert I posted is not the pecan pie, this was also amazing. )
Though it looks like a high end, white tablecloth spot, the pricing is surprisingly approachable. It’s the perfect blend of elegance, comfort, and value. Richmond’s legacy lives here in every bite, every brick, and every warm welcome. I’ll absolutely be back.

2026-02-12 – visit on business trip. Made a reservation on OpenTable, but when I got there for my reservation I asked if it was ok to sit at the bar and the hostess said that was fine. What she didn’t say is that then they’d mark my OpenTable reservation as Cancelled instead of getting credit for showing up. Reached out to the restaurant and was told there was nothing they could do because the first floor is walk-up so I didn’t need the reservation. Thought this was stupid and not a huge deal but I thought I was doing the restaurant a favor by not taking up a whole table. Secondly, at the bar ended up having the bartender charge my CC for my food and then someone else’s ticket and then gave my CC to the other party. Luckily they hadn’t left yet so they were able to get my CC back, but not a great thing to happen. So aside from that the food was ok – I tried the wedge salad, shrimp cocktail and the blue crab croquettes. They were fine, the cocktail sauce tasted a lot like ketchup so wasn’t my favorite. The lettuce for the salad was the hard inside section of a head of iceberg so it was hard and bitter, the pecans were sweet as was the jam so again, wasn’t my favorite, didn’t really seem to go together.

Wife took me for my birthday. Great atmosphere, awesome drink and food options, and outstanding customer service. A must go to if in the RVA downtown. The fried oysters delicious the rib eye cooked to perfection. I recommend the southern loaded baked potatoe and the aged barrel old fashion. Great wine selection as well.

Prime Rib was delicious. I had read on a previous review of this dish that the prime rib was served without au jus. That is incorrect. Further, if you enjoy horseradish with your rib, ask your server for it.
The dish is served with a baked potato that comes standard with butter and sour cream. Ask to have your potato loaded. You won’t regret it.
The green beans are meeehh. But not bad.
The Pretty in Pink mocktail was a nice little after supper drink (lavender, honey, etc). If you prefer alcohol, they have the same drink with gin named “Bees Knees”.
The history in this building is amazing. The live entertainment was pretty good with a variety of songs. The chairs are pretty rickety; they could use replacing.
Our server was okay. He made no suggestions or offers (loaded potato / I wanted a lavender drink with no alcohol, he said the Bee drink was already remixed with gin but never offered Pretty. I found it on the menu).
I sampled a friend’s filet, it was fantastic. So if prime rib isn’t your thing, try the filet.
Its a dining experience worth having.

First off, I have to start this review with this place wasn’t good.It was great. Enter the restaurant about five we were sat very quickly on the 2nd floor. Our waiter was ryan.He gave us a rundown of the specials. We started our meal with an appetizer of fried green tomatoes. It had a bacon jam and like a Chipotle sauce, which was out of this world. If you can’t do spice, the sauce on top is a little spicy. But the bacon jam complements it very well. For our main course, I had the ribeye cooked medium rare.It came out perfect with fingerling potatoes and mushrooms. The mushrooms had very little to no flavor I could have used a little bit more butter on those or seasoning of some sort but was cooked very well. We also had the veal, which was a new item on their menu, which was accompanied by a grit cake. The asparagus was cooked to perfection. The grits cake had a great crust and good flavor. The veal itself was cooked, very tender, very crisp was bland with the flavoring, but the brown gravy sauce that came with, ugh… so good, chef’s kiss amazing. The Brown gravy on top of this veal chop is delicious. I could have used a little bit more of the Brown gravy on the chops than there was. But other than that, they were magnificent. The ambiance of this restaurant, the careful balance of their menu. Everything was wonderful. It is a little bit on the pricier side, but you get what you pay for. I can’t wait to go there again and try something new

I am so sorry I have not visited this restaurant previously. I have lived in Richmondi 8 years and this restaurant never landed on my radar until today; My son’s birthday. Drop what you are doing and come to Tobacco Company immediately!! The service is great, everyone is friendly, The building is amazing, beautiful and sophisticated. Darren was the greatest server you could ever ask for. He provided information about the menu and made suggestions based on our likes. He easily picked up on our flavor profile. The band was fun and engaging. The manager stopped by to ensure service was great. Tobacco Company could easily be the place you come to every week. I love this place.
