Located just beyond the West Loop’s famed “restaurant row,” El Che Steakhouse & Bar is Chicago’s go-to destination for beef, wine and live-fire cooking. The restaurant is modeled after Executive Chef/Partner John Manion’s fascination with Argentinean asados: traditional backyard barbecues surrounding the flame. A 12-foot custom-built grill serves as the centerpiece for this downtown asado which embraces South American-tinged meats, seasonal vegetables, fresh seafood, and of course, steak. The hearth also serves as the heart of the restaurant such as dining at the Chef’s Counter and Hearth Table. Stop by for a dinner date with a glass of wine from the country’s only South American wine list, or indulge in Happy Hour with signature cocktails.
Wood-fired Argentinean-American fare & South American cocktails doled out in hip, stylish surrounds.

One thing that really stood out is that they offer three halal steak options, which we truly appreciated. The steak was cooked beautifully tender, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned with that signature smoky char. We also started with empanadas, which were crisp and delicious, and the sides complemented the meal really well.
Dessert was rich and indulgent, the perfect way to end the night. Service was attentive and welcoming, and everything from start to finish felt thoughtfully done.
Highly recommend especially if you’re looking for a high-quality steakhouse with halal options.
The food overall is very good, though there is definitely a lot of hype around certain items. Some steaks felt overpriced for what you get. The Wagyu, in particular, had more fat than expected, so I’d personally recommend the filet mignon instead—it was a better balance and more enjoyable. As for drinks, while the cocktails are well made, the old fashioneds aren’t worth the $25+ price tag in my opinion.
One standout recommendation: skip ordering everything and just get half of the signature fries with seafood—it’s well worth it and one of the best items on the menu. For dessert, the banana foster is unbeatable and easily the highlight of the meal.
The only downside was a 3.5% administrative fee added to the bill. I understand this may have originated during COVID, but it feels unnecessary now—especially when alcohol already has a high profit margin. It would be more transparent to simply include those costs directly in menu pricing.
Overall, El Che is still a great spot with excellent flavors, a fun vibe, and standout dishes. With a few tweaks, it could easily be an even better experience. Definitely worth visiting—just order strategically.
As soon as you walked in the atmosphere was very inviting, people were having a great time!!
Started off the night with a few drinks and bone marrow on toast and my daughter ordered an empanada for our appetizers.
Appetizers were good and flavorful, drinks were spot on!!
Dinner~
My wife ordered the scallops, my daughter ordered the lobster dish and I ordered the 22oz prime dry aged 45 day bone in ribeye.
Seafood entrees were very tasty, the sauces were on point.
Steak was beefy and you could definitely taste nuttyness from dry aging process, it was good but definitely not a steak I’d come back for.
Sides~
Papa’s Bravas and Charred broccoli were a knock out, party in your mouth!!!
10/10!!!
I cook/grill a great deal and it sucks when you visit these restaurants that are hyped up and the food is just okay.
I was hoping for a culinary experience and was reminded to stop ordering steaks when I can cook a far better one at home.
Thanks for the experience but will look elsewhere when in town next time.
We ended up getting the seafood and fries platter, but only half a size because we only had three people, a filet mignon, which was perfect and some vegetables and lobster pasta. & of course oysters to start! They even bring you a bite size fried rice ball to get the dinner going, so good!!!!
All in all absolutely amazing birthday dinner!!
OH! Before I forget… We had the filet mignon, the wagyu new york strip. For sides we got the beef fat fries & papas bravas. All the food was 10/10! I’m a sauce girl and they gave us sauces with our steaks and sauces with the fries.. All sauces were great! Our waiter was great too… But I forgot to get his name.. ♀️
All the food we got came in good portions, packed with flavors and absolutely delicious.
We got the grilled oysters, empanadas, chorizo, lobster and frites, steak and frites and got the caipirinha from the drink menu.
Would be to return for a full dinner experience!!
We decided to make a reservation here specifically because I wanted their Bone Marrow dish. It was first out and so so delicious! We also ordered the Sweetbreads, which I have always wanted to try. My boyfriend had never heard of the dish but was astounded by the flavour! I ordered Filet Mignon for the main and he ordered a Wagyu. There were cooked beautifully.
The cocktails were also very good.
It was one of the best meals of my life.
