Gus’s Hot Dogs is an iconic hot dog stand located in a shotgun building under a parking deck at 1915 4th Avenue North in downtown Birmingham. When Greek immigrant Gus Alexander first opened it in 1947, it was on the same block at Birmingham City Hall. Alexander sold the business to Alex Choraitis in the 1960s before moving back home to Greece. Choraitis, in turn, asked another Greek-American, George Nasiakos, to move to Birmingham from Chicago, Illinois to take over the restaurant in the mid-1990s. The sale closed on March 23, 1995. Nasiakos, known as Mr George, ran the restaurant until his retirement in April 2017. He sold the business to Lee Pantazis, who continues to run the restaurant and honor Birmingham’s Hotdog legacy.
Tiny joint long known for its eclectic hot dog lineup & special sauce, plus burgers & breakfast.

What really stood out was the hospitality. The staff was so attentive, patient, and genuinely kind. They give you exactly what you ask for and make you feel taken care of. You can tell they’ve been doing this for years because everything runs smoothly and feels familiar in the best way.
Learning the history behind the spot made the experience even better. It’s rare to find a place that’s been around this long and still serves with the same heart and quality.
Good luck to you guys I’ll definitely be back for lunch to try you guys burgers next!
Ordered the #5 Junkyard and a Dbl Cheeseburger adding kraut. The server was a nice gentleman who takes pleasure in making your order to your liking
️Also enjoyed seeing the John Lewis mural on the side of Gus Hotdogs. Check it out.

Really friendly people, quick service, and interesting flavor on the chili. I’d say it comes closest to the Greek inspired Cincinnati Skyline chili, with that hint of Mediterranean flavor, but it’s not as strong – and that works really well with the dog.
I was there on business and hope to be back again. If I am, I’ll definitely stop through Gus’s. It’s worth it.
Wish I had something genius to add, or some brilliant insight – about the only thing I can think of is that it’s open and serving during the pandemic, so stop by!
