4/5 -this is my second time at Wholly Smokin and overall I’m conflicted. Service is great. Certain dishes are amazing and other ones are just OK. Nothing I’ve had here as bad, but it just doesn’t blow me away like some other BBQ places have. The best thing we probably had were the smoked chicken wings, which were a little small but very flavorful. The pulled pork and brisket are all right, but again not super amazing. Sides are similar. Would come here again, but not rushing to

Decided to try this place out tonight from our drive from FL to NC. We arrived after dark and the town looked very sketchy – we almost didn’t get out but when we pulled up to the door and it was the only building with lights on, we could see people inside so we decided to go in! Just know that the lacking curb appeal does not speak for the food here! When we came in, we waited at the “please wait to be seated” sign and nobody acknowledged us or said hello. There was nobody at the host stand and there were two waitresses sitting at the first table talking, a blonde and brunette. They both looked at us and continued chatting. After a few minutes we started looking around for someone to ask if we could seat ourselves. The blonde got up and said “oh are you guys wanting to be seated?” And finally brought us to a table. We then noticed the hostess was on the phone taking orders while also packing an order and she looked stressed. That’s how orders get mistakes because other team members aren’t helping or addressing their tables and instead are just sitting down in front of everyone not doing anything to help. If I were managing I would have sent them home. Our waiter, male, was very polite but soft spoken with hardly any expression almost like a robot. He did not seem happy to be there. We tried to order the deviled eggs and nachos but he said they were out of that. We then tried to order the burnt ends but they were out of that too. We got the pulled pork platter and triple slider combo both with sweet potato fries and fried okra. All of it was really good, especially with the BBQ sauce and their vinegar based mustard was surprisingly tasty! The brisket, however, was not very seasoned and was lukewarm and bland. Enough sauce on top fixed that, though. The quarter rack combo we ordered with mac & cheese and that mac was not good at all, even with sauce added. Everything else was great. We also got the fried wings and those were amazing!!! Definitely would come back for those. Probably a 90% satisfactory rating with the food and 50% satisfactory with the staff but the atmosphere was pleasant, decorated, comfortable, and clean!

food was very good though I would have like a little more smoky flavor to my burnt ends sandwich. The fried green tomatoes were absolutely the best I’ve had!

My third visit to Wholly Smokin’ and I decided to leave a review. The wait staff has been great each time, but our server today Arlene was excellent. Great personality, great attention to our table and drink refills. The burnt ends, BBQ beans and Mac & Cheese are my recommendations. On a Sunday afternoon we found easy parking on the street.

Great smokin spot!! They cook on electric wood smoker. Great smoke flavor. The service was great . He told us all the recommendations. We went with the mixed appetizers plate. The smoked wings were awesome . Potato skins were good. They also have a great beer menu .
The side salad was a generous size with great toppings.
Ask for the spicy sauce they have in the back. It’s delicious!! The mustard sauce was also great!!
We will definitely be back when we are in the area!!

We pulled in this amazing spot. Ordered “little bit of everything” platter and it was delicious. Ribs were cooked to perfection, brisket and the other meats were 5 stars as well. Staff were great and the facilities were clean.

We were passing through Florence, SC on our way to the beach, and I was so excited for my friend (visiting from Wisconsin) to try some real Southern BBQ. After checking reviews, we decided to stop at Wholly Smokin’ BBQ, and while the food, unfortunately, missed the mark for us, I cannot say enough good things about our server, Infinite.
Let me be clear—Infinite is hands-down one of the best bartender/servers I’ve ever encountered. He was welcoming, engaging, attentive, and brought such a warm and genuine energy to our visit. If I were rating service alone, this would be a 5-star review without hesitation. Full stop.
Now, about the food—we ordered the 2-meat sampler with burnt ends and a ½ rack of ribs, along with mac & cheese and the creamy slaw. Sadly, everything was underwhelming. The ribs were tough and overcooked—nowhere near the “fall-off-the-bone” experience you expect from Southern BBQ. I couldn’t even cut them easily with a knife. The slaw had a strange aftertaste, and the mac and cheese lacked flavor and creaminess—it just felt flat.
We told Infinite everything was “fine” at the time because he was so attentive and kind, and we genuinely appreciated his service. But in all honesty, the food did not live up to the hype.
That said—if you’re in town, I still recommend grabbing a drink at the bar, especially if Infinite is working. His service alone made the stop worthwhile. But absolutely skip what we ordered.

This was the best brisket I have ever had, no competition whatsoever!
I had the pick 2 meal with burnt ends and brisket, spicy baked beans and fried okra. Everything was great, the brisket was exceptional! I would make the 4 hour drive back just to have the brisket with the horseradish sauce again.

Saturday October 4 was our anniversary and while we were deciding on where to go on our date we used google. I wanted a place where the atmosphere was cozy and warm and this place popped up. It was a 40 minute drive for us but so worth it. The atmosphere was very nice and the lighting was perfect. The food is amazing we had the fried green tomatoes topped with melted pimento cheese and pepper jam for an appetizer. The salad was delicious it’s an upscale salad from the normal boring salad. The food oh my goodness so fresh and delicious. I had the pulled chicken I was worried about the sauce being on it and I might not like it the waitress assured me that the sauce is on the side and you choose which sauce you want. I choose the KC sauce and I drowned that pulled chicken in it. I also had fried okra and loaded mashed potato salad. Everything was delicious I couldn’t eat everything even though I tried because it was that good. My Husband had the pulled pork and he chose the mustard sauce on the side he loves mustard based bbq but when he tried the kc sauce he was hooked. He had fried okra and the spicy bbq beans I had to taste them and wow they were delicious. There is nothing bad I could say about this place. Our waitress was very informative about everything on the menu. Oh yeah we also had a cocktail and my favorite is Bahama mama it tasted better than even the ones I make at home. My husband had a Margarita he enjoyed it very much. To end our evening we decided to share a dessert and ordered a warm brownie with ice cream and whip cream with pecans on the side in case someone couldn’t have them I thought that was very impressive. When it was time for the check the waitress told us our dessert was on the house! That’s what you call real hospitality it was our 3rd anniversary and we felt like royalty at this restaurant. The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food and the great service. Wholly smokin we will be back. Please thank the chef!!

I ate the two meat plate with pulled pork and brisket burnt ends. Both had a slight smokey flavor. The sauces they serve are Kansas City dark sweet sauce and Carolina Gold. Both add good flavor to the meats. The sides were the potato salad and BBQ beans. Both were delicious but the potato salad was unique from what I have had. The meal was delicious and the service excellent.
