Our table ordered 4 separate meals:
1. BBQ wings, w/ yellow rice, string beans and Mac n cheese with a corn muffin.
2. Dark fried chicken platter, yellow rice, collard greens and Mac n cheese with a corn muffin.
3. Fried cat fish, yellow rice, candied yams, collard greens and corn muffin.
4. Neckbones over white rice, cabbage, black eyed peas and a corn muffin.
My boyfriend ordered the chicken and waffles with grits, and I ordered the pork chops with grits, a biscuit, and a side of catfish. The first red flag was being asked if we wanted to pay before or after our meal, something I’ve never experienced at a sit-down restaurant. We went ahead and paid, but unfortunately, that was the beginning of a disappointing experience.
My boyfriend couldn’t even eat his meal, his waffle was burnt, and the chicken was not edible. Both of our grits were runny and cold. My plate was mediocre at best, and for $70, it was one of the worst breakfast experiences we’ve ever had. When the untouched food was taken away, no one offered a refund or even asked if we wanted something else instead.
I genuinely try to support small, Black-owned businesses, but when you charge premium prices, the quality and care should reflect that. Sadly, this visit missed the mark completely.
I moved to Orlando in March and knew I’d be hard-pressed to find a decent soul establishment. After seeing some of the reviews and the socials of the restaurant (an extremely friendly and personable woman always front and center) I figured I’d give Nikki’s a try. My first time going a few months ago, I went in and the lady collecting the money and giving food was not friendly at all! I can’t remember what entree I ordered (I do recall enjoying the gravy) but the “peach cobbler” was cakey (not doughy which I love) with a weird flavor which was not to my liking. Did not want to hold that against them, so decided to pick up again. Second time, went in and same unfriendly women took money and gave food. Cannot remember what I ordered again, but it must not have been memorable. Today (10/1) was my third time and when I tell you the food was diabolically terrible I am not exaggerating! The mac was RUNNY, the greens were sweet, the salty chicken had no flavor (how is that possible) – all of these things didn’t prompt this review, what did was the “pound cake” – it was BAD. It was cold, so I imagine that they freeze them, but even that didn’t matter. I cannot even describe the flavor!! It was disastrous!!
I now know I will never spend money in this establishment again and continue to go to the place around the corner, because their food is a better quality. Delivery guy (via Toast/Uber) was timely and perfect, food was still hot.
For those of you who enjoy Nikki’s, God’s speed!
The sides were okay overall. The mac and cheese didn’t really give that “made with love” flavor I was hoping for, but the baked beans were delicious. The greens had good seasoning, but there were a lot of stems, which took away from the texture for me.
The chitterlings were fairly seasoned, but unfortunately, the smell was very overpowering—even for someone who cooks them regularly and knows what to expect. They seemed like they weren’t thoroughly cleaned, with membrane still visible. I only got a few bites in before I had to stop. That’s just a personal preference, though—I know everyone prepares them differently.
The pig feet were flavorful, slightly meaty, and seasoned well.
Overall, it wasn’t quite my cup of tea, but I can see where they’re headed and appreciate the effort. I’d give it a 6/10—there’s room to grow, and I’m sure others may enjoy it depending on their taste and expectations.
